Online Coop Lag Unbearable!!! 01/21/2019

Long time Halo fan, from the day I first played it I knew it was gold. But I’m very disappointed with the lag when playing coop with my friend lately. Unplayable on Legendary!! He flew up to visit last year (Vancouver to Whitehorse 2,400km) and we played through Halo 1 and 3 on legendary locally no problem. Just tried to continue our save last night (after not playing coop for 9 months) and it was completely unplayable. The host seemed to be unaffected but the person connecting was lucky to get 15 FPS during gun fights. The frame rate/lag is all over the map. We both have good internet speeds (currently 16,000kbs down and 700kbs up for me with a 8ms ping) and have no problem playing an other online game except halo coop. Are you aware of this issue? Is there a fix in place or should we give up and sell our MCC? We both tried resetting our Xbox, modems and routers with no change in performance. I love this series too much to give up, but I’m ready too pretty soon if no fix is being planned. Please respond and let the community know what is going on.

Regards, Master Chief of the Yukon.

This has been a problem since the beginning. Let me guess, lowered frame rates, long delays in actions (fires gun a second or 2 after you press the button), and accuracy means nothing as your shots will miss because it fires where you WERE aiming and not where you are aiming just to name a few? Guaranteed they know about this and haven’t done anything to correct this since online coop was a feature. They won’t fix it because unlike every other company with online coop, they just don’t care.

Even across town 30km away on the same bloody server my brother and I get serious lag and low frame rates. Such a shame. I’d still be playing this game if it wasn’t broken.

That’s a pretty harsh statement to make considering all th work done over the last year and everything they have planned. If may not have been completely fixed yet, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been noted and added to the backlog

I guess it is a little harsh, but considering the number of games I’ve played with coop that don’t have this problem I still think it’s fair enough. Games that don’t have these problems as follows:
COD
ESO
Gears of War
Destiny
Warriors Orochi
GTA
Saints Row
Sniper Elite
Fable
Left 4 Dead
Syndicate
Halo Wars
Diablo
Dark Souls/ Bloodborne

Just to name a few that don’t have those problems enough to be noticed.

Update. Just upgraded internet to 250mbs down/15mbs up. See if that improves coop lag. Will keep you posted.

Update, makes no difference. Bought him a plane ticket instead just to play Halo for the weekend. #fixonlinecoop

I also have had the same issue through my 3 hour legendary co-op speed runs. I had to host the games to even have them be playable on my end, but the people playing with me were constantly remarking on the absurd delay and freeze ups. Even people in the same house on a different console have these lag issues (keeping in mind that this is only an issue in the co-op for this game). I hope this is something near the top of their list to fix because one of the main selling points of these games are the campaigns and achievements that go along with them. Sadly even through suffering the terrible connection problems none of us got the achievement for odst or halo 4 even though we all show completion and times on all of the levels. It’s safe to assume they have a staggering amount of bugs and issues to work out.

Update to the update: I ended up changing my DNS to my local internet provider server number instead of googles 8.8.8.8 4.4.4.4. Could be the placebo effect but my Xbox live speeds seemed way more reliable. Was actualling close to hitting my advertised speeds of 250 down. Stuff downloaded way faster, it didn’t go into kB download speeds on and off any more. I asked the same friend as above to do a speed test through his Xbox network app. Turned out his connection was a double NAT. He connected to an open port and… the game ran almost perfect. Slight delay on the non host side but completely manageable. We even tried 4 player coop and it played smooth. It sometimes freezes for all parties but was still manageable.

Moral of the story is. Not sure if either of those where the culprit but we are up and running 98%. Man I love this game.
