Open World or Not?

Would you like Halo Infinite to be an open world game or a linear game (how it has been in the past). I am very undecided if I want the game to take the step to becoming open world or just staying as a classic linear game. I wouldn’t even mind both together to be honest! What are your thoughts on this? Would you want to make the switch to open world or would you rather keep it the same?

I don’t want to see it be open world as much as open ended. The early missions in CE were just open enough to feel like you had breathing room, but not cramped like 5

I would like Halo Infinite to be open world. Whether we get that or not is another story. I preferred the Halo CE levels, any improvement on that would make me happy.

if they do it right I think it could be a great fresh new idea for the franchise

I’m thinking a kinda semi-open world, like the Missions ‘Halo’, ‘The Silent Cartographer’ in CE, ‘The Covenant’ in Halo 3 or the entire campaign of Doom’16.

I personally would love to see an open-world Halo game in the future, I don’t believe that it should be in the mainline games which have always been traditionally linear.

if done right sure why not

I love Halo if it turns to open world i’m going to cry forever

I would like a linear mission structure with level design that encourages exploration, but that is not too open ended to compromise on the pacing or quality of encounters. As much as open world games are in vogue nowadays—and in fact, partially precisely because they are—not every game should be open world. There is value in carefully laid out and carefully paced missions. It’s a unique experience that allows the story to be more focused and elevates the role of combat. And in my opinion, it gives the single player experience much more replayability.

Halo Infinite should have a mission based structure like Halo games have traditionally had, but those levels should vary in style from moment to moment. Some parts of levels could be entirely traditional, others might provide different paths, and others still could be very open. Most levels should have a clear path through them that a player can follow to the end, but I think Halo would benefit from giving options for players to get off the beaten path. Because even though I wouldn’t want to go full open world, I think exploration is part of the Halo single player experience, and could be improved upon by giving players choice during campaign missions that aren’t relevant for the objective.

I would like to play what 343 thinks can achieve better. I don’t really care if Infinite will be open world or not but I want to play in a very big environment that gives me a sense of mystery and wonder, where exploration is rewarded, where I have to use a Warthog in order to move faster instead of sprinting for hours like an idiot.

i would like more linear like previous games with maybe open levels where you can explore a bit.

keep in mind: an open world has to be filled with something and many open world games out there are filled with hollow characters and boring, repeating quests. i don’t think halo can work as open world without drastic changes to how the game works.

Part of me wants linear with larger play spaces but the other part of me wants open world so I can explore more, goof around, and increase play time.

Personally, I would LOVE open world. The sandbox shooter side of Halo (along with setting/worldbuilding) was what drew me in.
But what about this:

Do both.
Keep a story-driven, classic MC campaign, but add a separate mode for co-op where you build your Spartan and then are thrown into a persistent fight to hold off a Covenant Invasion. You choose missions, team up with your mates, the missions you win contribute to an ongoing storyline. Sort of “Halo:Wildlands”, but with a nice gritty “Halo: Reach” style backstory.

Sorry - bit demanding probably, more Halo would be great anyway - but, y’know, “don’t ask, don’t get”

This sounds similar to Spartan Ops, what with having an ongoing story line. I like the idea, but I’d just rather 343 focus on a good campaign that is linear with a little bit of open world exploration like “Halo” and “Silent Cartographer” in CE. Once 343 establishes a well thought out and fun game play experience, then perhaps a DLC like this could be a fun addition. I just don’t want to see 343 get bogged down in development purgatory by adding a bunch of game modes that aren’t individually that good, when they could just make a singular and complete game mode that is great.

My thoughts exactly. Hybrid open-world enough to still maintain the encounter pacing that has been the mainstay through all the campaigns.

For a spin-off, trying an open world structure might not be a bad idea. I don’t see how it’d work out though, the events of any Halo game take place over a vast area with large amounts of travel time between them. You couldn’t make the game have multiple quests and side quests that can be completed at your leisure; you’re fighting a war. You can’t hold off on fighting those aliens who are about to activate a super weapon to give someone a mammoth tusk, it needs to be done at that moment.

I hope any rumors of it being open world are only talking about open spaces, like we see in the mission Halo in CE. I’d love for more open spaces and more freedom to move around in missions instead of just the linear hallways of shooting galleries we have. But I’d want the game to remain a linear mission based campaign like all of the others.

Thats why Bungie made halo 1 as like a mystery feel to explore then continue that till reach then 343 took over that till halo 5 messed up the story of being wonky

Yep, well said, I get where you’re coming from. I love the open world approach - but I agree, I’d take a solid Halo game over an open world game that didn’t work. As you say, like Spartan Ops DLC - but maybe with a persistent campaign that’s effected by player actions. Would certainly extend the game’s life.
Most of all I hope they look back at the best of Halo and give us wide-open, sandboxy level design, (goes misty-eyed at the mention of Halo and Silent Cartographer  ) rather than linear and full of cutscenes. All signs are positive so far. Stoked that 4 player co-op is back.
