I was really excited for the customization in this game. I have been seeing a lot of fan artwork and noticed that people really make Spartans look really cool by having a lot of attachments on them. By this I mean like, both of the forearms and thighs are both occupied by some piece of equipment. And they have a lot of different pieces colored differently unlike how we color our Spartans in the games we have all played before. In Infinite though, we only get to add one forearm item and one leg item and we have preset color schemes???. WHY is that even a thing. It’s been that way since reach and I can’t understand why we can’t just customize our Spartans thoroughly like that. And the paint monetization is just sad. Like I get it, it’s a free multiplayer, but there’s better ways to milk money other than preset paint jobs. I’ve been playing Halo since I was 4 and being 23 now I’m STILL waiting to have thorough customization, gotta say that I am very upset and I’m surprised nobody is really speaking up. I can’t be the only person that doesn’t think this is lame
I do hate that you cant choose your own colors. Mainly because always in every halo there isnt an armor that i like right away to choose from but at least with the colors i can still make my spartan my “own” way until the armor i like is unlocked. Now, Im stuck using plain steel until I actually come across the color scheme i like which i dont know if it will even be in game. I’m always Steel (or closest thing to black) and Gold. So who knows if I will even be able to get that color scheme.
Same goes with armor. With the battle pass I may have to wait till season 2 just to even get an armor I actually like
people did speak up, noones listening though, whats baffling is that theres people defending coatings

that alone is a huge argument against coatings

I donno fam, it seems most people likes paying for the colour blue. Coatings just -Yoinking!- sucks.
Yeah ive felt there hasn’t been many options to pick from, and I know it’s just a flight and it’s not final. But the content in the pass doesn’t feel like it’s worth grinding for either.
the armour coating is disappointing. I know it’s new now that we can choose different colours across the armour set, but adding that to the game and no making it fully customisable and having it locked behind unlockable coatings, feels very bitter sweet.

They are listening and have responded.
It turns out the coating system is actually used on every single object in the game and is a core part of the slipspace engine’s design. So if they changed it now to primary-secondary color all they would really be doing is making a coating for each combination of those colors and then that would be it.
Instead they want to take advantage of the coating system to give us unique color layouts, such as Scorpion Punch with it’s Steel overall look, but it’s N7esque red on the helmet and right arm. That wouldn’t be possible with a simple primary-secondary system. Or the camouflage pattern seen on some coatings. Or the coatings that very clearly have more than 2 colors. We can get up to 8 different colors on our armor with some of these coatings.
We could even eventually start to get coatings that cause luminescence, making parts of our armor glow or light up.
The coating system will also likely affect Forge allowing us to apply the coatings to forge objects and create the exact aesthetic we are going for in our custom maps. And 343 can use it to create unique enemy types or other campaign assets with pre-existing models. Like mini bosses in the world that have very distinct armor colors.

respectfully disagree on this one, the first goal in mind was monetization, we could have had a color/material system that implements way more than primary or secondary colors, doom 2016 had sliders for how metallic you want weapons and armor to look, weathered or pristine, patterns etc,
coatings might indeed offer way more than the 2/3 color system of old halos down the line but monetization is an obstacle, why not do the 8 different colors you said available through options in the customization menu?
people that dont intent on spending a dime on this game (including me) will have limited options. plus i hate monetization schemes with a passion

Because it’s a F2P game and we’ve accepted customization will be $.
yea it sucks but nothing can be done about it.

But see it’s not about having a primary and secondary. It’s about customizing all aspects of our armor. Instead it it just being two choices, let us color all parts of our armor, from knee caps to hands to feet to legs, interior mesh, so on. There’s so much potential and I feel they missed big time for trying to milk money. They really could make even more with this concept.
I wanted to make clear as well that I understand it’s a monetization thing and there has to be a way for them to make money outside of the season pass, but the halo lore is huge. There’s a bunch of colors/ materials/ armors. To simply limit our customization in what is going to be the longest halo game ever is just dumb. I get that if they gave us colors then it would be a huge missed opportunity for them to make money. But they can also make it kind of like rocket league in a way. You have a money system ( but instead of RL’s system we have a type like reach where we complete challenges and rank up to get credits) and then we can unlock special color schemes outside of “regular” metal colors by completing difficult tasks both online and campaign. It’s not like they haven’t done this before, anybody else complete the vidmasters??? I’m just disappointed that a game that will be played by millions is doing cheeky monetization with the color wheel and then proceed to have almost no liberty with said colors and then use the same customizing armor choices we’ve had since reach.
You do know this isnt all the customization there is right? Try reading a few blogs/posts and you will learn that there is more to come.

I’m aware, it’s the color wheel lock that bothers me more than anything. They might add more armor pieces like I said I wanted which is great news im all for it. My main point is that there are ways about going around this whole scheme without taking so much out of the game that is already there but locked behind presets. If it was some indie game I’d hold back on my criticisms and wouldn’t speak up, but this is a flagship game backed up by basically unlimited money, doing this is just sad. Monetization and politics aside, it really makes no sense to preset color schemes in the first place unless it’s something special. IE: if they had silent shadow armor for elites, or honor guard armors or ODST black with insignia ect. They could charge for that and honestly they’d take my money, but locking the whole color wheel away is sour imo.

“backed up by basically unlimited money”
lol sure. Not saying Microsoft isn’t loaded, but to think they are putting their top dollars into a videogame is rediculous.
“Monetization and politics aside”
When did politics come into this?
I am indifferent on the color wheel and selection.
A common misconception I see repeatedly is the belief that all coatings or most coatings are going to be locked behind $5. This is not the case, and it seems like alot of folks have not applied logic to this.
First and foremost yes, Halo Infinite is a free to play game. that means Monetizations, in the form of the Battlepass and some Cosmetic items in the shop. Other than that? Everything is unlocked in game via Achievements, Challenges, Events, Free items in the Pass which is available to everyone, Campaign ventures, etc. If you were to compare this to another free game, say, Fortnite, which has $20 skins…It’s not even a competition. $25 (Guessing) Battlepass vs $20 skins? yeah, I know which one i’d prefer.
I also understand that alot of people are upset or worried they won’t be able to find a coating that they like…which is a valid concern but not one that will hold up. Not only will we have a large selection of coatings available at launch, but more coming in MID-SEASON and every season after launch for the weeks and months and years to come. I highly, highly, highly doubt 343 will just push 5 coatings for the whole game and say done. They know what colors people wear. they’ve seen what the most popular colors are and what colors aren’t as used. They’ll have a plethora of combinations, patterns, materials, etc coming in. I guarantee you will be able to find your favored combination in-game.
In addition as for armors, WE ARE PLAYING A FLIGHT. This is a small slice of the game to ensure that equipping pieces and using the battlepass actually works. It is in no way representative of the final game. AT launch we will have a massive selection of armors from the Mark VII core, Reach armors from the Mark V Armor core, The Yoroi armor core, and another unnamed core that was leaked. That’s on season one. This game AT LAUNCH will literally have over double the amount of customization as Reach. This game AT LAUNCH will literally have over double the amount of customization as Reach.
TLDR is, most of the Coatings are not paywalled and the ones that are, are much cheaper than other free games. Coatings will by principal offer far more customization than Primary/Secondary choices. The armor seen in flight is not even half of One of the armor cores.

I think some people seem to forget that we’ve been playing a flight and not the full and final game…lmao

By “monetization” I meant that outside of the fact that monetization has to be involved / and “politics” meaning like personal opinion. I didn’t mean the literal word politics, it’s just a figure of speech

The reason for the right forearm left thigh equipment only is because picked up equipment(grappleshot, repulsor, etc) goes on your left forearm and your sidearm goes on your right thigh when not in use.

This is irrelevant, when you remove a customization feature beloved for over a decade in favour of a curation model driven by monetization you lose the right to brush off criticism because amount of options will be free, you’ve removed free choice for a curated one, and concerns such as not having a coating in the colour scheme you’ve rocked for nearly two decades is a problem that we shouldn’t write off.

I understand the concern, I really do. I happen to be one of the players that enjoys the idea of the coatings system and the potential that it has for customization, but i’m not so blind as to say that it’s the best system in existence. I do hope some kind of compromise or new system is considered to bring the most to all players so we can all just focus on having fun
