One MAJOR Problem. *343 READ THIS

First off, what an amazing comeback. This time last year we were presented with underwhelming previews of the game which ultimately pushed back its release. 343 did an amazing job bringing the franchise back where it belongs in just one year’s time. Here are a few positive highlights:

  • The graphics, textures, and audio looked very crisp and precise. - The game seems very balanced and I don’t envision “pay to win” scenarios or overpowered metas. - I think they have done an excellent job maintaining their classic approach of earning unlocks and cosmetic customizations.Looking at some of the demo content, there was something missing. What happened to the thrust mechanics? Halo 5 was ahead of its time with movement mechanics. The addition of the thrust system was the correct progression and evolution of the game. Modern gamers crave capabilities that when mastered, can give them the edge in competitive play. Think of slide canceling in Warzone, or the advanced things that can be done in Fortnite with building. The mechanics of Halo 5 were revolutionary and I don’t want to see this game take a step backward. There is no question that the majority of modern gamers demand advanced movement mechanics. Don’t believe me? Ask the tens of thousands of people watching Nick Mercs or any popular pro’s stream.

343 still has a few months to put the finishing touches on the game, so I’m sure we can all expect some awesome features to be added. There is a lot of potential for what can be added as “ground loot” like over shields and invis. Perhaps a thruster feature can be implemented into the game in a similar fashion.

I wouldnt mind the small thrust boost thing returning as long as it was adjusted to not be mandatory to get anywhere. Maps are so huge in Halo 5 that sprinting makes you feel like a damn snail.

Omni-directional dodge thrusters that have a cooldown of 10 seconds would be my ideal scenario. That way you can boost into cover or out of danger but you have to actually like… figure out what you want to do next because your thrusters dont have a 0.5 second cooldown.

just my idea, though.

I disagree i think those halo 5 movement mechanics were what ruined the gameplay and structure of the game, it is ultimately what made the game feel less like halo because the map’s ecosystem was completely messed up since u could easily climb and dash super fast around the map.
Trust me it’ll feel a lot better when you play infinite.

I’m sorry to say, but you’re in the minority here. People absolutely blasted H5 for trying to add enhanced movement, some are still unhappy that Infinite has some of it (even though what remains appears to have been significantly toned down). Trust me, if they did bring back thrusters, the Halo community would implode on itself again. If they added it as like a 2 or 3 time use pickup, then I believe most people would be fine with it.

The reflect equipment item appears to be a mini thrust. Aim at the ground and time a jump for a quick super jump combo.

That’s solid feedback. I like the idea of a longer cool down.

Thruster mechanic ruins core Halo play IMO. It is almost the primary reason my core Halo friends hated Halo 5 outside of ground pound.

The clamber and dash weren’t even that fast its just they were necessary because of how absurdly large Halo 5s maps are. And sprint was so mind bogglingly slow despite being required to get anywhere without a vehicle.

the boost feature would be fine if it wasnt A. Necessary and B. Spammable. It has barely a 1 second cooldown in Halo 5 and it’s required to get anywhere fast without vehicles.

That said would I miss it? No, not really. Clamber and sprint and slide are fine imo but anything more might become tedious and samey.

I like the idea of having a way to do a short dodge to avoid small arms fire, it wouldnt do jack against a rocket fired at the ground but it would allow you to dodge a shot that could have been fatal or the BR burst that almost cracked your shields.

A longer cooldown also enforces that you have a limitation on what you use it for, if you use it for traversal you’d have to hope your equipment can help in engagements (or you would use them in tandem for maximum effect).

But that’s all speculative.

I definitely am keeping an open mind. And your right, I’m sure they did an excellent job. I would say that perhaps the ground pound and spartan charge may have been a little overboard in H5. but those movements make the game more dynamic imho. Unlike the jet pack in halo 4. Climbing and sprinting are pretty standard for competitive combat games today. I feel like I’d get bored running around without having button sequences to press to give me the ability to move faster. Super excited either way.

The ground pound and spartan charge may have been a little accessive in H5, and I would agree that the cooldown should have longer but hear me out. Let’s say you were running in real life, the faster you move your legs, the faster you go. SHouldn’t be the same in gaming? I just feel that there should be a method to move your hands and fingers quicker to move faster and more elusive. standard running and jumping are not enough today.

I know it’s a different game, but when Fortnite came out the concept of building was completely incomprehensible. If you watch games now it’s fascinating what they can do. I am in no way shape or form suggesting anything like that for Halo, but I was watching a streamer playing Halo 5 last night and it was quite amazing what he was doing with the thrusters. I see it as another tool for talented gamers to give themselves the edge.

I think calling it a major problem is pushing it a little out of proportion.

I’m sure they’ve considered it, and have seemingly decided it was best not to include it, for whatever reason. I doubt that they haven’t added it purely to spite fans of it.

Absolutely not, no thanks (Some men just wanna watch the world burn)

Screw thrusters as a starting mechanic, have them as a map pickup that has a set number of uses and that’s it. I’ve been saying since Halo Reach that they should’ve expanded on equipment rather than armor abilities and advanced movement and now they’re finally going back to that. Map pickup single use equipment suits Halo.

No just no! 343 is pushing Halo into the right direction!! The better player should always win!

  • Thruster Pack - It gave players the chance to “thrust and run away” 9/10 and the 1 time it’s actually used to Thrust to the left or right to dodge someones shot.
  • Ground Pound - Was like Armor Lock but worse "this gave players easy kills from above or even to escape the battlefield…
  • Spartan Charge - Gave players the OK to hold sprint until you find someone and then Charge and melee.

Trust me, 343 is moving Halo in the right direction. Too many button combos in a game doesn’t mean its good…

A bit surprised that you’re seemingly unaware of the open hostility regarding the Enhanced vs. Classic movement debate amidst Halo fans.

What I see 343i doing with Infinite is trying to strike a balance by removing a few of the more contraversial features from H5’s dramatically different movement scheme while leaving all movement mechanics as base player traits rather than loadout abilities that are alternated like Armor Abilities were in Reach and H4.

The problem with that is that there simply is no pleasing everyone with movement at this point. Folks who are fans of enhanced mobility will hate that it’s being toned down at all, and fans of classic movement won’t be satisfied when so many of the features remain.

There’s no question that there has been a trend in FPS games that leans into enhanced movement, but I do take a bit of exception to the idea that enhanced movement is, as you suggest, a unilaterally desirable thing for the “majority of modern gamers.” The conventional FPS genre isn’t the undisputed king of the hill anymore, with F2P, Battle Royale, character shooters, and Looter-Shooter RPGs all proliferating in the prominent space that used to belong almost exclusively to CoD, Halo, and Battlefield. There’s genuine need for Halo to stand out against all of these other games in order to maintain its own niche, and capitulating to FPS movement trends may not be a great way to accomplish that. While the debate around whether or not enhanced mobility is a good thing is certainly intense, I don’t think it’s nearly as contraversial to suggest that Halo felt a lot more distinct from the rest of the shooter crowd before Reach spilled the proverbial Sprint milk.

Like some people have already said: This is not the general consensus, sorry. But that does not mean your point is invalid. But I’d like to explain why advanced movement is nowhere near as good as basic. Please, do not refer to Halo 3 and previous as examples of basic movement. The movement speed is actually pretty dated in my opinion. Spartans would not walk that slow anyways. Reach and 4 are examples of adding abilities that increase movement dynamics, not so much speed. Guardians was fun. In fact, it was the MOST fun multiplayer in my opinion. Thrusters were insanely useful. Sliding was nice. Clamber was much needed. But the other abilities are why 5’s movement mechanics were hated by the community. In fact, many enjoyed slide and clamber. Sprint is iffy. ADS wasn’t too bad to some. But charge, pound, etc. were absolutely hated. I am happy that with this new experience we’ll be seeing some insane new equipment. The repulsing pick-up seen in the trailer not only deflects gunfire but it can boost you off the ground to wherever you want. The grapple-shot is a great new way to flank enemies or pull right into battle. Those, and others, are the new advanced movements. You say you wish for 5’s movement because it allows players to master them and give them an upper hand. But clearly, the new pick-ups, power-ups, vehicles, and weapons are all apart of a fluid experience. In the multiplayer reveal recently a guy grapple-shotted into the air and sniped another guy across the map. There was also a guy who repulsed, flew into the air, and decimated enemies with a gravity hammer. The Yoroi armor clip where he threw the grenade, shot an enemy, jumped, grabbed the flying energy sword, and killing the other target was what 343 CLEARLY wants. They don’t want frantic boosting and jumping and charging around. They want players to chain together combinations of equipment, pick-ups, movement, weapons, and vehicles into combat. I hope my point of view kind of sheds light on the revert back to more classic arena combat.

Definitely a well-articulated point. And I certainly agree that the ground pound and the spartan charge were exploited. I still believe optimizing H5 movement would have been ideal. I think you could have decreased thrust distance and increased cool-down times. There are times when you need the ability to retreat. If you finish a battle and have a low shield you are susceptible to an easy clean-up from a third party. Sometimes you need to let your shields recharge before re-engaging. You see that with players who have high Kill/Death ratios. Sure, the new equipment can do those things, but to be honest, I would say the grapple and some of the other things shown in the demo will create more controversy. They remind me of the equipment in H4 that everyone really hated. IDK I just really thought keeping the playing field even and starting everyone out with the same abilities was the way to go. I’m sure you’ll have people camping equipment and they’ll find ways to exploit that as well. But your right, it’s going to be great either way. This was the one thing I feel would have improved the game even more.

If I’m going to be honest I heavily disagree, halo 5 movement didn’t make it feel like halo anymore
