ODST/Halo Evolutions crossover?

Check out this paragraph from the Rookie’s entry in the Universe section:

> Just weeks after the tragedy of New Jerusalem, he dropped near the city of Mount Haven with orders to defend the transport of a Forerunner artifact. Once groundside, he discovered an injured soldier who’d been shot down by rogue ODSTs. The injured soldier warned the Rookie of his intention to detonate a nuclear missile to destroy both the rogue ODSTs and Covenant forces approaching the crash site. The Rookie escaped the blast zone and hailed a Pelican for pickup. He was then informed that all UNSC forces were retreating to Earth following the Covenant glassing of Reach.

The Rookie from H3:ODST is the young ODST in Dirt, the short story in Halo Evolutions? I had no idea! That is some impressive crossover work… kudos to the universe team for that clever bit of lore building and backstory for the Rookie.
I honestly had no idea this was a thing, though apparently it’s been in the lore a while now. Thanks for putting that out on Waypoint, Grim! Always good to learn tidbits like this!

Known this for awhile. He is even adress as the rookie in the story. Would love to get some more backstory on him,

it was deffinetily him, without any doubt, i made the connection the first time i read it.

Something new was the original Mission. He has to defend the transport of a Forerunner Artifact. What this is, is a mystery

I always figured as such, but it is still cool confirmation. Now if only he’ll get a name. Buck calls him James evidently during the Oliphant run, so that is a start.

343i should seriously stop adding location after location to repel New Mombasa as the epicentre of the events on Earth…
A couple of locations sprung up in the story that are so useless and have no place in the story, but is being given such a misplaced importance.

Tobias S. Buckell said as much on Blogspot years ago:

> The novella was a set up as a classical tragedy (everyone who’s a major character dies except for the guy who frames the story, who is the recruit from ODST, I was trying to write this to flesh him out a bit for fans).

It’s still nice to get official confirmation from 343, though.

Agreed.

Not everyone was lucky enough to fight in the East African theatre during the invasion of Earth. To focus on this battle or that battle with more importance than the other discredits the sacrifices, the losses, and the triumphs of those who fought elsewhere. Whether it be at Havana, Mount Erebus, Pawa, Sydney, Cleveland, or high above our cradle world, all of them deserve to have their story told no matter how insignificant it may seem. Absolutely none of them have detracted from each other as the final, ultimate clash between Humanity and the Covenant.

Cool info. Little more story to him.
