Only 30 Spartan-IIs? Then..

So only 30 Spartan-IIs survived after the augmentation process in 2525 not including those who were “washed out” and got deskjobs and whatnot. However as seen here it lists at least 40 Spartan-IIs being mentioned in the fiction.

What?

So many books to write, so few Spartans. However, one surviving theory is that some of those who “washed out” we’re actually set aside for special teams like Black, Grey, perhaps Naomi, etc. same for the IIIs (Noble).

All the Spartans that “washed-out” were put in cryo, their deaths faked. Several, like Serin Osman, were later cured. In Osman’s case, she was taken under the win of the head of ONI. Other Spartans were deployed later in the war.

Could I trouble you for a source on that?

The fall of Reach and Glasslands.

I would like a direct source for that also since i never remember it being stated they were actually put into cryo and saved. I know they ones that got messed up really bad were relocated but nothing was ever stated on the general washouts until glasslands; which i don’t remember this being stated in.

Discharged Spartans who failed augmentation proceedures or suffered psychological breakdown.

Dr. Halsey’s Personal Journal (April 1st, 2525)

"Bodies of Augmentation washouts are cryogenically preserved, pending further study. Perhaps one day we’ll discover ways to ameliorate or reverse lethal side effects and revive some, if not all, of them. That is my hope.

Reviving these candidates would be fraught with complexities - and not just from a technological perspective. How would they respond to an essentially new world when resuscitated months or even years later?

How would surviving Spartans react to their comrades’ resurrection? I certainly can’t predict. One thing is certain - ONI would find a use for them.

Those ravaged by Malformations too serious to continue in the Spartan II program have been offered various “desk” duties within ONI, thus allowing them to move on with a semblance of normality.

I’ve assigned Deja to investigate as-yet theoretical therapies that may resuscitate these washouts as fully functioning Spartans. (One protocol already looks promising: the complete bone restructuring and attendant nanografts to effectively replace the skeletal system in toto; this may prove especially useful for Rene or Kirk.)

I’ll let them adjust to their new jobs for several months before suggesting some of these experimental procedures… by which time the candidates will likely be willing to try anything to recover.

Their paths may be the most arduous of all Spartans; but I can’t see them surviving vigorous indoctrination and training only to become passive spectators."

It’s stated directly in Halsey’s Journal, and mentioned again in Halo Glasslands.

Excellent; thanks! For the record, I didn’t doubt it, I just have a hard time keeping track of whether something was stated as fact by a narrator, or stated by a character, or assumed as true by most people in the community, and whether any of the above has been retcon’d. Much obliged.

Read the book about onyx. There were several teams and generations of spartan III’s.
