Right now I would like to point out the Reach Magnum. I would like to specifically point out how it was designed as a weapon that you can spawn with that allows you to engage and get kills with at midrange by being the same 5SK that the DMR is while still leaving you wanting something more due to it’s shallow mag and limited max ammo count.
I want you to apply this concept to H4 with the automatics.
In Reach the AR took 2/3rds to kill, pairing it with the Magnum in terms of designed limitation to foster player movement and weapon searching, but there was no upgrade for it like there was for the Magnum in the DMR. The Repeater wasn’t it since it was barely an upgrade with too many cons to go with the pros. All the while the AR still stood as an anemic peashooter that was doomed to die in it’s own range against any competent player using a mid-long range rifle like a shotgun.
To me you have one of two options 343. Reintroduce SMGs and have players start with them while greatly improving the AR’s performance and placing them around the maps. Or, keep the AR as it is on players and introduce a LMG which is a clear upgrade over the AR.
In the end the results are the same though: Create a close range automatic weapon that is more than just an anemic pea shooter and doomed to die at it’s own range against any half competent player using a mid-long range rifle like a shotgun.
I like the idea! I feel like the human automatic weapons were lacking. the SMG was awesome but only when paired up, why not bring back something like the ODST SMG but completely different? good idea! props

No. Something like the SMG which can be made into the current AR while the AR is then buffed to be the SMGs upgrade like how the DMR is an upgrade over the Magnum, or keep it as it is and add a LMG to be an upgrade over the AR.
AR needs to be beefed back up to its original CE effectiveness. I’d use a CE AR any day, it was actually a solid weapon then. Give it the 60 round mag again, make it more powerful, and make it sound scary once more.

No. BR should always win unless the person with the BR misses a headshot. THAT’S how it should be balanced. Just a slight buff in the AR
This sounds like solid reasoning to me. I would love to see the return of dual wieldable SMG’s, and something like the Halo 1 Assault Rifle to be the upgrade.
I think 343i could take notice of advantages from both the MA37 in Reach and the MA5C from Halo 3:
MA37:
-User-friendly with large aiming reticule
-Able to visibly control bloom, thus getting range for controlled bursts
-Doesn’t run out of ammo so fast
MA5C:
-Relatively fast kill time
-Good range with obvious advantage over shotgun/SMGs
While I think the advantages for the MA5C were stronger, the advantages or pros of the MA37 should be taken note of. The H3 MA5C was not very user-friendly, at least not for me. It ran out of ammo fast, the aiming reticule was almost the size of the BR’s while still not even offering half the range, and it was hard to use up close, which is why I like the MA5B and MA37. I know this was partly due to the SMGs being with the AR in the same sandbox, and they had to differentiate, but the reticule was still too small.
The AR should have both sides of these pros in some form or fashion, and then give it a deeper clip, and I think that would be the perfect AR.
This is actually a good idea, which is pretty rare at this point. I like the LMG idea I think i could really work. I’m not sure about the SMGs though as dual-wielding is not in the game.
I would love to have SMGs in Halo 4, even without dual wielding. The AR just doesn’t fit my playstyle, but SMGs decidedly do. Maybe have the silenced SMGs from ODST, as a stealth alternative to the AR.

Reason why Ars are terrible beside damage is its worthless clip in the newer games.
AR’s need to find a balance between Reach, and Halo 3… damage wise.
SMG’s would be great, if dual wield is returning… or if they amp the damage up.
LMG’s would be a perfect idea for a new weapon.

But with a 60 round mag, it may as well be a LMG. I always used it like a LMG in Halo CE, continuous fire and spraying from the hip.
