“Far in the future Locke would eventually become a Spartan-IV. His first assignment as a Spartan was to collect Dr. Halsey from the Covenant after intelligence told ONI that she had information about Forerunner attacks on Human colonies. After this mission Locke would be tasked with hunting down Master Chief. To help on this mission he tasked an Artificial Intelligence to look for weaknesses in the Blue Team and the Spartan II’s he would be hunting.”
Why send someone so inexperienced in the field as a Spartan? Is ONI using Locke simply because he’s inexperienced and thus more prone to blindly obey orders?

Inexperienced as a Spartan but not as a soldier/operative

But if he were so great, surely he would have been asked to join the spartans earlier? Also, I can’t see a reason why he’s even on Osiris, let alone the leader? Seems like Buck is the clear choice here, since he’s twice his age and seems to have been a Spartan for ~5 years.

Has Buck been a Spartan for that long?
Edit; scrap that yes he has but he has no interest in being in command

Because he’s an “Acquisitions Specialist”… That’s what he did for ONI prior. So why not have him lead a Fireteam of Spartans to hunt? Obviously they/he wouldn’t be strong enough to take down an S-II in standard issue field gear. So MJOLNIR-GEN2 was offered.
“You are a hunter, yes? A seeker of things.
and now you hunt other Spartans.”
It all makes sense now. In the new gameplay trailer, Chief just turns his back and says hes got a job to do. Giving no -Yoinks!- to about what Locke is saying. LOL. Probably knows Locke is a scrub and doesnt take him seriously.

This. He was an LC, I believe, in ONI prior to becoming a Spartan.

No, not at all. His augmentation process into a Spartan was likely to facilitate his assignment to track down Blue Team specifically. ONI knew that unless he was as Spartan himself, he’d have no ability to actually capture/subdue Blue Team even if he did manage to find them.
He is the leader of Osiris because he is far higher in rank than anyone else on the team. He is an O-4, whereas Buck is an E-7, Tanaka is E-5, and Vale a civilian before becoming a Spartan. He also has infinitely more experience conducting the type of mission Osiris has been tasked with carrying out than anyone else on the team. The others have specific skill sets that will undoubtedly come in handy during their mission, but the driving force behind how to carry out that mission is Locke.
Finally, Locke’s previous job as an Acquisitions Specialist was within ONI, so he knows how they operate and the higher echelons of ONI would prefer to have “one of their own” as the commander of this all-to-important mission.

And that’s it for Buck. New Blood ended with him telling Musa he didn’t want to lead for a while. I think we’ll see that desire rise again once he starts chafing under Locke on this mission.

Probably. I’m getting a pretty strong “government patsy” vibe from Osiris.

I think they fight in before that and its just not shown in the trailer because Chief’s visor gets mysteriously cracked around then.

I wonder if the scene from the very first teaser, Chief in the desert, takes place after that fight because it was cracked in that, too.

I’d like to still point out, however, that Locke is ranked as Lieutenant Commander. The only other Spartan IV that ranks higher than his is Sarah Palmer.
It just doesn’t make any sense given the complete lack of experience as a Spartan. Hell, look at how Ilsa Zane worked out for them?
I agree that on one hand, Locke does seem like a poor choice. However, you should consider what Locke did before becoming a Spartan. He worked for ONI, mostly on retrieving important objects from the enemy and, more importantly, the tracking and assassination of high value targets. That experience would be valuable for the missions Osiris is being sent on. How many Spartans do you think actually have that kind of experience? Not many.

Maybe, but that was such an early teaser I don’t really think it’ll be in game. Either way it looks great!

I just seems like the UNSC/ONI have a track record of selecting very poor commanders for the Spartans. Sarah Palmer, now Spartan Locke…

It could have just been a generic teaser, or maybe it could have been the seed of a cinematic between missions. I dunno, it’s a very overt detail to be in both.
To be fair, the guy could fight, hunt and lead before becoming a spartan, becoming one doesn’t change that. And he’ll of finished his spartan training and will know what he’s capable of.
