But if you watch at around 1:21, the player throws the oddball to an enemy player, and because of the auto-pick up, he grabs it. He gets blown away by the incineration cannon pretty quickly, but if he hadn’t, the player who threw the ball would have a significant time advantage on him, because you obviously can’t shoot with the oddball. I’m sure I’m not the only one who can see this being abused?

Edit: Changed the title, because you guys convinced me otherwise pretty quickly.

I guess by definition it could be called an exploit because it is exploiting the fact that the oddball is now auto-pickup, and you can throw it. If you consider it a new tactic, that’s cool I guess. But I’m on the side of the fence that this is a little underhanded.

That’s a risk you are taking when you try the tactic.

Yes this is quite cool actually. It’s a risky tactic.
Although, I suppose it’s not a bad thing. If they are able to get away, you’re right, you just gave away the oddball. I suppose we just swapped the tactical gameplay of CTF to Oddball.

Exploit? Nah.
Risky tactic? You bet your sweet -Yoink-.
It is going to have to take some skill to pull off this. Miss the throw and you are DED.
Trying to think of what gametype this was doable in Reach, but I think boom ball was the only mode with auto pick up. Needless to say, this is nothing new.
Edit: after seeing the clip it wouldn’t have made a difference as the guy with the oddball didn’t even have the cannon -.- The guy covering him did…
You have 2 balls, you throw one high in the air, as your opponent goes to grab it you pelt them with your secondary.
This is a great strategy and will be fun to play with in oddball.
It makes AR chargers and sprayers have to be ready to duck or dodge if the oddball carrier swiftly turns around and throws it at you. You can no longer expect to be able to charge spraying without fear of the oddball carrier being able to pull a fast one on you.

Hell, this can work great against anyone with a close rage weapon. Imagine going in for a easy shotgun kill from the carrier and than Blam! Your weapon is gone and the carrier has a nice little rocket surprise.
A quote from one of the worst characters of all time perfectly describes this tactic:
“Heavy risk, but the priiiiiize”
I’m torn between it being a tactic and an exploit though. It happened in CE but it’s a lot easier now.
I’ll go with it being a tactic. It’d only be effective in tight quarters, and while at that particular moment, the victim cannot do anything about it…the marker is above the carrier’s head. A smart player will think; “If I go in there, he could catch trap me.”
Maybe nerf the auto pick up range a bit. That’s it.
