On The Endless Possibly Being Precursors

I’m being swayed more and more on the theory that The Endless are Precursors. With Hidden Xperia’s latest video on the new edition of the Halo Encyclopedia and what Joe Staten said about the dust storm looking angry in the Season 2 promotional art, I think it is very possible.

Now, I’m no lore master, but I know a good bit about the story. So for those of you that don’t know, the Precursors, in order to survive against the genocide the Forerunners were carrying out against them, they turned themselves into a sentient dust-like form. Over time this dust form got corrupted and turned them into what we know as The Flood.

Maybe I’m just reading into Joe’s statement too much, but it could be possible that the Forerunners trapped the remaining Precursors’ dust forms in the cylixes before they were corrupted. We know the Endless couldn’t be infected by the flood, and technically the Precursors couldn’t in their dust form.

We also know that the Forerunners hated them for refusing them the Mantle and would do anything to erase them, including imprisoning them without trial and deleting any records of the Precursors. Although this does beg the question, “How did Atriox and the Banished find out about the Harbinger and the Endless if that’s the case?”

Hoping we learn what Atriox’s game is that he is playing in possibly releasing the Precursors. If the Endless do end up being Precursors, I’m wondering what is stopping them from taking Humanity’s side since they were going to pass the Mantle onto them. Maybe they won’t see Humanity as worthy anymore after the Ancients lost to the Forerunners?

My head has all kind of theories on what could happen. Do you guys buy into the theory that the Endless are Precursors? If so, how do you think events will unfold once Atriox releases them?

Considering Cortana, the Monitor and Artifacts all address this race as “The Endless”, I think it pretty much rules out the possibility as them being the Precursor race themselves. If they were truly Precursors in some form, the Forerunners, Artifacts and data analyzed by Cortana would have simply mentioned them as Precursors.

There is the possibility of these Endless being “special Precursors” so much so that they earned a new title, but from the exchange between Harbinger and the Monitor, as well as Cortana’s lore drops, it’s more like the Forerunners do not hold reverence to these Endless and treated them pretty much as lesser beings.

Personally, I suspect that the Endless were reseeded Precursors, which is why they seem to possess powers that the Forerunners were afraid of and at the same time, the Forerunners do not treat them with the reverence they would have given to actual Precursors since they were the ones who seeded them.

You could say perhaps Endless are simply genetically regressed Precursors of some sort?

I definitely think the Endless are tied to the Precursors in some way, but I’m not certain yet whether or not I think they are the Precursors as they existed before the reign of the Forerunner. Given the fact that the Domain was a Precursor construct, it’s possible they may have the knowledge of the Precursors by being connected to the Domain in some way, which may make the point of pure Precursor, devolved, or reseeded merely academic if true.
