Opinions needed! Special FX or not?

For my latest map I’m wondering whether or not to use special effects, in particular Next Gen and Juicy together. I got two screenshots below, both from the same position on the map and looking at the same spot but one with special effects and the other without (links are safe; directly linked to the pictures in my album on PhotoBucket.com, so don’t worry).

Now I need your opinions, dear Waypointers. Do you like it better with or without these effects?

Screenshot 1: No effects.
Screenshot 2: Next Gen and Juicy together.

What I’m primarily interested in is not so much the pure looks but your opinions and/or experience about playing on maps with special effects in general and the Next Gen/Juicy combo in particular. I’d very much like to keep the effects, but if this turns out to be bad for gameplay, then I’ll remove them.

Thank you! =)

Honestly, the FX really makes the hardcoded cliffs look nice, but everything else looks oversaturated.

Yes, unfortunately. I wanted to make the map look a tad darker without becoming too dark. Next Gen does that but then everything becomes to grey-ish and the colours are too pale. Juicy fixes that but at the cost of all the colors being oversaturated now.

Next Gen + Juicy + Colorblind, maybe?

Heres the thing, i prefer color effects if they dont make the map look too dark, what i do is if i have a map that i like 2 seperate color schemes on i upload them both at or near the same time, 9 times out of 10 though the map without color coding gets the higher downloads, if one map doesnt see downloads after a certain time i remove it, i suggest you do that to give incentive to both types of players. Just a quick observation note, you will more then likely get more downloads on a plain color scheme.

I’ve added Colorblind to the mix as well, but there is only very little difference.

Screenshot 1: No effects.
Screenshot 2: Next Gen and Juicy together.
Screenshot 3: Next Gen, Juicy, and Colorblind.
The colors are only a very small bit less saturated, most noticable when looking at the grass and the yellow lights on the center structure.

Still, it might just be that little less bright and colorful that makes the difference. Honestly, I can’t tell. But you can! =)

Have you tried just Juicy with Colorblind? It’s a little easier on the eyes than Colorblind + Next Gen, if still a little dark.

pics 2 and 3 are about the same, i noticed no difference, me personally, id upload both versions 1 and 2, dont bother with 3 as there is almost no difference between 2 and 3

Personally, I like Juicy+Colorblind, but those look nice, too. They add a bit of character to some maps.

THe thing is that I want the map to be slightly dark-ish because it’s supposed to be underground. I completely enclosed the Quarry with coliseum walls for that. But since Forge objects don’t cast shadows, the map itself was still bright and sunlit.

I’m going to try all possible combinations of Next Gen, Colorblind, and Juicy once I’m done with today’s challenges and post screenshots of the results here.
