Old School Lan Possible?

Hey guys,

I’m planning on having a bunch of friends over in a few weeks to go with an old school LAN party to play Halo 1. Last time we did this in November we used original XBOX consoles because that’s what we had available to us. The problem with those is on the new TVs and larger screens, it comes with some serious lag or hesitation. It’s almost like the TV technology is so new that the old XBOX doesn’t run smoothly on it.

What we are thinking about doing is playing the MCC on XBOX One’s on new big screen TVs to be able to use the newest technology without having to lug around two old tube TVs. What I’m asking is if the possibility of creating local profiles is still there? Like in the original Halo games, everyone could create their own profile on the game, set their own sensitivity and color to be able to play. This would be crucial for communication purposes rather than having four guys running around with the names Gamertag, Gamertag(1), Gamertag(2) and Gamertag(3). That would be useless.

If this is not possible, has anyone had a LAN party on 360’s without any hiccups or lag between the consoles? I know the original game is backwards compatible on the 360 so that should work but we would prefer to use the X1.

Mostly every new TV should have a game mode to reduce input lag. its a fault of your TVs and you will have input lag with the xbox one too, if you dont change the settings.

I had 2 lan partys last year, halo 1 is best played on the old xbox. Much more easy to do all the settings and profiles and its a better Version than the PC port in MCC.

Xbox 360 doesnt handle Halo 1 to well, there is some lag sometimes, i would not play with a 360 halo 1.

sorry for my bad english.

Thanks for the input. So you’re saying that on the TV there should be a way to reduce the lag? Would you know exactly what I would be looking for?

There’s a video setting in most TV’s known as “Game Mode”. It reduces input lag but lowers video quality.

Good to know. I’ll have to check it out and give it a try. Would be great to play on two 360’s on LED/UHD TVs without any lag. Thanks for the input gentlemen!

If you’re serious about lanning Halo CE then I highly recommend that you softmod two OG xboxes and download Halo 1 final and Halo 1.5. Halo 1 final and Halo 1.5 are both modified versions of Halo 1 that are intended to help improve the lanning experience for Halo 1(make the framerate more stable and some other things). Here are a couple of links that go further into detail about Halo 1 final and Halo 1.5.

To answer your first question, I’m pretty sure you can lan Halo 1 on MCC but I think that you all have to be connected to Xbox Live and be on the same network in order for it to work. You can either have your friends use guest accounts or just create alternative XBL accounts for your friends to use. Hosting games would be just like playing custom games on XBL. Since there isn’t much of a difference between lanning MCC and playing the game online I recommend just playing custom games with your friends over Xbox live instead of lanning the game because it’s way more convenient.

To answer your second question, yes it’s possible to lan Halo CE using the xbox 360 but it isn’t ideal to do so because there are some noticeable framerate issues when playing OG Halo CE on the 360 when compared to the OG xbox. Not only that, when using a HDMI cable to play Halo 1 you will have black bars that cut out part of your screen causing your FOV to be obstructed. Also you will still have the delayed response time(input lag) issues when playing on HD TVs. I just recommend playing OG Halo CE on your OG xbox and using CRT TVs so that there’s zero input lag. Also if you’re interested in playing Halo 1 final and Halo 1.5 here are some links to some tutorials that help explain how to softmod your OG xbox.

Here’s a stream of some people lanning Halo 1 final.
