This is just a standard marketing ploy to get you and me to spend more money than we otherwise would have.
Here’s an example:
Store #1 is selling jackets for $100. There’s a red one, a blue one and a green one. If you want all three, you will have to spend $300.
Store #2 is selling the same jackets, but in a bundle for $240. Essentially each jacket is worth $80.
Sounds like a better deal right?
However, if you don’t like the blue and green jacket and only like the red jacket, then paying for the bundle is not worth the price. If you just buy the jacket you want, then you will only spend $100, but get the “$80” jacket in the bundle from Store #2 forces you to spend $140 extra than you planned to.
The only way the bundle is a better deal is if you want to own all 3 jackets.
In the end, the amount of money spent is the only actual important number here. They want as much money from you as they can get. If you are only willing to spend $100 dollar, don’t spend $240.
Halo games in the past never had events like Halo Infinite. There is a reason why these seasonal events are temporary and are part of a pass that requires you to play. It’s already generous enough that the main season’s battlepass is purchasable. But you break an event’s rewarding purpose if you can just require them 5 years from now. Many F2P games do this. However, only most games allow you to gain exclusive main-event rewards after the event but then require a hefty grind to do so. League, Overwatch, Destiny, Apex, all have similar systems.
Secondly, Anything is a huge mess of a catalog due to unorganization. Previous Halo games were able to accomplish this because any cosmetics they had, were all there is you’d barely get anything new months from now in terms of armor and emblems cause it would be new maps. Halo 5 is an example of this: Every month launched with a fat load of armors, weapons, and customizations where it was just a mess in the inventory to even get around.
Reading what everyone says, you’re all just repeating each other. It honestly just doesn’t sound like any of you ever played a F2P game before. Even though Infinite follows a way where F2P provides FOMO and creates inconvenient circumstances. It just requires you to be part of their game and its journey. This is how Free-To-Play works. It sounds bad due to FOMO, but that’s what makes them repeatable every year with new types of rewards to gain. Past Halo games were unable to do this. So in the end, we gain more in Infinite than we do in previous Halo games due to the long run.
But, rebuttle, past halo games came out of the box pretty much done. each game added to the previous game, w/ features or sandbox items. there was no “we gonna ship only the multi player and take months to drop a Beta to co op”. Forge I’ll give a pass since scripting is being implemented, and that’s new so it need bug fixes
True, it would be out of the norm to allow exclusive event items to be purchaseable after the fact…but this is Halo, need i remind that CE is the first game to bring the dual stick control scheme? and that one of the core values was it was a party game? we should just let it become another cookie cutter F2P and not innovate? like maybe an actual progression system that hasn’t been there since 2015? (5 didn’t have progression, and I’ll die on that hill. you’re telling me getting a lil pack of cards with a funni car in it that’s a one use is progression? and this is coming from someone who no life the game). wouldn’t it bring more people back if they miss something and 343 went “we opened up a part of the shop where you can get event items”. or heck, why not do something like the Armis Crate idea I shared a few posts back, where 1-5 items it the pool is randomly a event item?
Another thing i want to add would be fracture events are “good” events that i feel work, cause they are completely different to the norm. events like Joint Ops or Tactical Ops don’t since its just normal canon items. Fracture is different since its basically an entirely different thing. and even THEN they gave the base sets for free. remember that the Tenrai Core was barred from being acquired after S1? a set of armor that got people hyped for infinite? “well its F2P so since its that, we gotta do FOMO to keep people on this game”. you do know arguments and defenses like this is why they made it F2P, right? they did it to try to get as many players as possible, and monetize as much as they can. : /
however from the sounds of it, FOMO F2P structure seems legit actually i wanna break something down
Fort and Apex are bad comparisons. the main game mode is very different to Halo’s, being that as BR. I know Fort had Team Death match, and Apex tried it, but they didnt hold a candle to BR. and BR, the repetition is different to Halo since you start with nothing, w/ each update changing the only map (or few maps since apex has a few. i think fort does have a few maps nowadays too? but i might be wrong) with only a select amount of maps, you sort of get “attached” as you watch them change. tell me did any of infinite maps change? no
Destiny’s another bad example since you’re guardian(s) don’t just play crucible. you got campaign, raids, strikes, Osiris, and gambit. and all of those game modes your guardian(s). in turn there’s more than just normal match making.
Overwatch you’ll get me, since I honestly never was into the hero shooter. all I got is its competitive and everything is under lootboxes, which is different to infinite…wait, OW1 wasn’t free tho, right? so its in the same realm as Sea of Theives and MCC; you have to buy the game. so you’re talking about OW1: 2022 update, aka OW2, and that was beaten and battered for how its monatixation was as terrible as infinities. heck, as my joke entails, Its just a glorified update like Madden (will still say I’m not well versed with Overwatch, so i cant really say anything else about it other than that. but please, do educate me about it, would love to hear how its going)
True each game is F2P, but they’re still do it much differently. frankly i forgot to add that D2 wasn’t free the entire time of its life. kind of did what Evolve did and went F2P (lol anyone remember Evolve? that 1v4 monster hunter game?).
another thing to add is FOMO isnt what makes it repeatable, its how the game changes. like Fort. I only remember that game when it was 2018. compare that to Fort now? Completely different. if I was interested in the game, Id go back and play it because it changed itself. heck, my 2 close friends, 1 of them jokes saying “we don’t talk about that” anytime we talk about fort, picked it back up when No Build was implemented. same with Apex. each update adds a new hero, changing the game dynamic big or small. same with overwatch. Destiny is an entirely different beast since they add a bunch of stuff. why not we add games that you pay but add (or use to add) free BPs…like sea of thieves. compare SoT now to 2018 is the same thing with Fort, different dynamics. until last update, there was no matchmaking. you wanted PVP? you had to go into a server and find people, unless you were playing Arena (may that sweat fest rest in peace lol).
5 was also baren at launch when it came to content. armor selection wasn’t as vast as you think. 216 helms and armor? cool, but there’s a lot of doubles since 343 has a lovely knack of playing with paint jobs of said armor (helioskril literally has 3 different versions, all essentially changing the secondary color’s paint job) the updates was to try and bring people back to play. the dam Gravity Hammer was patched in 4 months later. or what about infection 7 months later? 5’s UI is utter trash in general. MCC’s not great, but if i remember right, it follows a form of Reach’s inventory, where you go in, click what armor you want, and then pick the version of it (or attachment for helms). Past games, as said before, came with everything out of the box and didn’t need updates every few months with items. Like why not we look at the Bandit Rifle (or BMR cause as much we can argue, its a DMR w/out a scope). they said that its similar to Halo 5’s magnum, where its a 5 shot kill…so why didnt they just Have it into the game at launch? and before you argue about the grav ham, infinite’s is its own beast, no lunge, swings slower, and has a bigger AOE, so its moreso like “Gravity hammer Mrk 2” kind of thing.
The game is built on a modified Halo 5 engine, couldn’t you just take the stats of the magnum but switch out the model n animations of the pistol with the new gun? ( btw files from 5 have been data mined, so items are there, i think?).
why not bring stuff like Vid Master challenges or Achilles grind? that’s exclusive but it requires people to actually play the game. like do something other than weeklies. events in infinite is just glorified challenges for the week. imo, an event that can take a few hours to finish…isnt really as exclusive as it seems? like whenever an event happens, I play 1 hour, do 2-3 challenges, and drop the game to play something else like Dark Souls or Killing floor (speaking of KF2, infinite events are like their seasonal updates, where you can do challenges for something that lasts a month or 2…in a day). I’m not gonna go “I know everyone else’s does that” since idk everyone, but I know there’s some peeps that do it. and I know, on any level of knowing how a F2P works, that’s not a good way of player retention
I cant vouch for everyone else, but I can say that I played Fort for the first Chapter, and I’m not dead so I’ve watched it evolve since 2018. Remember when they changed the BP to a page system so you can pick your unlock…if my memory confirms…I think MCC came with that idea first? <.<

want to quote this again cause my dude, my DUDE where were you the last year?? the game dropped the BALL. the game still has desync, the season’s were too long, customs and theatre are buggy messes, BTB was broken for months. Cross Core, even tho is slowly being implemented, still not there so it bars armor customization. events are lack luster (tell me, back when Tenrai was being rotated, Fiesta is a event level game mode? a game that’s been around since Halo 3?? Joint Ops, as much as i find it very lopsided, is more of a event game.) not to mention the lay offs, meaning less hands to work on it. and Contract work has been shown to not be working. imagine me working on something for a year, then you have to continue it. sounds fine, yet how I would code wouldn’t be the same as you would code. maybe I hairball a lot, so you would have to take hours to optimize it, then which leaves less time for you to work on it.
Dude, im not reading all that. I saw one sentence and ill reply to that only.
want to quote this again cause my dude, my DUDE where were you the last year?? the game dropped the BALL.
You also seen the constant resignations of multiple key staff members, absolutely over 100 fired, Bonnie Ross leaving and the community playing death threats to her, Joe Staten silently leaving without a goodbye, ect.
But you also see them try and make small time changes, that were the community’s wishes. Adjusting weapons, cheapening the shop, makign cores free, seaspn 1 mark V core free, cross core coatings, visors, attchments, even surprising everyone with custom game like 3 months in advance than their original planned date.
Its better that they seem to have a better release of content now. Its not like they werent doing anything the past year at all.
That came with the winter update. That just happened. They kinda had to do that since they were making a mini season filled with content that was supposed to be in season 1 using the Mk V core.
It took them a full year to put content that was meant for day 1 into the game and you’re trying to say that was such a great thing. They added content after a year that was meant for launch. They were forced to give out the Mk V core because the content was for that core and they learned the lesson that locking the core behind a paywall decreased cosmetic sales. If you don’t have the core then you won’t pay for the coating in the store. You also won’t work for that Mk V item from the weekly challenges if you don’t have the core. It was required to do that to try a regain the tiniest amount of faith and good will.
I never said a great thing. What youre saying is mostly theoretical. I might as well say its not like they do this intentionally, which, makes more sense since they release updates all year only from player feedback and wishes. Its not like it wasnt released at all anyways. Again, they released what the players strived for.
If the Mark V was true, why they decide to make all future cores free too? If anything it was just a marketing loophole that broke thie rewarding system for players.
The cores are free moving forward because if they don’t give you access to the core then they get less store transactions. Make player pay for something to pay for something else = less people buying things = less money made.
I know I’m honestly sorry lol. literally the meme “I’m not reading all that. congratulations, or my condolences” on my post and I totally get it. I’m gonna try from here on out to shorten my responses (famous last words). I know I’m very wordy
Death threats are beyond scummy, that shouldn’t be tolerated what so ever. and I have seen the mass firings and the mass resignations, its reported on all the time. If i come off that I’m going at employees that work on the game like programmers or artist, i don’t mean to. the higher ups like MS are to blame…But. the game was still shipped out like the way it did. first impressions are everything, dude. start out the gate poorly, the race is gonna crash and burn for you.
Gonna repeat myself, why was this not there day 1? each update they should have been giving cores out for free. cross core should be a feature, not added in slowly. the Bots do it lol. and customs been shipped in past games on day 1 since CE. I get why they weren’t, is how 343 is managed, but still its not an excuse.
only thing I agree with is the price lowering since prices change overtime…but it doesn’t negate what i said about separating everything and putting them into a catalog tho.
I hope so, and we don’t get long swaths of nothingness. the new CEO worked on reviving MCC, so here’s to 2023
again I’m gonna try working on shortening my responses…tho no promises lol
I happily do. I teach elementary PE and I must have good comfortable shoes since I’m on my feet all day. I’m an adult and happily will spend some money on an in game cosmetic item too.
This isn’t any different than other live service prices. I don’t get why the community complains about these prices. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.
Go look at Fortnite or CoD’s store. It’s the same prices. Lots of bundles more than the entire battle pass.
I agree, it’s super lame. And I don’t mind complaining about shop prices and forced bundles (especially when some bundles are padded with emblems just to add price).
On a rare occasion, they’ll release something like gloves for 300 or 400 credits. Sure, if I buy a whole armor set for 1000 or 1200, I’m getting more armor for the value I’m paying, but I don’t want the whole armor. I just want the gloves. In fact, I got some awesome gloves once (Hopes Vice for MK VII). I was sad when the armor pads I wanted (UNSC for MC VII), pads which matched the gloves perfectly, only appeared as part of a 1400 armor set (that didn’t even come with the gloves). That’s simply not affordable for someone like me.
Sometimes, you’ll find a mythic effect or kill effect sold separately, and I’ve bought a few of those happily. Then they had the ice set, and I’d been waiting to buy both the mythic effect and kill effect, but they sold them together with two armor effects (a shoulder thing and head thing) that I wasn’t at all interested in. Altogether, the price was beyond what I could afford.
I don’t know if many people are like me, but I’d buy more stuff more frequently if I could buy what I want in smaller portions rather than buying more (of what I won’t ever use) in bulk.
