Old Man Rant

I am 43 y/o and have been playing video games since I was given an Atari 2600 as a Christmas present in 1980. Since then I have owned both PC gaming rigs and consoles and it has been really exciting to watch the growth/innovation of the technology over the past 30+ years. One of my preferred games to play is Halo b/c the learning curve isn’t too steep and I have a half dozen fossilized guys like myself (friends from HS and college spread over the country) that can usually get away from their wives and/or kids to play it together once/week. However, after playing Halo 4 for the past six months I have gotten fed up with some things and want to vent on a few topics. Here goes:

If you can’t share, don’t play team games – I play a fair amount of Big Team Slayer and it amazes me how often that players on my own team will either throw plasma grenades and/or shoot a vehicle that I or my friends got into first b/c they wanted it during the initial spawn. We then start off w/a weakened vehicle and you give the other team the advantage. How freaking stupid is that? Are parents failing that badly in explaining to their kids how sharing works and what it means to be on a team? TEAM – Together Everyone Accomplishes More. Play the FFA games like King of the Hill or Regicide if you don’t get this concept

Why cheat? – Noobs will usually cry that someone is cheating when they are getting dominated in a game, but it usually comes down to that the player just isn’t very good. However, I have seen some obvious cheating going on in Halo 4 with the most common type being the lag switching. Why even play the game if you have to cheat to do well? I just don’t understand how that is fun. I got my @$$ handed to me when I first made the switch back from PC keyboard to console controller for over a month and it was tough. But I dealt w/my craptacular playing early on and now it is more rewarding when I win and have a positive K/D

AFK – Back out of the game if you have to go do something else. It’s that simple. Otherwise you’re just giving the other team free kills.

CSR – I don’t get how this thing works at all. I had a game last night where my team won and I had 7 kills, 5 assists and 3 deaths (I know pretty lame) with a CSR of 15. That’s fine. However, there was a guy on the losing team that had 2 kills, 4 assists and 19 deaths and got a CSR of 20. How does someone with a K/D of -17 and less assists get a higher CSR?! Then on the next game I had 17 kills, 2 assists and 3 deaths and still got a CSR of 15 where one of my teammates had 6 kills, 3 deaths and 3 assists with a CSR of 16?!

Black Screen from players quitting – I freaking hate it when someone quits during a game and then we end up stuck with the game loading. I inevitably end up dead when I spawn back in. Bungie had this problem with Reach, so how is it 343 didn’t fix it for Halo 4? They spent over $100M on Halo 4 (I’m sure more than half of that was marketing) and this didn’t get prioritized? I’ve played COD and BF3, yet this seems to be the only FPS that has this issue. After generating $300M in gross sales, you’d think they could funnel a few dollars back to development to resolve this.

Thanks for reading. Now I’m going to go yell at some kids to stay off my lawn.

THIS is why people cheat, betray and otherwise act ridiculous online. As for CSR, I still don’t get how the system works, but I frankly don’t care too much about it anyway.

It’s because so many people in this world and even the Halo community stink. Selfish jerks.

CSR is always 1 game behind, there’s a good post here explaining how it works

Can’t help but agree with the rest of your post. I haven’t encountered it much myself in Halo 4, but constant team betrayal in Reach was so infuriating. Impatience IO guess, they want it and that want it now =\

Same here.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you…

Great points, but sadly these are problems that people have already been complaining about for a long time.

I know a lot of this stuff has been hashed over, but I just needed to vent. Thanks for the support everyone.

You make some very good points OP. And the ending - priceless XD

> I know a lot of this stuff has been hashed over, but I just needed to vent. Thanks for the support everyone.

And some have been solved. IE- you cannot damage team vehicles in BTB.

One the the threads that I have actually enjoyed reading. Condense and small but still with all the info that the person needs to get out.

All very good points.

Cheaters and lag are probably the two most annoying things in gaming. Team killers are pure garbage, and don’t deserve to play any team game.

Haha. Good you have still managed to keep your sense of humor though all these years. I too am an older gamer. Not as old as you but older than most kids.

At 38 I am an old codger also, and I agree with the OP.

Back when playing coop contra with my friends, we always were careful don’t to hog all of the shared credits and continues. Now when playing BTB, I am witnessing some idiot take the sniper rifle and then fly off in the Banshee…

I simply do not understand why lone wolves simply not play slayer…

just because some one on a losing team ended with a CSR of 20, doesnt mean they didnt lose CSR, they could have started at 21 or 22 and gone down. it only pairs you with similar CSR ranks, not exact.

Don’t look now but your link is broken.

Either that, or it’s just the wrong URL all-together.

Being a 47 year-old grandfather, who plays Halo and other games with my youngest child and eldest grandchildren, I too have a story similar to your OP.

Support your post I do!
