Before I say Anything, I want to make it clear, that I think 343i is doing a great job on Halo 4 so far, the graphics in the campaign demo were great! However there are a few graphical issues in Halo 4 that I want to point out.

I played the Multiplayer Demo of Halo 4 at FanExpo (Comic con in Canada). And the Graphics were pretty good, lighting especially. I played on Longbow and there were a few bad graphical moments. The snow was just a mound of white stuff, no details at all. In Halo 3 you could see all the little specs of snow on the ground, and when you walked on snow it left footprints. But in Halo 4, a game coming out 4 years after Halo 3, the snow looked worse than Halo 3. No footprints, and no details in the snow. Also the water in Longbow looked bad, Halo Anniversary had better water graphics. And the fire effects in the game looked worse than Reach as well.

Halo 4 is the newest game in the franchise, it is an expectation for it to have better graphics than it’s predecessors in every way. But some things in Halo 3 and Reach have much more detail, and better textures than Halo 4.

Take a look at the comparison between the Reach DMR and the Halo 4 DMR, I find it odd that the Reach DMR has alot more detail and better textures:

Another upsetting thing is that, Halo 3’s 5 year old now graphics are much better than Halo 4’s modern snow graphics:

I am not saying Halo 4 has bad Graphics, maybe the final graphics will be better, because I only saw the E3 Build. But the final graphics should look better than Halo 3
and Reach. It’s an expectation.

Well it’s still a work in progress, they might fix that. Plus it’s just snow, it’s not like it’s a core part of the gameplay like weapons or something. The weapons almost look the same in the link though, and I don’t think that’s what the gun actually looks like in game. (the reach DMR)

Hmm wonder if they’ll say anything about it.

I think the reach one is a drawing.

You have already answered your own concerns. You played the demo and not the final product.

I’m going to assume that the E3 build hasn’t been fully polished yet.

i kinda prefer halo 4’s graphics compared to reach

I am not one to care to much on graphics but mainly style of the art in the game. But I still play Halo 3 and not all is perfect in the graphics department there, and with reach it can be even worse, I mean look at the trees.

It’s a ludicrous expectation. Halo 3 and Halo 4 are being made from the same console; there’s just not a lot of expansion to be had here. Halo: Reach was higher resolution at a considerable cost (the draw distance was affected, and they had to use a cheat that was serviceable if ugly). If Halo 4 is attempting to claim to be even more polished than Reach, that means there is almost certainly something sacrificed.

I’m not bothered if Halo 4 doesn’t improve on the Haloverse graphically. This is the third (technically fourth) installment on the Xbox 360. Come next generation I’ll definitely expect more, but not now.

That is a upscaled picture.

Just give me my WATER!

I’m sorry but the water in Halo: Reach to me was a downgrade in terms of interactions compared to Halo 3. I know game companies have to make sacrifices and compromises, but not my precious water. D:

Just compare this multiplayer trailer’s water to the actual Powerhouse map we have now, it’s a clear downgrade. :frowning:

I am picky! :stuck_out_tongue:

The Reach DMR looks more detailed because Bungie was going for a more “gritty” look for Reach. Halo 4 is more in line with the original trilogy’s art direction. Halo 4 is graphically superior, but follows a different aesthetic.

It’s been explained that the playable Halo 4 releases so far have been unfinished, unpolished seems to describe it well.

All games go through this: get the game working, make it look fundamentally like the game you want… Fix everything that doing that broke, make the game look like you want it to again… fix everything that that broke. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Either way, its a newer game, It should not look worse than previous installments.

I prefer Halo 4’s artstyle to Reach’s but Reach seems to have better textures.

That was the best thing about Halo Reach’s Spartan models. I don’t particularly like these colourful toys we have now like games before Reach.

Also, I agree OP. The fire effects on the Halo 4 warthog are TERRIBLE compared to Reach’s and the same with the snow in comparison to Halo 3’s snow. I hope that was just the E3 build…

I wasn’t really noting a preference for one or the other, just pointing out that Graphics and Aesthetics are not the same thing.

You’re saying that a finished game has better textures than builds from a 6 months pre-release game.

We don’t have the required data to make a judgement on something like graphics quality just yet.

Well if there is a level in Halo 4 that is a snowy one (like Assault on the Control room) and the whole level is covered in snow, it would be prety lame for the ground to be just a white mound with no detail whatsoever. And they should take the time to put detail into everything, this game is supposed to push the xbox to the max, There should be detail in almost everything. And it shouldn’t look worse than Halo 3.
