And the shield is a deterrent to competitive and casual play… how exactly? I for one can’t wait for the next iteration of storm the keep and sword duels.

Halo has always had a riot shield-esque feature. The only difference now is that people can now use it.

Little late to that party buddy 
So what? The only real thing it has in common is that it can block bullets, you can’t melee with it ala CoD or place it in the ground as mobile cover ala Gears of War. Fans have been waiting shields like that for years anyway.
