OPINION: Comparing H4's shortcomings

Apparently, I have to clearly state this is an opinion, and I’m 100% serious.

Now, as much I love Halo 4, and how 343 is doing their best to make the game better, I see some rather big flaws. For now, I’ll just list off my biggest one in this thread: campaign.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the campaign and story, but I noticed a huge issue, which is that for any newcomers playing Halo 4 as their first Halo title (or any veterans of previous Halo titles), it is rather easy to become confused by the story, especially with characters.

I also say that Halo veterans will have issues because, if they haven’t read any of the books, they will have some difficulty understanding things such as why the Didact wants to destroy humanity, who the Librarian is and why she helps the Master Chief stop the Didact, what the composer is and does, etc. I know the Terminals touch on some of these subjects, but having to go to Waypoint is rather cumbersome, and the books go into SO, SO much more detail.

I feel that the story should have been much more accessible to newcomers and veterans who haven’t read any of the books, Greg Bear’s Halo: Cryptum and Primordium specifically. This is something that should be corrected in future titles.

I also believe that is the main problem with the campaign in this game.I hope they fix this problem in halo 5.

maybe it’s a flaw for people who want to see the story but this game has bigger issues which need to be addressed

I’m a halo veteran.

The only book I ever read was ‘The Fall of Reach’.

Halo 4 still made sense to me. I may not know the backstory, but I knew the objectives of the Didact and the Librarian from what was stated in the game.

Just because there is backstory, doesn’t excuse it from being omitted from the game, especially important details and plot points like why the Didact is so cliche or why you’re fighting the Covenant again.

Not only that, but just because something is explained, doesn’t mean that it’s good or the right path it should be taking.

I think in my OPINION (I can haz one yes?) the story wasn’t very well explained.

> I think in my OPINION (I can haz one yes?) the story wasn’t very well explained.

I thought it was HORRIBLY explained. Where did the Didact come from? Who the heck is The Librarian? Why are we fighting the Covenant again?

If 343 is trying to make a game that is more accessible to new players, then I really don’t understand why they’ve made the story so confusing to them. That will just drive them away from the game.

It’s also still quite confusing for Halo players who have little exposure to the books, and other forms of media.

I have to agree. While I personally loved the campaign to death, those who have never played past Halo games and/or read the books would be rather clueless regarding what’s going on. I’m very happy that they chose to expand the story by diving more into the Halo universe that’s found outside the games, they might have gotten a tad overconfident regarding their ability to make sure that everybody understands what’s happening.
