So the community update posted yesterday has revealed that the long-waited Oddball game mode will be limited to custom games, and will NOT feature in matchmaking. Personally I’m disappointed as I’d been looking forward to it and I think it’d finally mean there’s enough game modes (3) to create a dedicated Team Objective playlist (to replace Team Arena), or otherwise just be added to Team Arena to increase variety.
However, I am pleased that they’re not making a ‘ball modes’ playlist for Griffball/oddball/assault which I know quite a few people had expected, because I personally don’t think they’d all fit together and I believe Oddball fits in more with the other objective game types.
Poll options:
Yes - add it to Team Arena - added alongside Capture the Flag, Strongholds and Team Slayer
Yes - add it to Team Objective (new) with CTF & SH - new ranked playlist, Team Objective, added to feature Oddball, Capture the Flag and Strongholds (and hopefully KOTH in future?)
Yes - dedicated Oddball playlist - self-explanatory; but would you like it ranked or unranked?
No - leave it for custom games only - self-explanatory
They should have added a dedicated model for it (Oddball isn’t Odd if it’s just a ball) and add it into matchmaking… We’re like pulling teeth to have 343i bring back the fun, less competitive aspects of Halo.

Personally I think oddball is still quite competitive, but I agree without a doubt it should be in matchmaking.
They should certainly add it to an Objective playlist with Strongholds, CTF, and (hopefully) assault. Team Arena should only be updated with whatever the HCS tournament gametypes will be, so after Oddball and Assault have been tested in Team Objective on all of the maps and players have given feedback about which ones work best, then add those to Team Arena. 343 should essentially use Team Slayer and Team Objective to try out maps and gametypes and see the competitive merit they have and regularly ask for feedback on all of the different halo community sites (waypoint, r/halo, beyond, etc.)
Just as an example: Team Slayer on Overgrowth and Riptide, in my opinion, do not work, based on my having played them in the Team Slayer playlist. If enough people agree with that feedback, they should not consider putting Slayer on Overgrowth and Riptide in Team Arena. I have not played any Objective gametypes on those maps so I cannot have an opinion on how they play for CTF, Strongholds, Assault, and Oddball yet.
Wait are you guys serious? i thought oddball would be in the matchmaking, why wouldnt it? I don’t have IRL friends that play halo 5 anymore because they all hate it so i can only play matchmaking, no custom games for me. Tf is wrong with 343, can they do anything right?

I personally think strongholds works well on both overgrowth and riptide. However as they’re not symmetrical there’s no CTF available. As for Oddball, it doesn’t really need a symmetrical map, so it could potentially work on all maps.

So true… I thought now that they’d finally made ball modes we’d be able to actually play it… but no, only if we go in to a custom game. Oddball is the perfect competitive gamemode for a ranked matchmaking experience imo.
I feel like they should add it into an objective playlist, but, add it into Arena as long as it plays nicely after a few weeks of watching the statistics on it.
Absolutely. I don’t see why it shouldn’t be in Team Arena. Oddball is one of the most underrated competitive gametypes, imo. Requires lots of teamwork and communication. Plus the objective is dynamic. Makes for interesting gameplay.

That’s a bit of a disappointment, seems like more objective based games in matchmaking would help Halo 5’s population.
I’m fairly certain that Team Arena is exactly like an objective playlist, but anyway I do think they need more gametypes in the playlist, like oddball, regicide and a revamped juggernaut mode!
