online games just another form of bullying

i played halo today on my save for the 1st time in months, which was a mistake cuz it reminded me why i quit using my save when the free gold time ran out. all of you who play halo whatever & call girls -Yoink- for playing & say they want to know what it feels like to have something between their legs or kill me cuz i’m not in or wouldn’t join your group chat or stalk me so you can blow up anything i try to attack or drive, all of you who play in a game with me & call me sexual names cuz i don’t use the headset or try to kill me or get me killed even if you are on my team cuz my helmet is on fire from my brother’s special bonus thing, all of you who kill me when we are on the same team & then quit so i’m the only person left & give me negative points for quitting or unsportsmanlike conduct, all of you who do all these things & get away with it are no different than the bullies we hear about on tv making fun of bus drivers or disabled people or anyone you think you can do it to & get away with. even if i don’t know you or we never run into each other, what you do hurts people. just cuz the person you are doing it to doesn’t know who you are & your friends in your group laugh cuz they think it’s funny, doesn’t mean you aren’t harming someone.

Hey baby…whats up?

Actually, online bullies are even bigger -Yoinks!- than real life bullies since they use the anonymity of cyberspace to act all tough and obnoxious. I call them monitor heroes.

Take comfort in the fact that they act like this because they have very sad, unfulfilled lives. Happy, well balanced people don’t get all jerky over a game.

Just for the record it wasn’t me that did any of that stuff.

Just take comfort in knowing that they are disrespectful idiots and move on.
People who talk mess online usually aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, take a look at the Youtube comment section for example…

The mute button is your friend - you can even disable all chat throughout the game if you like… But to be honest, if you can’t handle a few idiots throwing insults and slurs your way then you shouldn’t be playing online games.

If you let people that you can’t even see over the Internet hurt your feelings, maybe you should see a psychiatrist.

after i posted this, a friend sent me this link:
http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/pax-east-exposing-the-harassment-female-gamers-receive-online/
it made me feel like i’m not crazy for my reasons for not using the headset & not joining people’s group chats.

here’s what one girl who commented on the article & has had stuff like this happen to her said:

> Honestly, this article describes the harassment to a T. After awhile it gets difficult to want to enjoy online gaming when you always have someone spouting off some -Yoink- to you, and it makes it even worse when they’re on your own team. When you do good, they -Yoink- on you, when you have a bad game, then -Yoink- on you. Gaming should be a community that supports every type of gamer, regardless. So many fantastic female players out there that quit or lose the love of gaming because they can’t go online without getting harassed during the game or in a msg. It’s a ridiculously hostile environment. Like if you go to the sites they mention " http://fatuglyorslutty.com/ " you can see screen shots and voice msgs from gamers sent to female gamers. It’s pretty nasty. & I hate to say it, but it’s on a fairly consistent basis. It’s not like these things happen once in awhile, it’s all the time. & I don’t agree with having to hide who I am, and to appear as a male gamer to avoid criticism. Dudes should be welcoming the ladies online! So many of my guy friends complain that they have gfs that don’t like them gaming, and here we are, the female gamers, getting -Yoink- on.

my brother originally made my save for me, but i quit playing it after the free gold time ended. he used the save when it got deals for more free time, but he made it so my name wasn’t on it so when he played on it & used his headset no one knew it was a girl’s save. i tried to get him to understand that the stuff i was telling him was happening when i played happened almost every time. so one time he played while i talked on his headset. then he understood.

there was one guy who was really nice who’s save name was caboose with some numbers. he sounded just like the real guy who does caboose’s voice on red vs blue. he didn’t understand why i don’t use a headset and i tried to explain it to him. i don’t think it all made sense to him, but he was really nice about it and i wish there were more guys like him that play online games.

do what I do. Only play in party chat. If I don’t have my mic on I have voice set to 0. It’s made gaming great these past few years.

I mainly play with friends, other than that I have some sort of habit not getting people with mics.

Harassment is a problem though. The best thing you can do is mute them and file a complaint against them.

I’ve sent GG to my opponents now and then after a really good game, and I usually get it back.

Its a shame that such a large chunk of our community is like this. This behaviour costs us many new potential players and gives us a bad rep. Its this kind of yoink that got visible k/d and ranks taken away.

Best thing I can recommend is find team-mates in the recruiting section or even in other gaming communities. A lot of my friends I met on Mass Effect 3 but also play halo.

It is truly disappointing this occurs so much. I’m sorry you had to experience the worst the online community has to offer. The only thing I can suggest is party up, play with friends, and report them and ignore. 343 is supposed to be cracking down on the abuse so hopefully things improve over time.

There are some girl gamer communities you can try checking out like /r/girlgamers at reddit where you may find some more polite company. Personally, I mute all and just party chat with mates as I grew tired of the drivel coming out of some of the XboxLive kids mouths.

I assume by save you mean GamerTag / XboxLive account.

I hope your future gaming experiences fair better.

On behalf of all the mature players out there we are sorry you had to experence this but the xbox has the most immature community out there which is very saddening, theres not much else i can offer but that so again we’re truly sorry.

Just remember that when people are bullies online, it’s usually an ugly reflection of how they feel inside. Happy people don’t lash out at others or bully them, only people who aren’t happy deep inside do that. Don’t let them ruin your fun, they aren’t worth it.

This is exactly why I only use party chat when I play. I would like to be able to communicate with others on my team, but since the majority of them talk like they are suffering from sexual hydrophobia; I don’t even bother. Play with people you know, and mute the rest. It robs them of their “voice”.

A bully is playing a game, one that he or she enjoys and needs.
You’re welcome to play this game if it makes you happy,
but for most people, it will make you miserable.
Seth Godin

It’s definitely a problem.

Try to play and/or party chat with party members that already you know, that way if the other team starts talking too much trash, you have your friends right there to back you up, instead of randoms joining in on the abuse or spitting out garbage at you.

Also, if they start harassing you, go ahead and report them or use the Xbox Live feedback system. I use feedback system so that I don’t get paired up again with specific teammates that try to team kill me, curse at everyone, or are AFK for the whole match.

These aren’t really solutions to the actual problem, but I hope they help.
