> Battletech (to my knowledge) has very little in the way of fleets of starships (most are just troop and dropships to get the ground forces planetside) so the UNSC would be in the position of superiority for once. Not to mention the fact that there is no unified nation in Battletech, there’s just a wide assortment of factions that fight each other.
>
> On the ground, I’d give a slight edge to Battletech simply because the UNSC doesn’t have anything on the same scale and, if my days playing MechAssault 1& 2 back in the day taught me anything, it’s that having a wide variety of units doesn’t save your ground forces from mechs.
>
> In space, UNSC every time. The UNSC is organized, unified, and has experience at fighting in space. It has a militarized navy with powerful weapons that can strike, however effectively, from extreme long range (kinetics don’t slow down in space so hello beyond line of sight MAC rounds).
>
> And who wins in space wins on the ground. Once they take orbit, if there’s not a specific thing on the planet they want, all the UNSC has to do is just pound the surface with nukes and MAC rounds from long range. Even the strongest mechs can’t survive orbital bombardment.
You aren’t wrong, most of the factions are busy fighting each other. Depending on which timeline we’re talking about, I.E. The Succession Wars, Clan Invasion, Civil War, Jihad, Dark Age, etc., they will indeed have Warships. The problem is that even at the height of say, The Star League, they had maybe about a thousand or so Warships in general. No energy shielding and the ships tend to range from 200-to-1,500 meters. They’re comparable to UNSC Warships to some degree, if only because they employ similar weapons. For example.
The UNSC Frigate, a standard Frigate from the Halo 3/Reach Era, a Charon-Class Light Frigate. What is it armed with?
Length: 490m
Width: 156m
Height: 139m
- x1 MAC
- x50 Archer Pods
- x4 50mm PDG
- x3 Nuclear Silos
Armor wise it uses 60cm of Titanium-A Battleplate. Pretty good stuff.
And that’s just on a Light Frigate. If the Frigate gets the first shot on an unprotected Covenant ship, like a Corvette, chances are that Corvette’s gonna get smashed up.
Now, lets compare it with a Frigate of comparable size. The Concordat.
Length: 485m
Width: N/A (I’m guessing comparable)
Height: N/A (I’m guessing comparable)
- x15 NAC/20s (Large cannons used for ship-to-ship combat. The number denotes the Capital Damage of the gun)
- x3 NL55s (Naval lasers used in ship-to-ship combat. The number denotes Capital Damage of the laser)
- x4 NL45s
- x32 LRM15s (Missile Launchers similar to a cruise missile or Javelin from our world. The number denotes how many are fired in a single salvo)
- x16 Large Lasers
- x32 Medium Lasers
Armor wise it uses 527.5 tons of standard armor. Standard armor is more or less Titanium with ceramic and other materials. I’d say it’s slightly better than Titanium-A given the extra layers.
Battletech Warships, and all things in Battletech, lack energy shields since they haven’t learned how to create them yet. If the Charon could fly in and surprise the Concordat, I’m pretty sure it’s MAC could take out its engines and either disable it in one or two hits, if it hit important areas. But on the other hand, the Concordat is armed to the teeth with large cannons and particularly energy weapons. Lasers that they might be, when you have several guns firing at you along with a combined output of 480 missiles coming at you every thirty seconds, I’d imagine that the Charon would be toast if it didn’t get the drop on the Concordat. Which leads me to my point.
The Battletech universe does have Warships, and scary ones at that. Maybe not scary on the level of the Covenant, but somewhere inbetween it and the UNSC. But there is something the UNSC has that the Battletech universe lacks; Numbers. The Battletech universe is split mostly into two parts; the Inner Sphere and Clan Space. The Inner Sphere lost the technology to build Warships for hundreds of years, and only got it back after the Clan Invasion in 3050. For every Concordat that’s produced for example, the UNSC has about 15 Charon’s.
If there was a battle in space between the UNSC and the Battletech universe, the UNSC would win by the fact they just have a stupid amount of ships that have the equivalent of huge Gauss Rifles built into their ships that could rip a ship apart, especially unshielded ones like the Battletech Warships.
One on One? The Battletech ships would win out about 50/50 I’d say. I’m sure even a Pocket-Warship could at least do some damage to a UNSC Frigate before popping.
