> Find. Claim. Profit. In a post-Covenant War galaxy littered with scrap, it’s the salvager’s motto—and Rion Forge certainly made her mark on the trade. All she wanted was to grow her business and continue the search for her long-lost father, but her recent discovery of a Forerunner debris field at the edge of human-occupied space has now put her squarely in the crosshairs of the Office of Naval Intelligence and the violent remains of the Covenant. Each faction has a desire to lay claim to the spoils of ancient technology, whatever the cost, sending Rion and the crew of the Ace of Spades on a perilous venture—one that unexpectedly leads them straight into danger far greater than anything they’ve ever encountered…

Wow… that was something…

And we thought it was going to be little bit eh?

It seemed like seeing an old friend again, Chakas, Spark. Out there, free. Their fates known. And the Librarian, not quite gone!

Something.

Just finished it,pretty interesting that it takes place during halo 4 while mentioning bastion and the absolute record.Really wish we get to see another living forerunner sooner rather then later

Had to wait til payday to order this, should have it Monday.

Well…didn’t see that coming. However it is safe to say we know could be an ally in halo infinite. Also I am even more sure we will see the SoF in the game or referenced.

Might even see Rion forge also

I could not put this book down! I loved smoke and shadow so I was stoked when this was announced to be a full length novel. I loved seeing the crew’s reactions to Spark showing them the past; ancient human history, the forerunner flood war. I felt though that this ended to soon. I understand that that Kelly Gay probably couldn’t devote to much time writing in a deep philosophical debate between the crew for length reasons. But outside of top brass in the UNSC not many people, if any, know the full truth. So it would’be been nice to see an extra page or two revolving around the characters unpacking and reasoning what they had just learned. What is there is great but I just wish we had a little more time with this development. Especially with the knowledge of the flood and how they literally landed on humanity’s doorstep.

I am happy though that Rion finally learned her father’s fate and that he was a hero that saved humanity. The final goodbye log from him and me choked up and almost crying behind my desk at work at his heartfelt goodbye. I was a bit taken back by her lashing out on Spark. Sure, it wasn’t cool for him to hold back that knowledge for so long but to come at him swinging? Although I can understand her emotions, I was just surprised she had that outburst. I just wasn’t expecting that to be her reaction. I did love Spark’s rebuttal to her outburst at him,and I never thought I’d say it but dang do I feel for Spark! Poor dude’s been through a lot. (P.S.Totally thought the armiger present on the cover would be LB though, boy was I shocked when I found out who it really was!)

I’m glad in the end Rion and crew are still pursuing the Spirit of Fire and I hope we get to the moment they discover them, and possibly get something about this mentioned in infinite. I can’t wait to see where the journey leads next and I hope there’s a follow up book! It’ll be interesting to see this crew handle the created, and I think with all that’s mentioned with their geas and the librarian, they’ll hold an important spot in the upcoming fight against Cortana. That being said, with the Ace’s upgrades and Spark’s know how, I predict Rion’s crew will be instrumental in helping taking down some guardian’s,and I’d be shocked if Spark himself didn’t appear in Infinite. I’d LOVE to see an interaction between him and the Chief.

This among with many of the other recent halo novels that have released have me ecstatic for the future of Halo. The storytelling has been phenomenal. Due in large part to Kelly Gay, Troy Denning, Matt Forebeck, and all of the other talented authors in charge of writing the Halo novels. I’m hopeful for Infinite and can’t wait to hear some more news. And I sincerely hope we get another novel to follow up the Ace and her crew on their journey amongst the stars.

I haven’t quite finished reading that but I’ve been greatly enjoying what I’ve gotten through so far. The ties to the Forerunner trilogy are amazing, as well as the references and Easter eggs to all the other lore like Intrepid Eye and such. Easily one of my favorite Halo novels so far.

Edit: Just finished. I am still very impressed. Definitely one of my favorites. Some very strong character development and emotional moments, especially with Chakas and all the ties to his friends from the Forerunner Saga. I do somewhat agree with another poster that more time could have been spent on some of these moments, however that would hurt the pacing some so I’m happy with the amount of time we got.

Thanks to Amazon Prime Ive been able to get caught up on all the latest Halo novels this past year most if not all read by Scott Brick. I see this one is read by Justine (sorry can’t remember last name) and the reviews are complaining about her narration.

Had anyone else listened to the audio version yet and what do you think? I ask bc the reviews that Scott Brick read say he was horrible but I think he did a fantastic job so I wanted opinions of the Halo community.

I dont do audio books so I couldn’t tell you.I find halo books to be an easy read and you dont need an audio form to become immersed

I’m really glad that discarded plot points were brought up again, Gek Lar, Requiem, Absolute Record and even Bastion being mentioned helped the novel feel more routed in the time period it was set in.

The return of Spark, The Librarian AI, Annabelle Richards and even Fireteam Apollo was a really nice surprise as well. Lets hope we don’t have to wait years for more Guilty Spark.

I listened to the audio book and it’s not Scott Brick for this one. The woman does a fantastic job as Rion and the other female characters, but her male voice feels off and her voice for certain AI characters is pretty jarring.

I based my entire spartan company story on finding the UNSC Rubicon and her crew. Was a bit discerning to find they died so fast RIP. but the return of 343 was well worth the rest of the read…if only i could find a way to forgive him for sgt jhonnson…
single tear drop

I’m about halfway through the book now and I have to say I’m rather impressed. As much as I would want SoF to appear in Infinite, I do hesitate about over covoluting the story.

Ryon Forge as a supporting character in Infinite, perhaps with the SoF being rescued in the climax as a lead in to Halo Wars 3?

Cheers,
Brad

I just wat to give a shout out to that group of burly humans and a sangheili who immediately stepped up to defend what they thought was an innocent young woman from jackal slavers. I mean that’s not really what happened, but I like those guys. Oddly wholesome

One thing I don’t understand.

Spark wanted so bad to go to Earth and find the Librarian. Any reason why he didn’t try to do that in Halo 3?! He was there!

It was more chakas that wanted to find the librarian

Pretty much. It’s worth re remembering that Spark has his memories and knowledge xompartmentalized. 343 Guilty Spark was effectively a new personality layered on top of Chakas’ personality. Getting fried by the Spartan Laser must’ve loosened things up and brought back up Chakas.

So… what in the actual wort wort.

Chakas is “alive” again and is inhabiting a new machine body. So that makes him the oldest living person in the galaxy now. A human conscience that is still sane after 100,000 years is quite impressive.

But is it explained what happened to the others?

Chakas/343 was host to dozens of ancient human geas right? So are the gone now or have they simply merged with Chakas and ceased to be individuals. I feel… well Im not sure after reading/skimming the book.

By others, do you mean Riser and Vinnerva? I got the impression they simply lived out their lives as humans do, but Spark certainly felt they could be accessed or retrieved through the Domain.

Personally, the Domain is still a confusing concept for me, and I think that’s the lore’s intent, it’s supposed to be difficult for humans to understand.

But, in regards to Chakas/Spark, I am curious if other monitors might have human origins that can be accessed and Prometheans as well.

It also seems the concept of Geas, or the memory/ghost of an ancient human is buried in people although I’m unsure how common this is supposed to be. Can those be unlocked?

Cheers,
Brad
