option or skull for armor damage?

So just thought of yet another pretty random thing that I could post here to see what waypointers think.

As to what it is, if the title didnt give it away yet lets get to it.

So what this is about is what would you think about an option/skull/similar to add armor damage that stacks each time you get damaged in gameplay?

How this could work is that it would weaken the armor each time you get, for example, shot after your shields go down and it would show as bullethole, plasma burn, brute claw marks etc depending on damage taken (you can see model when for example carrying a turret or driving, perhaps on cutscenes even). In first person the visor could also get cracks or scratches like at the end of Halo Reach but this time only when you get headshotted with relatively weak weapon that wouldnt have killed you.

As for how it would effect gameplay is that if you got shot with your shields down on some earlier battle you could take less shots with your shields down on the next one.

But maybe it could be a bit harsh to add on top of other skulls when someone attempts slaso so thats why it could be separate option.

Though it could be a bit much work for such little thing as this with graphical and gameplay changes. Maybe, but obviously this topic can be about different aspects of this discussed separately like adding the graphical changes but not the other aspects, or the visor cracks.

But this could be something for no hit marathon runs as practise with visual indicators.

So feel free to comment.

I thank that lasting damage to the armor when playing would be cool but as a visual only

So visual as in the visor cracks and the marks on the armor or just the armor damage? Because the cracks could be impairing to the sight.

But in any case it wouod be about option you can turn on and off. Just a matter if those aspects would be useful to you.

Just the armor for the reason you stated

It’s a pretty cool idea. Would definitely add a layer of immersion to the campaign or firefight. I was recently playing Metro Last Light for the first time and while walking through the radioactive world, there were a few things that would smack the visor of your character. It would smear on your screen and you could wipe it off with your hand. Things like that add an extra layer of immersion that I think would be cool in a Halo game.

So from a gameplay standpoint it would be like health that can never regenerate? I think it’s a cool idea that would allow players to play through missions in a different way. Like you said though, that skull should be separate from the rest since it would be a bit too crazy for LASO players to have permanent armor damage on top of all the other skulls. Although, if the enemies had it enabled too, then it could be a cool way to experience LASO.

It sounds like the Halo CE health system without health packs, which might be an option in custom games in Halo 5 (maybe? I forget), but with added visuals. So, would I like a skull version of it in the campaign? Hmm… I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t use it if it were. As long as there are enough people who would then 343i should include it. It’d be easy enough to implement, but it wouldn’t add to the entertainment value for me personally.

Well, basically it would be like an upgraded version of “blackeye” skull that would be used on nohit/lowhit runs given there is no way to replenish health possibly meaning only shields remain on the later levels which would mean possibly getting killed by a single shot after shields deplete.
So possibly as added feature character could start limping when shot on leg instead of dying immediately.
And this is definitely not for all, but this could be something little for the perfectionists since speedrunners already have such things as in-game timers and own achievements. and neither of those groups are the whole community.
And you mentioned at least the game mechanic side of this but what do you think of the visual side of it with having possibly something like the armor pieces damaged or removed when shot or hit on the current run and you could regain the full armor by disabling the option or starting the run from beginning?

And maybe damage could extent to armor only, character damage could be a bit out of place in Halo. Perhaps more of a DOOM thing.

It would be great to see damaged armor variants in infinite. Halo 5 started this with Mark VI scarred but it can be a lot better than that. As for gameplay it would be a pretty cool new skull for the campaign if it ever were a thing
