Opening - Would you have prefered player control?

Considering the opening cutscene to Halo 5: Guardians in which Fireteam Osiris run down the long snowy slope on Kamchatka while fighting the Covenant during an avalanche, would you have preferred to play that segment of the game yourself or are you happier watching it in a cutscene?

To be honest, I don’t think the opening would have had much of an impact to the audience had it been player controlled because it is a cutscene and we get to see things we wouldn’t be able to see from a gameplay perspective.

Doing that scene in-gameplay would’ve made it completely different. If you don’t have large panning shots of the battlefield showing you all that is happening, it is better to just scrap that stuff and do a more subdued opening. Either that or wrestle control from the player at key points to showoff your big set-piece moments at which point you might as well do a traditional cutscene. So yeah the intro cutscene is great for what it aims to achieve.

I thought that opening was a bit over the top and it really set my expectations low right off the bat. I would have rathered that cutscene just not be there. They could have started the game by either having it as a regular mission or just having a safer drop point.

Yeah. For me, starting the level the way they did made the level itself feel rather anti-climatic. That’s why I asked.

Personally I found it good that it was over the top. It really sets aside the differences between Fireteam Osiris and Blue Team. On the one hand we have a team of Spartans who are young, newly formed, and cocky; It’s like they want to show off whereas on the other hand we have a team of Spartan veterans who are more experienced and more tactical with their movements.

The opening scene was flawed imo. Over the top is a pretty good way to put it. A lot of the cutscenes were like that to me. Sure the graphics were good, but the writing & scene itself weren’t the greatest. Unless you read all the expanded lore & watch all the side story videos on Halo, the average Halo player has no idea whats going on in H5, at least I didn’t anyways. The Act Man does a great analysis of the Campaign on youtube, very eye opening & well put together.

I was just thinking wow this is gonna be -Yoink-. That being said, I’d rather just have a cutscene there instead of playing it.

The opening cutscene felt to extra imo made the level itself feel under whelming
