On the subject of Ranking

This thread isn’t to propose a new system. It’s not to complain about the one H4 will use. It’s more of a rant so I may see who agrees, disagrees, and have KIND, WELL THOUGHT OUT DISCUSSIONS on the subject.

When it comes down to it, I LOVE visible ranking systems. I think using them adds a competitiveness to certain playlists, and adds a good longevity to the game. I also believe that EXP based systems are good as well. Even bad players, given enough time and effort, deserve to have something to show for it.

The system in Reach I feel was a good start. Every ranking system will have exploits, and every ranking system will have great aspects.

With Halo 4, I’m speculating that we will have some sort of competitive rank. Not a 1-50, not The Arena, but something. We don’t know what it is yet, Frankie has said so himself. I feel the only reason people hate The Arena’s system, was because in Halo 2-3, you’d get a 50 and be the best. In Reach, you could be even better, and rank gold. Simply because people were ranked higher than you for doing better. If The Arena’s system were to not show your personal percentile, and just Onyx, a lot more people would have lovied it. A lot of people are just put off that they aren’t automatically “the best” at 50 anymore. Plus the matchmanking system was bad in Reach in my own humble opinion.

In Halo 3, you had the problems of boosters. Boosters caused mass amounts of people to quit games and eventually lose on purpose when quitting became bannable. As there are many ways to combat this, it’s not worth the effort to “put a new transmission in an old car” so to speak. While I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 1-50 system, I HATE HATE HATE the egotistical morons and cockiness that comes with the mass amounts of sold and bought 50s. As long as my ranking system has solid TrueSkill matchmaking, I’m not too concerned about visible rank. A lot of other people feel a lot different about that, and I’m not opposed to their opinions.

The one thing I hate to see gone from Halo 3, is the playlist EXP. It was nice to have those achieveable ranks to show off what you play the most. It was a good way to calculate how good somebody was based off their win percentage. Some will argue that it’s not completely accurate and double XP and such, but that’s like using the “wikipedia isn’t a good source of information” from teachers. Yes, it’s not dead on correct, but there’s vast truth in it.

Well i’m just glad the ranks aren’t visible if that is the case.

I’ve gotten sick and tired of people going ‘‘Oh no it’s a general/inheritor, we’re so ****ed’’

They then leave because they sh** bricks over a rank. For the love of god man. I can live without virtuel numbers and symbols, easy.

Another problem that could be avoided with the correct implementation of TrueSkill. If people are afraid of 50s, yet they’re being matched up against them, they’re either really lazy, or the system was wrong.

I’m really on the fence about what I want. As long as it’s fair, and the people I play against are challenging, I’ll be fine.

I would like to see the TrueSkill 1-50 system completely re-done. I think it would be amazing if we had leagues. So you you would play placement matches, get placed in a league and then try to get into the next one.

You would retain your league for a season which might last anywhere from 3 to 6 months and then you and everyone else would reset and have to place again. This would stop people from selling accounts I think.

There would be no unlocks or achievements of ANY KIND associated with what league you place in. The reward would be the skill set you have gained and attaining access to the league itself.

You will never see the True Skill number associated with your account and only see the league you are in. When playing social games IE custom games or in a social playlist (if there is one) your league doesn’t show up anywhere unless a player selects you and inspects your stats.

Or something like this…
