Onyx and Champions and ratings explained

making this a topic because lots of people will ask about this.

things to note:

  • there is no limit for how many people can be in onyx, anyone good enough to achieve a rating of 1500+ will be in onyx - there is a limit for how many people can be Champions - the top 200 people in the playlist - your rating != (does not equal) your ranking - there is no rating cap - there is no minimum rating for Champions, it is constantly moving. today the minmum rating to be in Champions could be 1800, but next week it could be 3000. it is dependent on the ratings of the people in Champions. - there IS a limit for onyx - 1500source: https://twitter.com/joshua_menke/status/532329525481177090

Today the cut off could be 1800, next week it could be 2950.

That system sucks. The 1-50 was the best

Very helpful, thank you OP!

I think this system is ridiculous. I agree with shady bliss and think that they should go back to a 1-50 system.

It doesnt suck. There should just be more than 10 placement matches and you should be able to rank down.

Quick question. If I make it to Onyx and lose some games is it possible to drop down to Diamond 6? I was told we couldn’t drop leagues, but this seems like an exception.

Bumping is against the rules.

Halo 5 Waypoint recently published details in the cartographers gift patch notes about Onyx in FFA incorrectly letting players into the tier.

Do you have any information about if that would mean that players are getting in with rankings below 1500 in reality but displaying the higher number?

I am currently in Onyx for FFA and after only recently joining I can assure you that that matches are most competitive I have ever played in video game history! I can still come in 1st or 2nd but far more often I am finding myself in 4th or 5th and there is usually only 1 point gaps between positions. Sometimes 1 kill difference between 1 and then 3-4 players coming in 2nd because the games are so close!

I guess what I am asking is, given the realities I am seeing with the player skill, how do we know the ranking/placement system is flawed if people are still able to compete with the other players in the tier? (As in there is almost never a case where players in the lobbies I am in are getting zero kills or not being able to compete)

Maybe this should be a different topic?

The system is flawed because I made a science of ranking up in FFA. If you place 6+, you earn points towards getting to the next tier. 7th keeps your rank the same, and coming in last is the only way you can lose progress to your next tier. Honest. I got up there going all the way up from a platinum 1. Am I saying I don’t deserve to be in Onyx? No, I still can place pretty well and even win some. I’m just confirming how flawed ranking up works in FFA.

This system better represents skill than the 50 system

How is that flawed? Especially in a seasonal context? Wouldn’t it take longer to rank up if you kept placing 6th?
