Official statement from Ske7ch

I think I’m just tired of watching this playbook from 343 after 10 years. I’m tired of watching them make obviously terrible decisions for what has been my main hobby for 20 years, and then never have the humility to admit they made a mistake and stop making those kinds of dumb decisions.

In this case - Halo 5 was criticized heavily for it’s lack of content at launch. Does 343 think they made a mistake releasing Halo 5 without much content? Lol nope! They just release Halo Infinite with even less content.

Fundamentally, this is a company that behaves as if they absolutely despise their core fanbase, and as if their farts smell like roses.

You’re 100% correct. I don’t think being stingy with the free players ever helps (but I could be wrong, haven’t seen the accounting statistics). I think it works better being generous to free players because the people who are going to pay for stuff are still going to pay for it whether you’re generous or not. It only helps to broaden your player base with your free offering.

I have no issues with them chasing whales, you’ll find I’m very different from others in this regard.

The problem for me is there’s a lot of things that don’t make a lick of sense.

Engagement is literally the most important thing for any multiplayer game. Just because players are new or like shiny things and events doesn’t make them any less of a fan if they keep playing and supporting the population.

The whales pay for my free maps, thank you Shamu and friends.

That’s how Apex and other games do it. Every design has to be earned for every, single, gun. It’s so dumb but then they can make you earn or buy the same pattern 30 times instead of once.

Live service doesn’t work out as being “forever”. That’s always the plan, but that’s not what happens. Garuntee Infinite lives about as long as 3 or Reach did.,

I don’t think they despise us. And even if they did I don’t care, I just want a product.

What the last decade of 343’s run tells me is the studio they created specifically for this franchise weren’t prepared for the major shift changes in the genre and industry. It’s very telling their first pitch perfect Halo was accomplished by adhering to older design pillars - after we begged them to do it.

Somebody above the departments who fully understand us is forcing baffling decisions.

Halo has the brand recognition and financial backing to make it work out, but we’ll see.

If they stick their guns to this current monetization, it will be dead by summer. Microsoft has made many failures, regardless of their financial backing. Halo is no exception.

bruh we’re being backpacked by the rich, this is the trickle-down economic theory actually working as intended lol.

I will probably still support them, but I wouldn’t consider myself a whale, I see it as I do Patreon, I pay them, they give me stuff, the business relationship works here more or less.

You mean forever in our hearts/minds?

Seriously though, Reach basically never got proper post launch support (because of Bungie’s departure) and well Halo 3 had support for like 1 or 2 years IIRC? It’ll last at least 5 if I had to guess. Most F2P games aren’t iconic franchises dude, do you think a F2P Zelda game would only be around for a couple years? oh gawd no. F2P games are pretty fickle as is their playerbases though so who knows? Maybe in 2 or 3 years paradigm shifts dramatically but honestly Halo (as a series) is just so unfettered by trends that I see it going the long haul.

That is absolutely not how Apex does it. The visual investment in Apex is per character. Getting the Midnight color for Wraith doesn’t necessarily mean you’d get it for Ash because you probably won’t play with Ash. And then the whole comparison is moot because you unlock those colors with materials you get from the battle pass and lootboxes. And they are always available, too.

Nobody in the playerbase is treating Armor Cores like different characters. Nobody. In fact a lot of people are still unsure why there’s such a thing as Armor Core distinctions (the fact it’s becoming less of a subject means 343 successfully shifted the Overton Window on that).

Back when we discovered we wouldn’t be able to freely choose our colors, and by the way everything I said in the old forum about that came to pass, we were assured it would be balanced out by - somehow - more ways to express ourselves with these coatings. Consider that they told us this knowing it was going to be more restrictive than we thought. Those Oreos with the Monarch coating? Nothing was said about it being tied to an Armor Core.

This had never been done in Halo and even if you found a game that did something like this - it’s not an example they wanna chase.

If Oddball has a 25% chance of proccing in the RNG, the chances of getting no oddball after 100 attempts can be calculated using the binomial distribution.

P = 100! / 0! / (100-0)! × 0.25^0 × (1-0.25)^(100-0)
P = 3.2×10^ -12 or about 1:3,000,000,000,000

That’s pretty much impossible if the RNG is fair.

Though at the same time people like collecting armor. I also don’t want to spend 10-20 dollars every time I want to own a piece of armor.

Once you start buying items that are worth more than the game itself there is an issue. (Note: I’m gonna say it’s 60-70 dollars (like it came with the actual full game))

Last week’s bundle $20, this weeks $20. We are now over half of the cost of the game. That’s bad.

Summary

Lol they could care less about our opinions and feedback. They hit the deadline and are getting paid big bucks to push another crappy halo. Be sure they don’t care about what you as the consumer or as a halo fan thinks. Hopefully this will be the nail on the coffin for 343 halo. What a major disservice 343 has done to the franchise throughout the years.

Ok this irritates me. So he says servers cost money…I would think paying Xbox Live was meant for paying for those servers and it wasn’t that long ago that they were going to charge double price for xbox live with F2P being paid online only and don’t even get me started on how poorly they manage the MCC servers.

The fact that there more interested in maximising profit over player ‘fun’ is depressing. I’m looking forward to the campaign but I hate what 343i have done with the progression system, the lack of content for launch. If 343i know they were going to get this attention then they should have delayed the release and actually listened to feedback then release the progression system later on when it’s ready instead of a predatory system that should not be charging people in the middle of a beta. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Serious question, how have you stuck around this long hating the 343 franchise?

For me I enjoyed H4 campaign. H5 I didn’t like too much but after updates I loved the competitive multiplayer. Halo MCC had an awful launch but it’s great to have my favourite games of all time with new content and revitalised fanbase.

Infinite is shaping up as my favourite Halo of all time so I’m very pleased with 343. Just curious as to someone who is so against their reign of Halo as to how you’re still here.

Wow… this statement is truly shocking to me. In a nutshell he is saying that 343 is absolutely in no position to develop a AAA game and a important franchise like Halo in particular. UI limitations are one reason for the lack of playlists? You gotta be kidding me. Seriously… this is the worst thing I heard for a long time.

Allthe other stuff indicates that the MP was not even near ready at the beginning of the year. Wow…

On the progression, challenging and ranking problems: you are truly telling me there was no testing, no discussion, no thoughts about it? NOW you see it’s alla big mess?

As I said, this statement is utterly disturbing for a studio withthe biggest budget and biggest manpower. Unbelievable…

There wouldn’t have been an issue with the frustrated players, IF 343i would’ve communicated stuff like that with us beforehand. If you need time to bring stuff out, take your damn time. Testing can be done in a live environment on test servers, if the devs are up for it - just like the flights. We would’ve and still would like to help at any given time to make the game better.

If you need money, we would’ve come up with a better solution - one that would’ve benefitted 343i and the players. Even a fairly-priced subscription model would’ve been possible. To be fair, Halo isn’t just any game - it’s the quintessence, the heart of Xbox. Microsoft would hold onto that gem for any price.

We love Halo, but it seems that the top-floor of 343i is a bunch of greedy folks, who wanted to bring out an unfinished game with as much content behind a paywall as possible. Don’t ignore your fanbase, try to make use of it and work with us, instead of against us.

Yeah I can appreciate that, for the collector in me I have the weekly challenges. Have done all so far but I wish they had season stuff to unlock that wasn’t tied to battle pass or weekly events.

An overall season goal would be nice. Where you can get say 100 kills with X, 50 wins of X, grapple X amount of metres ect etc and you unlock some new armour. It’s important to mix in the paid with the free as the paid supports the game but the free helps keep people playing!

The measured approach seems far more pertinent reasoning for it.
