So back in 2009 I wrote a couple random little Halo fan fiction pieces as part of a back and forth pen pal kind of thing as we were just really into Halo and the backstories that you couldn’t get from the games themselves. I haven’t kept up on the Halo canon nor was I well-versed in it at the time, but I just thought I would share the first one since they have been sitting on my computer for years. Comments welcome. If anyone thinks it is cool or wants to read the other one I wrote, let me know and I’ll post it in this thread as well. Cheers!

The galaxy was under an imminent threat. The human-occupied universe was slowly being destroyed, planet by planet, by the Covenant forces. In their search for the Forerunners’ relics, which would ultimately lead them to discoveries that would allow them to embark on the Great Journey, they had begun to crush all resistance in their path. As the Prophets had discovered that the Forerunners had ancestral ties to the humans, their final solution was to destroy the race completely, lest the entire Covenant discover this heresy. For if this happened, the Prophets would lose their power and their worship of the Forerunners would be in vain. Therefore, all evidence of the humans’ ties to the Forerunners needed to be destroyed and the only way to do this was to eliminate humanity completely. An Oracle had divulged this heresy of ancestral linkage to the Prophets Truth, Mercy, and Regret, and they had decided to keep this precious and priceless piece of information to themselves in order to gain ultimate power over the Covenant. The Oracle told the Prophets that the humans were the Reclaimers, therefore abolishing the Covenant’s perceived entitlement to the Great Journey and the relics.
The Forerunners had mysteriously disappeared from the galaxy at an unknown date, leaving proof of their existence in the form of superior technology and the construction of seven Halo rings that were created to destroy an infestation known as the Flood. It seemed the only way to eradicate these zombie-like creatures was to activate the Halo rings — but activating the rings would destroy all sentient life on all galaxies, which would cause the end of all biological life for eternity.
The Flood was a common enemy of both the humans and the Covenant, in that it eradicated all life in its wake, but the Covenant and the humans were engaged in a war of their own, as well as embroiled in civil wars at the same time, the humans with the Insurrectionists and the Covenant with sometimes non-cooperating alien races, all with their own independent interests but willing to destroy the human enemy and fall in line with the Prophets in order to begin the Great Journey.
John, a chiseled mountain of a man, was dual wielding at the shooting range in civilian clothing, firing off rounds from his UNSC-issued modified Magnum pistols when he heard his name being yelled from a distance away. No normal person could have heard this, but John’s genetically enhanced ears could hear the light padding of footsteps from 100 meters away.
“Spartan! Spartan! Cease fire!”
John spent the remainder of his magazines and then released them from the chamber, letting the hot empty clips clack on the concrete ground in front of him. His pistols smoking, he turned towards the sounds of the voice as he holstered his weapons and removed his fashionable shooting glasses.
“You have a problem listening to orders, Spartan?” It was Sergeant Avery Johnson, a UNSC war hero, who had led Marines into many battles against the Covenant, and unlike most of his colleagues, had come out victorious the majority of the time. Although many men had been lost under his command, it was inevitable when facing a superior enemy, who both out-gunned and outnumbered them.
“Only when they come from a Sergeant.” The Spartan was such a hardened battle warrior that taking orders from a Sergeant, a relatively low military rank, was ludicrous. Spartans followed orders down to the letter, but normally when they received directions from high-ranking military officials. After all, they were the UNSC’s created killing machines and only hope for human survival.
