Onyx skill level

What do you guys estimate it takes in play time per week to get to an onyx skill level?

I was late to the multiplayer shooter party so first game I ever put any serious time into was halo 5 and by serious time I would estimate maybe a couple hours per week when factoring in work and other daily responsibilities.

All playtime for that game is on a different gamer tag but I started bronze rank and highest rank in halo 5 I got was diamond 1 in slayer. For infinite I currently am sitting at platinum 6 which is really good for me and I estimate I play 30-60min per day. With that amount of play time I can see my rank getting to low diamond, but how much more would I need to play to reasonably be able to grow enough as a player to reach onyx rank?

It doesn’t take time. It takes a team. A team can get it done in one night

The rank system in Infinite is a lot more forgiving than in Halo 5.

If you play efficiently to improve then you could do it quickly. Stop wasting time in Quickplay, focus on the BR and actively play to improve. Working on your call-outs in pretty important.

Watch better players than you play on YouTube and have a look at yourself in Theatre. See those times where you challenged when you really should have backed down etc Perhaps find someone to play with you that has a similar skill level and the same goal.

I’ve been 2 or 3 games off Onyx myself for over a week. My gf just started playing so I’ve been stuck teaching her how to play in social for a while

The rank system ist broken even if you won a match you can derank all its about getting a positive K/D it doesn’t matter if you capture a flag or got the ball most time if you get a negative K/D probably you will see a red line in your rank or a very light blue one

It took me about 2 weeks IIRC, so I’d say that is about the time it would require to get to Onyx skill level. In reality though, you could get into Onyx in 1 week with enough practice and map knowledge. Onyx is very forgiving, where until you hit Diamond 5 or 6 you basically never go down, so its just a matter of learning things and practicing your shot.

Running stacked you can easily do it one night, if you’re good solo, can hold your own and then some, maybe throw out a ping here, and play OBJ, you can do it in a day or two.

If you placed diamond or in the tier before it, you can get to Onyx no sweat.

I mean… lots of players could play as much as they want and never hit onyx skill level. Most players will not have the ability to hit Onyx no matter what.

However, if you are around Onyx skill level, it doesn’t take long to grind up to Onyx rank.

I’ve gotten to Platinum I solo. This is incorrect.

Solo/Duo exists for a reason.

That’s platinum. Not onyx

He’s saying that there’s a solo/duo playlist, you don’t need a team.

You can still get to Onyx in about a day if you place high in solo/duos.

Communicate in game, my suggestion is to use your mic in game chat.

The ping system is okay, but it lacks compared to mic chat with the team. You can receive and give more useful information.

Unfortunately, not everyone communicates, but doing so does improve your chances.

From plat 6 you should be able to get there in a reasonable amount of time. It just depends on how you perform.

Yea solo/duo exists but I saw that the ranks for that are messed up and inflated right now so I have not finished my placements in that yet and have just been playing open crossplay. Worked my way up to diamond 1 today so slowly but surely climbing the ranks.

Yes. But I didn’t get to Platinum from Diamond because I needed a team to carry me. I got good.

I can get to Onyx too. It might take a little time, but I will get there.

Messed up or not, Onyx is Onyx. I can definitely tell you that the game has certainly gotten harder as the ranks have increased throughout Diamond to Platinum.

*She but yeah, this.

Tip for everyone here, use your pinging system more often. Giving your team information will increase everyone’s effectiveness tenfold.

Strafe, duck. Stop jumping unless you’re at the end of a fight.

Use bumper jumper. Gods, use bumper jumper.

And center-mass your BR shots until you’re on shot 4. If you aren’t 4-shotting at even Platinum 1 you just aren’t going to be winning those fights much.

Doubly, you’d be surprised how lowering sensitivity can help.

When I team up with my friends we really struggle with callouts right now. Knowing what to call different parts of the map and communicate that takes some effort to learn, especially on the symmetrical maps.
Last night we were playing swat and my friend called out “there’s a guy running!..” We gave him crap for the rest of the night for that pivotal piece of information.

I think you got your ranks mixed up because diamond is a higher rank than platinum. Also checked on halo tracker and you are diamond 1 rank lol.

I do agree that the matches get tougher the higher you climb. It also seems like it matches teams vs teams and solo vs solo even in open crossplay. Because I play well solo or with one other friend, but I when I played with a full team of 4 we got rolled but we did not have good communication.

Use the ping system while you learn, it goes a long way, you get a visual indication as well as the name of the pinged location and is significantly easier than fumbling around trying to describe whatever location you’re shooting at or are currently at.

Pings are also super helpful with people who don’t have mics, don’t know callouts, or you’re unsure if they can hear you.

But it is heavily encouraged to learn the callouts so you don’t have to move your hand to hit whatever binding your ping is set to and so you don’t have to turn your head to see what’s being pinged, you’ll just know off the top of your head.

Pro tip. Everytime you die just scream “1 shot on my x”

Lol that’s the only callout I know

Yeah I meant to say from Platinum TO Diamond and… yeah, I’m Diamond 1. lol, I, never obscured that information.

I’m aiming to hit Onyx around February.

But yeah, good communication when you’re with friends is tuuuuurbo important. It’s why I play solo. Almost none of my friends, save my buddy LiquidExecute, who’s taught me a LOT and I owe a LOT of my success to, quite frankly - are good enough to keep up with me at this point. So I stay Solo for now.

Yup which needs to be fixed. It’s so frustrating to have 2 mins as a ball carrier and go16-16-8 and barely go up 2 ranks in onyx after winning the game.

I’m seeing more and more ranked games where people don’t even bother with objective as rank only cares about KDA. Really sad to see this type of ranking system in Halo.

But make sure they aren’t actually 1 shot. Full health preferred.
