This might be a dumb question but I’ve been seeing a lot of games requiring an online pass to play multiplayer. I was an unfortunate victum of renting a copy of Battle Field 3 and found this out. So is there any indication that Halo 4 will require the purchase of an online pass?
I highly highly doubt it.
I doubt Microsoft would make you pay double, for their own game’s online and xbox live.
Besides I don’t think they’re dumb enough to do that, they would lose most of their customers.
I hope not, this trend really bothers me and I refuse to buy any game from a company that insists on ripping people off like that.
I doubt they’d do an online pass, tho online passes do sound like a bad idea, but in theory they’re not, because it forces people to buy the game over renting, because in the Battle Field games, the two I have, both came with a online pass code, which gave me the online pass for free, it’s if you change your GT that it comes back to bit you. Not only does it bit you in the butt for changing your name, it does ruin your day if you buy a used copy that some one used the code. So I would not be happy if they did do an online pass deal, because that would just be annoying.
They’d better not. Online passes are the single worst thing to happen to gaming, worse than ET for the Atari. YEAH I SAID IT!
Online Pass in the way that EA and Ubisoft do it? Nah
However I’m willing to bet that there will be a Season Pass much like Forza 4 and Gears 3.

Pretty sure you only have to pay to play Ubisoft games if you got a preowned version.

EA has been doing it as well;
- Mass Effect 2 (3 will have it)
- Battlefield 3
They’re the only ones I can think off at the moment but Sony does it with Uncharted 3, you can’t go online if you have a pre-owned copy.

TBH I can’t really blame them for doing this. When someone buys a preowned game all of the profit goes to the store and none to the developers. Seems like a pretty rotten deal to me.

IMO, it’s not needed.
If so, there would only be for money’s sake.
And also EA = Earns Alot.

Meh, I don’t really care about Online Passes. If I’m going to buy a game and plan on playing the multiplayer I would have likely got it on day 1 anyway.

There is nothing wrong with preowned games. Publishers are the ones who do all the complaining because they’re the ones it supposedly effects. The developers really don’t feel it. It’s just companies like EA and Ubisoft getting greedy. You can by everything else secondhand whether it be movies, music, books, cars, furniture or basically anything else. They say it’s to cover server costs but that’s a load of BS. Server costs are covered in the initial sale of the game. If you pass on your game, you pass on your place in the server. It’s not costing them anymore. Preowned games can actually benefit publishers as well, more people play the original that way and pick up new copies of the next instalment. Online Passes are based solely around greed, nothing more.

How do the developers not feel it then?

Ripping people off?
You do realise what an online pass is for, right?
it’s to discourage second hand sales, Publishers don’t get paid any money from second hand sales.
Thye just want to get paid for the work they did, is that too much to ask?

Apparently. It seems most people expect large scale industries to work for free. Would you work for free? I think not.

When it comes to the gaming industry (and in fact most entertainment industries) the developers of a game generally get a pretty poor deal, their funding comes from the Publisher and is decided before development starts. Once the game goes on sale it’s the Publishers who reap the rewards. Obviously a small amount of the revenue goes to the developers but for the most part it goes to the Publishers. That’s why it’s always companies like EA and Ubisoft you here complaining about the sales of preowned games, because it means they’re not getting as much money as they could had everyone gone and bought the game brand new.
Also, I thought Ubisoft wer developers not publishers? On the opening cutscene for ACR it reads “Ubisoft presents a game by Ubisoft Montreal”???

Ubisoft is a publisher. Ubisoft Montreal is a developer owned by Ubisoft. Many publishers and developers work this way. Rockstar is a publisher that owns a number of developers such as Rockstar North. It’s like the relationship between 343 and Microsoft.

Nah it’s ok. I only know this stuff after spending ages looking into it all.
