Objective gametypes. Is there a reason to try and win?

I was playing some BTB solo tonight and I was up against two parties; one of six and another of two. The gametype was CTF on Utopie. Straight off the bat, we were dominated. My early attempts to destroy the Banshee before the other team got it failed, and soon enough we found ourselves being spawn killed.

The next part is what surprised me. As I was defending my flag (I literally didn’t leave my team’s half of the map all match) several of my teammates broke out of the trap and managed to capture two flags. With my defending, the other team could only capture one. Oh, and I managed to go +26 while my teammates on average went -20.

It begs the question: Does winning in Reach seriously mean so little so that it’s better or more beneficial to just spawn kill? I’m sure if the other side really wanted to, they could’ve easily broken through all of our defenses and scored a flag or two to win.

This has happened a few times. Parties don’t bother about winning but rather try and spawn kill during objective matches. From what I’ve experienced, I think it would be beneficial for 343i to add some kind of reward for winning. In Halo 3 we got EXP for every match we won; in Reach, you get credits regardless of what you’re doing - so winning has less of an appeal.

Basically there’s no incentive to win in Reach, but there’s plenty of incentive to spawnkill. I play to win, but the majority choose to kill -Yoink!- because they’re rewarded for doing so.

Apparently Objective is meaningless to most Reach players…

I like playing Objective and was playing some the other day thinking, wow this is easy, but it turned out the only reason it was easy is because NO ONE was concerned w/the Bomb or the Flag and just were spawn killing and slaying randomly…

…oh well…at least we won all of our games… but it just isn’t as fun when no one is playing right…

yea, the teams im on in objective games are usually too busy getting kills, while our team is being dominated objective wise, that’s usually why I stick to defending the objective regardless.

I don’t farm kills in Objective games until the lead has been thoroughly secured (Usually by capping 2 flags, and denying the other team any). But I don’t Spawn kill, I just take advantage of the other team’s obsession with the Objective and use it against them to get uncontested kills.

In Multi-Team or Rumble Pit, though, if KotH or the like come up, I don’t bother winning. I just farm. Sometimes in Multi we have one player at a time focus on hill time while the other two kill everyone else. It gives us relatively uncontested wins AND kills.

that happened to you because u have no friends if u had friend s u had a team of 8 and win the game while spawn killing the other team =), u played solo on a playlist of 8v8 and got to this conclusion = so sad

With the matchmaking as bad as it is TO is nothing but a killing field for me. I don’t want to walk all over my opponent but if the game is letting me spawn kill and abuse Evade/DMR so be it!

Its up to 343i to balance game types and make TO a fun place to be.

The scenario you described happens often in Halos to myself. Since Halo2, through Halo3 and into Reach. Myself being the lone gunman on a team of uncoordinated and unaware individuals (even if they show up as a team) versus a team of coordinated pairs and full parties who are looking to use the full 15min against a team just like mine. And sometimes the team gets a lucky score/win because the enemy is coming after me and not my team

I prefer to be attacking the enemy and retrieving/planting the objective. I do find that if I can’t win the overall match due to circumstances outside of my control, and if I haven’t been pushed too far that day yet, I will create mini-goals of my own to achieve.
Often I will make my base a living hell to enter for the enemy. Cluttering, scattering and piling the weapons and vehicles around to increase the chances of funneling the enemy through my means.

On a philosophical note:
I do respect teams that know they are going to win and don’t drag out the match for stats. It shows respect for the loosing team by giving them a quick end. It also shows the will to win. The speed and efficiency for the next opponent speaks volumes.

Is there a reason to try and win in any Social Playlist?

That’s the question you should be asking yourself and the answer is NO.

That’s not very competitive now is it?

No.
Steamrolling BKs and making them rage is way more fun.

I only use obj to warmup since its mostly DMR starts, i still do the objective of course.

TO and Throwback from Halo 3 was amazing, but severely damaged my ranked KD/R since the ones that tried to protect their K/D ended up losing, or in the case of throwback, booted half the team.

Legit 48 in that playlist, loved every single second of it <3

Gotta love a thread where someone has to link to their game history, like we haven’t seen that before.

ADAPT! :stuck_out_tongue: <3

Some people are bothered by the strangest things… :open_mouth:

There’s no reason at all to win the game quickly or to go for the objective after you scored the first point.

Just looked at a vid of MW3 the other day, and you get XP for beeing an objective player, that should definitely be in Halo 4 also.

Objective in Reach is a joke.

You should get 10x more cR or EXP in Halo 4 for playing objective the way it’s meant to be played.

CoD’s xp system is beating Halo…

I will never acknowledge Reach’s playlists as competitive, Arena which is the most competitive playlist is a joke and worse than 90% of the ranked Halo 3 playlists.

Reach just isn’t a good competitive game hence why some many people call it Reach.

CoD’s XP system is undeniably good. It rewards you for kills, completing objectives, etc. While it is by no means a measure of individual skill, it is a good reward system.

It has already, but Halo 4 could change that.

There needs to be some kind of reward for going for the objective, and a bigger one for getting the point.

There also needs to be a reward only for winning the game, not just cR for both sides, because then winning wouldn’t matter.

Halo 3 had it right (even in social), but to make it even better, there needs to be a reward (not just medals) for beeing a true objective player.
