Are there any prerequisites for books or other media to understand Silent Storm fully? I’ve read about a third of all the books released so far, but I want to read Silent Storm sooner rather than later.

No this is very much a stand alone book. You can read this and be fine.
I ordered a paperback from Amazon so it’d go on the bookshelf with my others but I’ve had no shipping notice and all the releases only ever mention the hardback. Is it actually available in paperback?

Nope, it isn’t. You don’t have to read CD to understand SS.
I finished it in one day, I only took breaks to work, sleep, and spend time with the significant other. It’s that good. A harrowing plot, solid character development, tons of cool cameos and lore details, and some of the most intense action sequences in all of Halo. I love all sorts of Halo stories, but this is the kind of grounded military sci-fi tale that is the real meat of Halo. Troy Denning and the staff at 343 have done a fantastic job with this one. It works as a stand-alone story and a gateway to all kinds of Halo fiction. I can’t recommend it enough.
It is quite good. I disagree with Denning’s descripitives on a few occasions. As an example I wouldn’t describe John as a “schoolyard bully” when he was a child. Driven? Yes. Self assured, maybe even cocky? Yes. But not a schoolyard bully.

John kind of was a schoolyard bully if you think about it. I think the reference was there solely to explain John’s growth since his introduction into the Spartan II program.

I thought about it…and I still disagree. The worst thing John did was try to win without thought to the team. That was simply a misunderstanding of the rules and consequences. What happened when John understood what Mendez was seeking? He put the Team first. That isn’t being a bully. He also teased a fellow candidate about eating leftovers. That also doesn’t amount to being a bully. Go back and read Nylund’s initial description of John as Halsey encountered him. You see a kid that physically was capable of being a bully, but he wasn’t. Winning at King of the Hill constantly and not wanting to lose made John a winner. Apparently participation trophies thankfully went away in the future or else the human race would have only been able to hurl pansies at the Covenant.

I actually received the softback copy last week so it’s out - at least in the UK. I’m about 250 pages into it so far and am enjoying.

I agree, it’s amazing. Denning has done a great job, especially writing John.

I’ve read all the previous novels and comics (apart from Legacy of Onxy, not gotten around to that one yet) but I don’t have as good memory of them all as I wish I did, so I’m wondering how well Silent Storm is jiving for the more knowledgeable readers. Particularly in concern to the Sarge’s involvement. Does that sit within the established continuity quite nicely?

There’s no strict continuity problem with Johnson being in the story. His persona has always been “badass Sargeant with loads of combat experience.” The only nitpick I have is that Halo: First Strike obviously makes no mention of the Chief and Johnson having worked together before. On the other hand, it never says that they hadn’t. Of course by Halo 2 and 3 Johnson is as close a friend that John has left besides Cortana, so it’s a retcon that ultimately works well.
