On the Precursors and the Third Vector of Chaos

Link.

Looking at the intertextual references across Origins II, the Forerunner Saga, Broken Circle, and Hunters in the Dark, we begin to see that there is something notable about the pattern which emerges when looking at the way in which conflict is essentially written into the fabric of the Halo universe and how it causes the fall of civilisations.

The base premise of this post was to examine how the Precursors have structured life for the predefined outcome of “failure and pain”, as decreed in Silentium, and it seems that a little piece of philosophy from the Prophet of Inner Conviction in Broken Circle holds the answer.

That was an AMAZING read.

The Domain IS the Precursors, and this time they’ll be using the Guardians rather than the Flood. 343i are setting up humanity to fail the Precursor test (because of ONI’s dirty work). What that means going forward, I don’t know. Maybe the Flood returns in Halo 6?

I definitely see Master Chief trying to reunite the Galaxy against the Precursor threat. The Arbiter will be his bridge to the Covenant races, Lydius might be the Brute connections and Hood the human side. Making peace and uniting against the mutual threat would then make them all reclaim the Mantle.

Wow I can’t wait for the second part. This was incredible.

Very very interesting. This definitely ties a lot of loose ends and clears a lot up. I love it! Thank you for sharing the link!

The Domain is just a Precursor, not the Precursors as a whole. There are many kinds of Precursors. The Flood is another kind.

Very interesting article, I want to see more opinions on this. It seems likely that the flood are going to return in H6.

Another Haruspis article?! I have just been made a happy Halo fan.

Edit: -Yoink-, I have to finish reading Hunters in the Dark before you post the next one! At least this gives me some more incentive to put all my other projects down for a bit and read what’s been a damn good book so far.

Good read, Chronarch! I should probably make my own notes as well. Can’t believe I’ve never thought of doing that.

Also, thanks for resurrecting my old post. I remember being happy that I finished it, then upset at the poor quality. Now that so much time has passed, I no longer feel like it’s a piece of crap.

Anyway, best part of the write up was finding the tangible evidence for the Precursor’s geas that they imposed on the Forerunners. Given that every living thing is has the laws of the Mantle inscribed in their genetic code, I now realize that the Precursor threat could be even more deadly than originally thought. My thoughts range from genetic programming that cause FSCs to spontaneously arise to just outright decay and die.

Given the severity of such an attack like that, one that we’d be entirely unprepared for, I wonder if this is where the stoics come back into play. 3,000 years ago they already had a frightening mastery over genetic manipulation. If they did indeed survive the collapse of their star (if it even did collapse), then their mastery over genes could be on a level where they would be able to halt any saftey measures the Precursors installed in their creations.

Just finished reading and it is quite the interesting read, but I do have a question regarding those comments by Frankie. You say that Frankie said Osiris’ mission will shift dramatically towards the second half and I’m curious if you have a source on that, for my own interests.

In the E3 interview (by Xbox Daily?) with Kiki Wolfkill and Frank O’Connor, Frankie said that Sunaion was about the midway point of the game and that things were going to be changing radically in the second half. The interview can be found on youtube.

I’ve had your geas analysis saved in my favourites for a long time, I was glad to be able to make use of it - I remember when you were writing it up and we were all chatting about it in the old b.net chat :’)

The “upwelling of hidden genetic contents” line in Silentium was what snapped all of this together in my head, and your comment about the Stoics goes hand-in-hand with a post I made back in January about the possible future involvement of the San’Shyuum. I very much believe that Janjur Qom is still out there.

Here you go.

Thanks so much Haruspis! I really appreciate how you’re consistently able to bring the far flung corners of the Halo universe together into one neat picture. To most of us, I think they all exist as very disperate themes. I certainly feel if I’m in a different “realm” of the Halo universe when I’m reading the Forerunner Saga as so when I’m watching Halo Legends, but your writing seems to be able to cross this boundary. You can’t be right on absolutely everything, but it makes me excited to think that 343 have in mind even a portion of what you’re saying, and from what I’ve seen with their handling of canon in recent years I wouldn’t doubt them at all.

Dope work you deserve applause.

Humanity will overcome!
