ODST Rail Shooter

I’d like to see the community response to this topic. When I first learned of Halo: ODST, I thought of playing as non-enhanced humans. This meant no shields, no flipping over Warthogs, no meleeing brutes to death, and quicker, stealth gameplay.

This led me to think of CoD 4, Ghost Recon, Deus EX, Far Cry 3, Crysis, and Team Fortress 2. I know a lot of people will say that Halo needs to stand out from FPS games like CoD through gameplay, but I think it stands out enough with just the Halo Universe in general. Halo Wars wasn’t very good in my opinion, but I wouldn’t have protested it’s creation because I wanted Halo to stand out from Star Craft. I realize this analogy isn’t perfect, but it’s the best I can come up with.

I would love to see a full game, or at least a PC mod with the Halo Universe in fast paced, “realistic”, squad based shooter. Why limit the entire Halo Universe to one game type?

It`s sounds like a good idea, I just wonder if people want that. Lots of people get tired of shooters because of them being generic. I like Halo because it stands out. It sounds like a cool idea and I would definitely buy it. It would be interesting.

I guess I’d like to hear from more people about how they feel. I definitely enjoy Halo because it’s not another modern warfare shooter. But me personally think a big part of it has to do with the enemies, environment, and the battle situations; not just the shields, strength, and aimer. Having to stealthy avoid a single Elite as a non-enhanced human, tactically ordering a squad of teammates around a platoon of Grunts and Jackals, running out to a D-Day Halo style battlefield knowing that you die quickly, and covertly taking out high profile targets I think could definitely be a fun change up.

Bungie already gave 343i and Ensemble a chance to make their own Halo game. Why not snag up and give the former Infinity Ward or BioWare team a chance? Or how about give some extremely dedicated fans to build their own independent games?

Again, I’d like to hear more opinions on this specific suggestion.

If so I don’t want 343 to throw in things that aren’t cannon. I am a little worried about that.

I wouldn’t mind a third person shooter ODST game akin to the more recent Ghost Recon games.

I think it’d be pretty cool, since those games don’t add melee into the mix (aside from Future Soldier, but that type of melee would be fun for ODSTs to use).

A rail shooter might be pretty neat, but I’d like to see it in an arcade.

I personally believe that there are dedicated fans in all walks of life that could potentially come up with some really fresh & quality Halo fanon better than some of Bungie and 343i’s current ideas. But since there’s no way to control it, it could very easily get out of hand. Hmmm.

If I’m fully informed, an independent dev could either remake a story from the entire Halo Universe(including Eric Nylund’s stories), or get an official blessing for an idea by 343i or Bungie. I think that is more than reasonable, and would agree to your terms.

Ka Five:

I’m on the fence on which I’d like to see first. I really think the Halo Uni could provide some fresh aspects to a realistic rail shooter. Although, I may honestly be completely turned off by any type of rail shooters by the time the game launched. Which is why I think, with an existing engine, this would be best left in the hands of the fans/indie devs.

The squad based/3rd person shooter genre definitely has room for a Halo game, but would need the most attention. This type of game, for me, would need to stay as “low key” as possible. When I say that, I mean a single Grunt should be difficult to kill. Small firefights would require clever tactics, and some situations would demand stealth, less you alert an entire armada that you wouldn’t stand a chance against. You could almost browse Army, Air Force, and Marine briefings on current conflicts, and reenact them. At times it would almost borderline the ridiculous, but would always snap back to reality, mostly to avoid merging into Gears of War territory.

Since the 3rd person tactical shooter doesn’t have that large of a fan base, relatively speaking, it would need to stay fairly low budget with tapered expectations, as to avoid ruining these “Halo experiments.” I would hate to see a Peter Jackson stunt and demand a budget that rivals current blockbusters.

On a mostly unrelated subject, I had a lot of fun with Uncharted 3. I can’t imagine a Halo game in that style, but that doesn’t mean someone else can’t.

Bungie had some some interesting ideas along with 343 but I wasn’t to happy how fast the didact was introduced. It was neat though that john got a big physical upgrade to keep him alive. I was reading some fan base material written by DeceptionCobra. He had a very interesting opening for a Halo 5 prologue that was fan written. It stayed true and cannon even though it was fan written. I hope 343 contiues to release more books because ivé enjoyed thoughs more then the game title story wise.

I’ll most certainly take a look at DeceptionCobra’s stuff. I’ve enjoyed the storyline in the books much more than the games since Eric Nylunds first book. (Even William C. Dietz book had some good parts)

But it seems they only pick the grandest storylines of the grandest events in the Halo Universe for the games, with the exception of ODST. This is proof that a game can be built around a fairly small storyline.

I think 343i and Bungie would be stretching themselves thin trying to come up with every square inch of the Halo Universe by themselves. There’s a large pool of talent from fans who would be honored to have their storylines used. They could also be paid humbly and be happy, rather than a million dollar “pro author.”

I agree 343 said it them selves we are fans just like you but it doesn’t always seem like they act like it at times. Fan input is VERY important and if ideas are posted and regulated right we can help expand and create a positive Halo universe.

I was a little disapointed that 343i skipped the Multiplayer beta phase.

But what can we say? I have seen many good ideas on these forums alone, so if 343i wanted them, they are here. Almost every fan would like to see at least a few of the best fan ideas implemented.

But we digress. What would it take for Halo to branch out into another gaming genre? Halo Wars didn’t sell well at all, and some wouldn’t risk making another shooter, whether it be rail shooter or 3rd person tactical shooters.

I have some rendering skills, and would gladly lend a hand to an independent developer making a Halo game that I would like to see.

I think it would be neat if fans with the heavy skills created a 3rd party halo title. I know there are the very few that have tried but didn’t have money or funds/time. The most relative thing I’ve seen would be the work on Halo PC CE. Very impressive additions done by a community that evolves and tests ideas. I know 343 doesn’t have time for that so perhaps they allowed a PC group from the community to start seeding ideas, maybe that can help. I don’t render or create video games but I have 3 1/2 years as a QA software tester.

I think Halo is one of the few properties that has the potential to branch out into a number of different genres. Survival horror, stealth, RTS, hack and slash, TPS, flight simulator. These are just the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. Each one would be perfect for telling different stories in the Halo universe.

eben gibon king;

Yes! Thank you. A survival horror or hack and slash are neat. Resident Evil 6 was such a huge disappointment for me, I started looking for different franchises in the genre. A grittier, darker Halo with a human, small corridors, limited ammo, and the flood could easily be awesome.

An arcade hack and slash(thinking Castle Crashers) could do real well with just Halo characters.

A flight simulator is way over due. (thinking Star Fox)

Not taking away from Halo’s original FPS series, but I really believe there’s way more potential in the expanding universe. Thanks for the response.
