Novels focusing more on UNSC Army and Air Force...

I feel that there should be at least 2 novels with a focus on characters that serve in the UNSC Army and Air Force to fill in historical gaps throughout the history of Halo. We should have a clearer picture of Army units conducting operations against insurrections and the Covenant with support by a number of Air Force assets. Doing so would add more canon units to the Halo lore along with new interesting characters. We could have stories featuring UNSC Army troopers becoming ODST operators. We could actually have a novel about James Ackerson’s career in the Army and ONI prior to Halo: Fall of Reach where they could say he served in SPECWARCOM (along with Holland) and then ONI. There is an opportunity to expand more on the rebellion and write stories that feature UNSC Army special operations troops hunting down rebel leaders and being assigned to naval ships to carry out missions

We have simply had more than enough novels about Spartans and Marines. Reach opened the door for new factions and it is time to tell their stories and add it to Halo canon. I got plenty of ideas for short stories, but I’m not adding them to the Fandom sites on the net. I would gladly write some stories exploring these organizations for canon purposes. Hopefully, we will see some works get put out there.

Sure, I’d love to see more of the universe fleshed out. There definitely is a greater emphasis on the Navy and Marines due to their military roles as expeditionary forces, but the Army and the Air Force certainly played big roles in defensive actions throughout the war. An Army soldier’s perspective on the Battle of Earth would be quite interesting. Same goes for just about any of the colonies that fell to the Covenant.

To be fair though, the Army got an entire game since Noble Team fell under the direction of the Army. But since they are Spartans I understand why you want more stories about the Army that don’t necessarily revolve around Spartans.

Well, I don’t think they got a full game at all. They got introduced in Halo Reach, but never were fully fleshed out like the Navy and Marines in past games. The Army has conducted numerous operations in space during the conflict, so planetary defense isn’t their only capability (They were on the Spirit of Fire and Infinity). The Army has to be part of invasion forces (which is totally different from doing expeditionary operations) in order to seize and occupy territory with large number of forces, no way are they going in behind the Marines (doesn’t happen now and never will be that way). The Army should be part of nearly every conflict that involves the insurrections since they handle planetary defense and perform expeditionary operations with the Navy and Marines (which is already canon) when fighting the Covenant.

I get that all the focus was on the Marines and Navy early in the Halo franchise and that was fine. Now that we know that the Army and Air Force existed the whole time, we need books and comics to expand on them which would enhance the Halo universe. The UNSC Army aren’t lesser warriors compared to the UNSC Marine Corps. They simply have a different mission, but each can be force multipliers when together. The ODST is pretty much Delta Force in the Halo universe. They recruit from all services, but fall under the Marine Corps (Delta Force is under the Army), so the door is wide open to have stories where a character started out in the Army (or Air Force) and then joined the ODST.

There is so much uncharted territory here that 343 hasn’t touched and they should starting digging in it soon.

I personally want a story or it can even be a short story of those longsword pilots who came in and blew a hole in the CAS-Assault Carrier for the Master Chief to give the Covenant back there bomb. They were the true MVP’s in that moment even though they were probably shot down by the assault carriers pulse lasers.

RIP Longsword Pilots 2004-2007.

That’s the idea. They have so many great moments in the Halo universe that the community remembers in games or other books. They could write a story about a young man or woman whose family was deeply involved in the insurrection, but later became a Longsword Pilot that actually opened the way for Master Chief. There are so many stories that could be told from existing material that could become canon for the franchise.

That’s the beauty of a franchise like Halo. With how detailed and far reaching the lore is, we could have endless short stories, novels, comics, and games about all aspects of the universe. I’d like to see a third book released by 343 that is a collection of short stories. Evolutions and Fractures were great books imo, and they were a great way to test new story ideas and see which ones were interesting enough to warrant full novels.

I’d kill for a Stackpole X-Wing style novel about a UNSC Air Force unit fighting through the Covenant War.
Or some Ace Combat style stuff.

With a focus on lesser known branches and units, it would be outstanding.

Lore novice here. Isn’t Sergeant Johnson a member of the Army? Just guessing based on his rank - I don’t think Sergeant Major is a navy pay grade.

You do know there’s a branch of the military called the Marines right? Unless you were under the impression that they were part of the Army/Navy, which would piss off a lot of veterans.

No. He was UNSC Marine Corps, Orion Project, and NAVSPECWAR. I assumed that Johnson was once an ODST since he had HEV orbital drop training, but he was assigned to NAVSPECWAR after Orion, so it didn’t mean he served with them.

Oh right of course, thank you. I got confused since both the Army and Marines have the Sergeant Major pay grade.

Are you a veteran?

Johnson actually wasn’t an ODST. He received his drop rating courtesy of the Orion Program, which is why he is able to use a SOEIV while not being an ODST.

Yeah, I pretty much said that.

Currently an active reservist in my nation’s military (Not US).

These are very interesting ideas. I’d like to see a short story from the perspective of a civilian during the Created’s occupation of Earth.

Something told me to pull out Contact Harvest and read the prologue. In it, it describes Johnson’s uniform which was charcoal fatigues and matte-black impact plating and that his helmet had a silver mirrored visor that completely obscured his face. He and the other Marines were carrying M7 sub-machine guns which is normally carried by ODST and other special warfare troops. The year was 2524, so it was after the Orion Project was shut down and all the operators were sent to UNSC special warfare units, including ODST (which was modeled off of Orion). They never stated outright that Johnson was an ODST, but when you read Contact Harvest, it sure sounds like he was one during Operation TREBUCHET.

And let’s not ask people about their personal lives.

Definitely one about the UNSC navy and its ship and crew through the war. The close calls, ground engagements, few victories and all of their lives in between it all.
