Open Letter: 343Industries RE Auto Aim Assist

Dear 343Industries,

I would like to voice to you, my concerns with, your enabled only aim assist in Halo 4. This feature,
although useful to many players, can at times be quite bothersome to higher level players. It has
the tendency, to steal focus from a given target, in instances where multiple targets overlap. This
is most noticeable when a player finds themselves in a (1 v 2 + x) scenario where x could be as high as 6 in big team games.

For instance,

  • Player 1 is advancing down a hallway.
  • Player 2 and Player 3 are both running at Player 1 from the opposite end of the hallway.
  • Player 2 crosses or jumps behind Player 3, while Player 1 has crosshairs on Player 3,
    Player 1s crosshairs follow Player 2 and effectively disengaging Player 1 from Player 3
    giving a slight advantage to Player 3, in addition to the 2 v 1 advantage already shared
    by Players 2 & 3.

My suggestion as to remedy this would be to either

A. Add a simple client side setting to enable/disable auto aim assist.
B. Add a client side setting that would allow users to adjust the individual sensitivity and
range detection settings in the auto aim assist.
C. Change settings in the aim assist it self, to allow for calls for timer variables stored
every time the crosshairs select a target, as to create a tendency for the crosshairs to more
accurately follow the currently selected target.

This is by and far my largest critique of Halo 4 and even with this, Halo still has some of the best
Gameplay your going to find on a console FPS.

Since I have your attention, A few other notes on my personal wish list for this game.

  1. Colorwheel for HUD elements independent to each loadout.

Every once in a while, I forget which loadout I have selected. Many have similar guns
but varied armor abilities etc. and as situations dictate, I find mind self switching
between these more often, to bring certain grenades and armor abilities into certain
types of encounters. Being able to change the standard blue, to a color such as orange,
purple, red, white, etc would give me an additional visible marker to let me know my
current loadout, without adding or removing anything from the HUD.

  1. Redo the game finder as follows.

Infinity Slayer (1v1) - (8v8) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Slayer Pro (1v1) - (8v8) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Swat (1v1) - (8v8) {check/uncheckas user definable/automatic}
Infinity Free for All (2-10) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Free for All Pro (2-10) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Regicide (2-10) {check/uncheck as user definable or automatic}
Team Regicide (2v2) - (8v8) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Domination (2v2) - (8v8) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
CTF (2v2) - (8v8) {check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Odd Ball/Team Odd Ball (2-10) + ((1v1) - (8v8)){check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
King of The Hill (2-10) + ((1v1) - (8v8)){check/uncheck as user definable/automatic}
Community Playlist (2-10) + ((1v1) - (8v8))
Random FFA/Slayer (2-10) + ((1v1) - (8v8))
Party Games Playlist (2-10) + ((1v1) - (8v8))[games like Flood Griffball Oddball etc.]
Weekly/Weekend Playlist (2-10) + ((1v1) - (8v8))

  1. Turn on/off secondary color for each piece of gear in the armory independently.

… So simple, yet so good.

Autoaim/so on needs to be much lower for almost all the weapons, which would also help your issue.

Your issue has been a problem in almost all shooters for such a long time you’d really think they would have fixed it.

No in all seriousness have you seen this? I’ve noticed it once but that’s because the other guy was lagging like crazy.

Seriously though, I have it happen to me on the daily. Haven for example, I will be on the lower level, guy is behind me shooting, Shields get popped, i turn the corner, and dead.

Now I went back and watched the films, cuz killcams are worthless. One of two things happened here.

  1. The bullet went right through the wall.

  2. The bullet turned the corner with me a the very last second.

Any way you slice it, its still crap.

Auto aim is not new. I thought high level players compensated. That’s kinda how they got to be high level.

i am on a hardlined 25x25 linear up/down with a 17ms ping. I shouldnt lag.

Sounds like the easy way out. Host should be determined then by best connection of the entire roster.

I hate when that scenario happens. I’ve been killed, only because someone jumped pass my cross hairs. I tried so hard to break away and refocus my reticule, but by that wasted time, I’m dead.
