Odd Ball Ranked: No one wants to play right

I am Diamond 2 right now and have been seeing this since I started playing ranked.

Everyone wants to shoot their gun and no one wants to pick up the ball.

I understand this might be part of testing objective based game modes but right now it’s sooo painful. Rather than trying to herd cats just give people want they want and more slayer and king of the kill (maybe ctf but less frequently)

I wish you could single meele kill with the oddball especially vs Battle rifles but I understand how it encourages bunkering game play mechanics etc. However, with nades and rifles you should be able to coordinatedly take out the oddball holder.

Anyway, people don’t get that to win oddball you have to THROW YOURSELF AT THE BALL! (with a little game play sense…)

ANY chance you have to pick it up you need to take it and pick up that ball. Those extra few seconds will add up and can net you a win, but all too often I see people standing over the ball chasing kills and I think as simple as oddball seems behaviourly or maybe even complexity-wise… It’s too much for most people to grasp.

Ranked also doesn’t reward you for actually playing the objectives in terms of score etc nearly enough but that’s a different topic.

Anyway I would recommend removing oddball from the rotation for now…

Maybe if the skull was insta kill again people may want to pick it up maybe

It’s really annoying. I end up having to control the oddball 90% of the time in those games otherwise I can toss any chance of winning out the window.

I also agree about the scoring thing. Playing objective does not get you nearly enough vs getting kills, which discourages people from playing the objective in objective modes :woman_facepalming:

I agree, I believe making it a one hit kill will give people the incentive to actually pick it up. Usually you are getting shot at on your way to pick it up, so by then you have lost your shields or most of them, therefore the one hit kill with it would be better imo

There may be some challenge farming going on as well?
I had an oddball game where the enemy racked up over 75 total kills, and our team got to maybe 30 or 40 in total, yet we won.

They barely touched the ball and instead went for weapon kills , beatdowns and whatnot

I also just had a match where despite our team WINNING, because I carried the ball and was throwing myself at it in order to do it… I had a lot of deaths and actually LOST rank for a win… I had most carry time by far.

Stop using KDR to try and justify rank if you want us to play objectives. This is just silly.

Nothing feels worse than doing what the game mode is asking me to do and being punished for it.

To be fair it always used to be a one hit kill from what I remember.

Don’t get me wrong I mess so many people up with the rapid double tap! People underestimate how aggressive you can be with the ball! But again… they make you move slower with the ball as well which is a little bit much…

Yeah I just got out of a game of oddball, and noticed more of what all is going on

I also hate that it makes you win two rounds. Imo I liked the old way of just one set time. If you’re team has a great set up, you deserve to win. The rounds don’t feel right to me.

That’s interesting.
Reach’s ranked was based on individual score when it released. Not a popular list.
Then months later they changed it to be W/L only to determine skill rank.

But, people asked to be individually ranked before when they felt cheated for a rank after not partying up with others and in turn getting randoms who would throw the match in either direction.

Petition to give the ball and flag the BXB.

This happens to me constantly and it’s infuriating. Over 75% of the ranked Oddball games I’ve won would’ve been lost if I didn’t keep hurling myself at the Oddball for any chance to grab it due to my horrid teammates. They seriously need to fix the rank progression weighting when it comes to playing objective. Objective play should be miles more important when giving you ranking experience compared to a players K/D. Hope we see a fix for this.

The lack of a dedicated Slayer playlist for both social and ranked seems like an egregious omission. I understand why 343 would want it to just be a grab-bag at this point for testing purposes, but people ignoring the objective in those game types not only ruins the game for everyone, but undermines testing because people aren’t even playing the game types as they were designed because they don’t want to play those modes. That and people quitting immediately if it’s not Slayer.

This isn’t testing lol, people seem confused by the “beta” name. 343 said this is the launch content. These are the full game’s modes, this isn’t a test.

You’re literally just looking for excusing to whine. If you think the game isn’t going to have a dedicated Slayer playlist, then you should probably wear a helmet at all times.

The fact there isn’t a Slayer Playlist to start is already reason enough to complain imo.

Step 1: Go to the café in the corner.
Step B: Hide behind the counter (melee the boxes to flex your alpha brain)
Step 3: Crouch and strafe like you have rabies.
Step 4: Drop the ball when someone comes in and obliterate their existence.
Step 5: Pick the ball back up and restart the cycle.
Step Jeff: Wait for Jeff to tell you you’re “Straight Ballin”

HCS is objective structured, so that’s probably why they don’t have an endless TDM list.

That still doesn’t excuse the lack of a dedicated Slayer Playlist, something that has been present in every game since H2.

Just all the more reason to have an HCS playlist.

I find it annoying how often players pick up the ball and don’t fulfill the primary objective which is to retain number control and protect the setup. Holding the ball for 3 seconds and not helping your team, losing setup, will probably cost the team far more seconds that game. Secure the setup, win your fights, drop the ball if you need to assist, hold the ball when it is SAFE to do so. Be prepared to put yourself and the ball into a less secure position if your team are losing their individual fights to make it harder for the enemy team to take control.

People also don’t pick up the ball when they should, which can also be frustrating but I see far more of the above than this. Usually I am on comms calling out even if I’m the only one doing it and if I tell someone to pick up the ball they usually do which tells me they may be less aware of the situation instead of just being negligent to the objective. Everyone has a different degree of knowledge so you have to play around that sometimes. Some people just play objective like kills don’t matter, but they matter immensely, it’s just the timing of those kills that’s more important than in Slayer.
