Open World or Linear?

Just wondering if you guys think 343 is going for more open world or another linear style Halo? Me personally I would love Halo: Infinite to be more open world but still have linear missions, like maybe have a concept sort of like Destiny with a social area but only for mission debriefings and then the missions themselves linear with some exploration. What do you guys think? Would you rather it be completely open world, stay linear like halo 5: Guardians, or more in between where it’s still linear but some exploration included?

Im gonna go with open world. I have some pretty neat ideas on how it could work too that I plan on making a post about once I’ve got it all written up nicely…

I doubt it will be something like Destiny just for the reason that there would be a ton of chiefs running around the social space, also if we were just confined to a Halo ring I would be quite disappointed, I honestly want a linear Halo akin to previous Halos, the openness of prior Halos was always enough for me.

I’m pretty determined that it should have linear missions with more expansive environments where the player has more choice in how they get through the mission than in the past. The amount of freedom should change depending on the setting and the pacing of the mission. However, there are various reasons why the game shouldn’t have a fully open world campaign. One of the reasons is that the Halo campaigns have always been quite story driven, and the more free-roam you make the game, the more the story gets pushed to the background, and the game becomes more about the player than the story.

The other reason is that splitting the game into missions allows much more variation in the environments. Even in a game like Breath of the Wild that does a lot of things right to avoid the open world syndrome, you still have that “Hey, I can see my house from here!” problem; the world will inevitably end up feeling small. You’d have this huge Halo ring, but somehow every point of interest is in this 20x20 kilometer area? Halo CE sure would’ve been a lot different if you had seen the Pillar of Autumn, Thruth and Reconciliation, and the control room all from Silent Cartographer.

Open world makes sense for games where the open world truly is its self-contained world, like the kingdom of Hyrule, or the island state of Medici. In Halo, there really isn’t such a self-contained world, so it makes no sense to restrict the world to be smaller than it could be.

I’d say we stick with the formula of linear, but who says the recipe can’t be changed up a bit?
Linear doesn’t mean straight corridors, getting from A to B, without little exploration. Take a look back on big levels from past games, the 2nd lvl of the first game wasnt linear- You actually had alot of freedom in that particular mission!
Gravemind, from Halo 2… Long… big… And heck if you were smart, you could sneak around on the telemetry, getting past enemies like an almost unintentional stealth mechanic. Oh blast and don’t forget The Ark from Halo 3… That was some size of a mission! Also again, it had a few choices here and there that affected the mission.

I wouldn’t say much about Halo 4… that had a pretty straight forward thing going for it.
Halo 5 had optional routes, secret rooms and weapon stashes- This i do believe, in combination with the large levels of previous games, and the beautiful new engine, would stun all Halo fans, both past, present and future.

I wouldn’t like for a main-line Halo game, to be ‘open world’ but something like… ‘explore whilst you’re there’
If that makes any sense.

I wouldn’t mind an open world game but It would be very difficult to pull off properly. There is a lot of stuff that could go wrong and just cause it to fall flat and be dull like how Destiny’s fate was. But maybe (just being hopeful) they could make a normal story like the ones in the earlier Halo games that were super expansive and then have an open world Multiplayer mode, like a war zone type mode but free roam. Honestly I think it’s a 100% chance that won’t happen but it would be sorta neat

I think it’s gonna be closed world and circular

I wrote up my ideas:

I would like a traditional linear Halo FPS game with some more open areas for larger battles for example or somewhat branching roads like in “Halo” level of the Halo:Combat Evolved.

Agreed bro, I believe the best “open world” esque game would be linear mission like before but certain missions are MASSIVE aka silent cartographer or AOTCR from Halo CE but jack it up to 100 on steroids with huge open maps that play out much differently depending what order you attack objectives etc. I destiny like game in Halo will be a big failure that’s my personal opinion.
