Oh intricate pulse grenade

Ok so I want to have a good discussion about the pulse grenade. I see people using frags and plasmas all the time, however the pulse grenade user is quite rare. Well I have been using pulse grenades lately and have found them to be a great grenade type! they are quite unique and require different skills than their frag/plasma counterparts to be successful with and its my hypothesis that many players are unfamiliar with this, hence their neglect. I have some pointers though that should help a lot!

So the most important thing I cant stress enough about pulses is you need to JUMP when you throw them. this is simply proper technique, exactly the same idea as when you fire a rocket launcher. They explode right away so you can take full advantage. It gives you a better angle and will make you much more successful with pulse grenades. trust me on that.

with pulse grenades the mentality of where should I place the grenade is “right at his feet”. this is the target. ill use the rocket launcher analogy again because using rockets and using pulse grenades is largely the same thing. They also work very well when you have high ground. For instance if I am on ring three on abandoned and someone is below me on that bridge connecting ring 2 to purple forest, its so easy to toss a pulse grenade right on his head. a frag in a situation similar to this is ineffective, the angle is too sharp. Not for the instantly exploding pulse however. So always be seeking high ground when running pulse grenades. Pulse grenades are at their best when you “make it rain”

Pulses are excellent at stopping chasers. more effective than either frags or plasmas. Only a fool would run through the ion field, because they take damage and if it collapses while your in it, you are going to need full shields just to barely survive. There are many other defensive potentials the pulse grenade has. I could plant one at a lift or teleport exit, throw one on my flag to defend it in CTF, you name it.

So briefly ill talk now about what some good complementary load out options are, firstly get grenadier. you get an extra pulse grenade which is big. almost a necessity when using pulses. also I highly recommend the battle rifle. when a pulse hits a target, they still have a sliver of shielding left. the battle rifle can clean them up in one burst while a carbine or DMR would need to shoot twice in the same scenario. light rifle works great too if that’s more your style.

well there you have it, I hope some of this was helpful. Use those pulse grenades, I promise they wont disappoint!

I find that they are great finishers. When their shields are out, jump and throw at their feet. When it pops, they stumble and fall over on their face. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think that the grenadier perk is sort of a waste of a slot. With Resupply you can pick everything up right off the ground. Explosives perk does nothing to the pulse so you are free to pick a different perk… I generally take Dexterity.

It is really helpfull to spawn with 2 pulse grenades.

And apparently the explosives perk does help.
I know its a suppressor vid, but just go with it. skip to 4:27

Never thought about jumping with Pulse Grenades. I’ll have to try that.

Dominion is the only gametype that I tend to want to use Pulse Grenades. For every other gametype, Frags and Plasmas tend to better suit my style.

I had no idea explosive reduced grenade damage to yourself…

The pulse grenade was the second weapon I mastered. I don’t think I jump much when I use it. I just as I normally do. It’s a good weapon to start a close quarters battle with. Good when you have low shields and you need an upper hand in combat, a chance. Good in a mêlée fight, or as a finisher. Its not a spammy soammy grenade by nature and the fact you only get one for some reason despite others being 2…

Lol, it says that pretty clearly in the in-game loadout menu:

> Alters grenade performance, increasing blast radius and decreasing grenade damage received.

You will like them better once jumping becomes a habit.

What are some things you use them for in dominion? Throw one on the conversion keyboard?

More like I shoot the guy converting, then toss one. So hilarious if timed right. The screams of rage out of their mics…
Forerunner SWAT is a good place to use them. One hit kill, and most people don’t jump.

There is no greater rage than the I almost converted but died to a pulse grenade rage that’s for sure.

It can also mean that ‘damage’ wont be similar to what normal damage is done to your enemies and yourself, but the blast radius will be expanded to compensate for reduced damage output.

Pulse grenades are annoying. Plus, I can rarely ever get a kill with them. I will be surprised if I can ever max out the pulse grenade.

I would disagree with the need for a jump or that it helps much, I mastered the grenade easily enough without the need to jump, but I do agree they are great grenades to use. I still prefer the plasma grenade though.

Are you sure people receive damage when running through the ion field though? I thought it was only if you’re in the initial expanse or final collapse of the field that you receive damage.

A decent guide. I think pulse nades are used less because they don’t out right kill people in most cases and you only start with one. Me i tend to run pulse nades on classes with automatics. For either cleaning up a kill by throwing it around their cover or to throw at a charger.

Some helpful hints that many people don’t know: Explosives effects the radius of pulse nades. Except the field isn’t visually extended it’s more an invisible field of death thing. Another tip is players will recieve most of the sapping damage as soon as it’s deployed or just at the explosion. It’s completely possible to run through with minimal damage taken if your timing is right or the user threw it improperly.

They do take damage for running through. Not very much admittedly but it is enough to deter people from wanting to do it, more importantly it slows their sprint.

I agree they are good for deterring enemies from entering an area for a second or two which can be vital at times during a match - another useful advantage to these grenades.

Nice guide by the way.

Another thing I have found about pulse grenades is that they make good screenshots. I once was killed by a knight in SpOps, but I landed on a grenade I had thrown a second before, and I watched as my body moved in slow motion through the grenade. Great statis field on the things. So besides the practical application of killing people, it has other uses.

Have you tried the jetpack with pulse grenades? It works really well. Jetpack up above their head and toss a pulse grenade down right on it. Easy clean up from there if they don’t die outright.

i like pulse grenades they are fun and different
