For the past 3 years Halo 5 has been marketed as a very different game. The backlash we have been seeing of the 80/20 Locke-Chief ratio is just one clear sign of it. From trailers like ‘All Hail’ and ‘The Cost’ to 343i outright lying its clear the game we got is not the game we were advertised.
I have been a long time Halo fan for years now, almost to the point of obsession and I am disappointed to say the least.
If you enjoy Halo 5 great, let no one stop you. However understand that people who may be upset or disappointed have just as legitimate feelings.
I absolutely agree with you however I still enjoyed the campaign. You are right though the advertising and the way the game has been detailed up to release is way different it’s a bit disappointing as I don’t think the advertising elements were really gone into so much in the campaign. I still enjoyed it though but there is some things that need answering and seem to be either forgotten or ignored.
Not even halfway through the campaign I just gave up and forced myself to finish it only because it’s Halo. The game was definitely nothing like they marketed, and the ending came out of nowhere, resolving nothing (as if there was anything to resolve, given how shallow the plot is) yet setting up a cliffhanger.
It kills me because I loved everything 343 achieved with Halo 4, yet it’s like this game was done by an entirely different company.
Completely agree. It was a bit amusing when the Halo 5 Launch Trailer ad started playing with the caption “Halo 5’s Adds Lied To You” present in the video player.
I thought it was gonna be an open world sandbox game, in which you play as a rogue Master Chief. Plus they really hyped the whole “Locke VS 117” thing for them
The marketing, minus the teaser, is all very symbolic and metaphorical. You’re taking a bunch of it too literally.
The main point of the Hunt The Truth ads was to spark up interest in the audio logs along with getting fans to discover true intentions within the game.
For example: Is Locke a bad guy who hates Chief? Is Chief going AWOL worth pretending he died (most likely a point in Hunt The Truth)?

Yeah it was a smokescreen, and thats not a good thing. I don’t care why they did it or if it has some canon reason for it at the end of the day It was misleading to consumers. People bought this game expecting something else. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if a particularly disgruntled fan tries to take legal action against 343i for false advertising. This is Destiny or Gone Home all over again.

Well mostly. The story in the campaign was an epic fail, but the multiplayer does save Halo 5 from being totally awful. They advertised the multiplayer right, but not the story. Basiclly, we got half of a game.
