Open letter to 343i; regarding griefers

Hello all,
I want to share an experience that I had recently in Big Team Battle that has become all too common in The Master Chief Collection. Griefing, and destroying your teammates’ vehicles. Link to theater clip of the game, 15-minutes long - YouTube
If you are unable to watch the entire video, the important points are below. However, just know that this player spent the entire 15-minutes griefing his team.

  • 4x Scorpion Destroyed (w/1 failed attempt) - 2x Rockethog Destroyed - 4x Attempted Teammate Kill - 1x Warthog Destroyed - 3x Falcon Destroyed - 1x Mongoose Destroyed - 11 vehicles destroyed totalRecent other examples of this kind of behavior include:
griefing - Pastebin.com - Pastebin link since you can’t direct link on these forms

  • Reddit, “Don’t be this guy” - Reddit, “We need a way to report quickly” - Reddit, “Enraging Video” - Reddit, “Why do people do stuff like this” - Waypoint, “Ban Players that commit suicide the whole game” - Waypoint, “Smurfs, Griefers, And trolls” - Waypoint, “Halo CE Griefing with ghosts” - Waypoint, “Unsporting behavior is getting out of hand”My intention for this letter is not to dox anyone, however I do have a copy with the full HUD (player names included) if anyone from 343i would like to look, I did report this player.
Currently there are a few ways to deal with actively sabotaging teammates (or “griefers”) that are almost where they need to be, but fall short in a few ways. Again, this letter is to be constructive, not to criticize.

  • Team-killing is no longer allowed, nor even is team damaging. This does prevent griefers from damaging a teammate to almost the point of death, only to be killed in retaliation, giving the griefer the ability to boot the non-aggressive teammate.
- a. Team-killing being allowed seems to be in modes other than BTB

  • A report player feature has been added to the post-game carnage report. While helpful, this doesn’t change the immediate effect of the game.I’m proposing a few different solutions, which can be implemented individually or in combination. I’d also ask that the community propose solutions, or if they have examples from other games that could be a building block to please share.

  • Expand the reporting feature to be in game, rather than post game. Include 2-4 options of the most common faults (i.e., AFK, griefing) where a player can quickly select an offending teammate and why they would like to report them. If 2 or more teammates report the same option, then a vote to kick the offending teammate is presented to the rest of the team. Additionally, when someone is kicked, the video of their game from both their perspective and the perspective of the voters is uploaded to a server (hopefully to be reviewed for authenticity either by 343i or the community). This 3-tiered system would in all likelihood prevent most false positives. - Assign vehicles to a “team” upon spawn, and keep the team flag until the vehicle is destroyed or captured by the other team. Apply the same logic where a Blue Griefer cannot damage a Blue Teammate where a Blue Griefer cannot damage a Blue Vehicle. This will ensure that vehicles remain operational for their intended duration, rather than getting destroyed by someone who just wants to ruin others fun. - When a player is known to be a griefer, they are taken out of general matchmaking and then put into matchmaking with other griefers.Even if none of these options are implemented, the community would ask that this be given serious consideration for both Halo MCC, Halo 5, and Halo Infinite.
Thank you for your time, wjHarness

griefing/trolling will always be a part of gaming culture, but that also doesn’t mean 343 can’t do anything to prevent it.

I watched the first 1:45 of the video. Why are you protecting the griefer’s identity? More people should be aware of who he/she is so that they might recognize the GT in the future, know to be on the lookout for if he/she is being a -Yoink- bag, & subsequently report him/her for said griefing.

Hi Jaida,

Honestly it was something I’ve been debating, but to hell with it: REDACTED. My gut feeling is that it’s probably a temp gamertag they use when they get banned

I would like reports to be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. That’s it.

Yes but the difference is in certain playlists I can’t kick them when there blowing up my vehicle since destroying occupied ally vehicles doesn’t kill me/us so they continue to ruin it for everyone else.

Perma ban these toxic players.

I’d edit that GT out if I were you to avoid a ban. It’s not totally fair but it’s the rules.

Not sure I’d go that far but yeh these type of players deserve a fair decent sized ban for doing this. Probably with perma bans is they might just end up using dummy accounts then repeat the trolling.

Oh I would without even second guessing. And if you use dummy account still gotta buy game pass again. Make them pay.

Not sure about that but either way I wish 343i would deal with the griefers and afk problem. The state of online is just becoming more frustrating.

“Naming and shaming” will get you on the bad side of the mods. Plus giving these people notoriety is what they’d want.

I’m mainly connecting to West US from here in Australia and its been alright. Get the occasional tool on my team who takes my shields down with his AR but the only real problem I have come across is a few people in ranked who like to queue on accounts with 100 gamer score and be as close as afk as they can get away with.

I wish theyd dedicate more power to dealing with these people…

Hopefully Infinite has a better system of dealing with vehicle griefers than we have had in the past. With it being the first free to play halo multiplayer experience.
I imagine the capacity for mass trolling is going to be there. Probably within each game/ games you play on a given day.

I hate vehicles, I think that guy has the right idea

The amount of trolls and griefers on this game and games in general is sickening. I can understand being mad at a game but killing your own teammates and or destroying your teams vehicles just because you either were too slow to get there first or just because you feel like it drive me insane. There needs to be something put into motion that will stop those from constantly ruining other players gaming experiences.
