ONI ordered Halsey assassinated. Same for Chief?

It’s an idea that I’ve been throwing around for a while: that Locke is on a mission to kill Master Chief. Halsey is working with the covenant now, and Chief may be looking for her among others like the Didact and Cortana; if he isn’t, the Chief and Halsey are still very close and Halsey “joining” (no doubt they don’t consider her a “member”) the covenant would definitely make Master Chief a liability especially now that he’s gone AWOL. To avoid the risk, ONI could very well have tasked Locke with the assassination of the Chief in the same way that they ordered the assassination of Dr. Halsey.

I don’t remember the name of the director of ONI and I don’t feel like looking it up but what I do know is that she used to be a Spartan (I believe she was a failed subject of the physical enhancements). This makes the fact that she ordered Halsey dead intriguing. Regardless of whether or not she was friends with Chief, my theory is in no way ruled out since she was so happily eager to kill Halsey. Maybe she has some resentment for the Chief; for being better than her, for making it through augmentation in one piece, jealously…

If my theory is indeed correct, Locke is extremely arrogant for thinking he can trick the Arbiter to helping him. From what we know from the games and the terminals, Thel is as powerful as the Chief and as smart as Captain Keys. And he would know when someone is lying to him.

Finally, this might not sound like the Locke we saw in Nightfall. It seems to me that the events at Nightfall made a turning point in Locke’s life and changed his core ideology. He might not be as righteous and noble as he was when we last saw him. He’s seen what people can become when they are on the edge of death: he’s seen human nature at its ugliest point. He may no longer care about acting honorably but more by whatever means necessary. But if there’s anything we know about our dear Arbiter, it’s that he does value honor, and he would never betray his friend for the interests of his enemy.

I think Locke is going to get crushed by the Arbiter by the end of Halo 5 campaign

First off, Sara Osman is who I think you’re talking about. She was a Spartan-II washout. She’s not old enough to be Spartan-I, as they’re nothing like S-II’s.

Secondly, she is known to resent Halsey. In fact, most of the higher ONI staff and pretty much the UNSC as a whole hate Halsey’s guts. Heck, Karen Traviss, one of the writers 343 brought on to write spin-off novels, hates Halsey’s guts. Heinous Halsey is heckled horrendously.

Now, if I remember correctly, Palmer failed to kill Halsey because of her own vested interests. I think Locke will do the same. I think Locke is slowly coming to grips with the ONI’s shadiness and the UNSC’s quest for galactic domination, and he knows they’re terrified of Chief. Throughout Halo 5 he’s going to be questioning his loyalties, tracking down MC. Meanwhile MC is going to be tracking down Halsey, who is working with the Covenant.

While MC is considering joining the Covenant to work with Halsey and revive Cortana (hinted in 4) Locke is going to realize that if he does his duty, the UNSC will do horrifying things to the galaxy.

I don’t think anything will be resolved in 5. Locke and MC might meet in a climactic showdown at the end of the game, and they’ll basically look at each other and go, “Yeah…so…I’m doing stuff, wanna come along?” And the other will go, “Um…if it’s alright with you…uh…no thanks.” And the first guy will be all like, “Well okay, cool then. Just wanted to know.”

And then Halo 5 will end. Both guys will return to their day jobs and become the moral centers of their factions on opposing sides of the conflict. Oh, and Arby? He’s just there for fan-service.

(But it’s Arby, so that’s okay.)

I think ONI having Chief assassinated is entirely possible if he presents a clear and present danger, which I have reason to suspect he does.

The person who goes for chief is gonna get ****** up.

I doubt it. Halsey was ordered due to treason. And the didacts hand saved her life. Chief on the other hand is the only reason why humanity wasn’t destroyed. Jul mdama has found earth and is using the substance used in nightfall. ONI is looking for chief to fight against Mdama. Not to kill him.

The only place to get the substance was destroyed, how can 'Mdama have it?

Jul got it before ONI found out about it? Maybe the smugglers had a little extra so they could keep getting money on a regular basis

Seems odd he would wait two years to actually use it or that he would have known about while he waited for Requiem to open at the time the Shard was destroyed.

I think it is possible that Locke was sent to kill him if he wouldn’t return to the UNSC, but a combo of Chief and Arbiter means Locke would get annihilated.

The UNSC Or ONI Would never eliminate humanities greatest hero unless if he was a threat.

Locke gets whipped by either Chief or Arbiter.

Serin Osman

I don’t think ONI would order an assignation on chief, but I doubt they would let what is arguably there best weapon run around unmonitored.

Hmm, I dont think Chief would be marked for dead, at least not yet. I have a feeling that while playing as the chief sooner or later we will have to fight the UNSC, Insurrectionists are coming back, so we may either fight,or even join up with them.

Locke is not going to try and kill Master Chief. As he said in Halo 2: Anniversary, Locke is bringing back Master Chief to the UNSC so Master Chief can face legal actions for going AWOL.

I didn’t say she was a Spartan I, I know she was a SII.
The UNSC/ONI hates Halsey, yes, that’s clear, but the Chief is close to Halsey. My point still remains that their relationship could make Chief a liability.
Palmer didn’t kill Halsey because fire team Majestic showed up.
I’m not saying anything will be resolved. If anything, by the end of H5, the real conflict will be objectified. I’m expecting a showdown between Arby and Locke but MC could very well play a role in that as well. After which Locke might still have the chance to help Chief or their rivalry will be increased.
Of course we all wanted the Arbiter back, but I do think he’s there for more than just fan-service. He’s going to play an important role no doubt.

Exactly. Halsey also saved the human race, but we’ve seen how grateful the UNSC can be
