Not everything needs a super deep lore explanation

Whether it’s asking why the Banished aren’t all red, how the Grappleshot can carry someone as heavy as Chief, or what allows the player to see a map of the Halo ring, I think some people are looking way too far into things that just boil down to simple gameplay mechanics. I get that y’all can’t get enough of Halo lore. I love the story to death myself, including some of the books (I haven’t read them all, but I know a decent amount of outside material). With that in mind, I’m not at all trying to say that you’re crazy or anything like that. But some of these things need to be overlooked for the sake of gameplay. Every Halo game has inconsistencies! It’s all just a matter of whether or not it’s fun to play. I know people are theorizing that there’s another Covenant remnant working with the Banished, but the real reason the enemy colors are the same as the og Covenant is likely to provide players with a sense of familiarity. Everyone knows the ranks of our alien foes by their palette. Why change it now with different shades of red when the current tier system still works? As for the Grappleshot, well… it’s just a grappling hook. This Mjolnir armor can do some crazy stuff. I wouldn’t look too far into it. And finally, the map of Halo is all but a typical open-world mechanic. Maybe a UNSC drone did a scan of the ring and mapped it out? I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s a huge deal. The point is, just have some fun! There’s no need to stress out over every little detail.

343 should just take it easy. Also, so should all you guys who like to just get technical. Master Chief is Master Chief. He can do crazy stuff if he wants.

I agree. Above all else, a game needs to be fun to play.

Preach brotha! I’m a massive lore addict, and I love finding out every little nook and cranny of of Halo’s vast lore… but at some point we all have to accept certain things as they are. Constraining absolutely every little insignificant detail to a lore explanation will massively limit the franchise in terms of creativity. The last thing I want a writing team to be thinking about is “does our super interesting and compelling story mesh with the fact that the grapple shot was developed by Misriah Armory in conjunction with ONI’s Materials Group?”

If the rule of cool is in effect, then I’ll be able to work my way around whatever minor lore inconsistencies pop up. In fact, one of the best parts about the lore community is our ability to find our own head cannon and community-accepted reasons behind something that happened in the canon that contradicts or conflicts with previous lore.

I mean, all these people pointing out all the things that make Infinite feel less like ‘Halo’ when really, what was a Halo game by definition? Every Halo game to my knowledge was pack full of lore bits and technical stuff that fit in the universe but then there were just things that a lot of people either overlooked or just didn’t care that didn’t really add up.

At the end of the day a Halo experience for me is how much fun I have playing a Halo game while still having the feeling of playing a Halo game. Even if the mechanics change or the art style, to me Halo as a feeling is the story it tells.

Exactly this! I feel bad for 343’s lore people sometimes. They’re constantly under pressure to keep things absolutely perfect when that just isn’t possible when you’re dealing with a sci-fi game that sometimes needs to push the envelope a bit.

While I agree the base likes to obsess over things that ultimately don’t really matter, I do find the banished being watered down of particular issue. We might as well just keep fighting the remnants of Jul’s faction if they’re just going to be covenant 2.0.

I think it’s really cool when they can figure out a lore reason for everything. It’s just a nice touch and helps even more with immersion as long as it’s not a stretch like the H4 Chief armour thing. With that said, I don’t think you need a lore explanation for every little thing. For example that map. Maybe Chief goes and finds a forerunner data center and he downloads the map from there, that’d be cool. If not, I don’t care. It’s just a map. Not gonna ruin the entire plot just because we don’t know how he got a map. At least in my opinion, maybe that would ruin it for some people lol Even something bigger like the art style change. Yeah it’s cool if they give us an actual lore reason, but honestly if they just came out and said “yeah we’re just going with a different art style”, I’d be 100% okay with that. Not a big deal. It just depends for me. Some stuff I don’t care, some stuff I do.

You open up an interesting idea for a mission. Maybe Chief doesn’t have a map when the game first starts! What if you have to find a Cartographer, similar to in Halo CE and 3? Then you get access to the open-world map!

True, the lore is good and should take a back seat to the main game. Not everything needs to be explained, but the games do need to be fun.

This is cool. It would add an epic mission to the campaign.

Right!? The more I think about it, the more I want it.

Likely the different enemy colors will be to display shield/armor strength or rank. Sort of like how Red elites have stronger shields than blue elites and gold elites have stronger shields than both of those. There’s a simple explanation of rank to why the elites armor comes in different colors, but at the end of the day that’s not the main reason that the armor has different colors. The main reason is a gameplay function so we can tell how strong an elites shield is and can strategize to be able to kill it quickly. I feel like thats something that can get forgotten sometimes, the gameplay reason is more important than the lore reason. It’s cool to know the Gold elites are called zealots, but it has no real practicality. Knowing that the gold armor means high shield strength is important though. And even then, I don’t think every little detail does need to be explained either. With the grappling hook example, what is everyone asking how it can lift Chief going to do the math to see what the proper tensile strength required to lift him is? No. It doesn’t really matter how it can lift him. Obviously it can, so lets call it a day and move on. I mean if we really want to go into detail about things can we get a chapter in a book explaining why spartans can flip tanks but can’t handle pistol recoil? I mean I just can’t enjoy myself when I’m playing CE and see how much recoil the magnum has. It’s too game breaking of an experience.

Ironically enough, they explain every single little minute detail about the art style with lore, but none of the gameplay is ever addressed the same way:
Wha can Spartans no longer dual wield?
Why did Spartans suddenly loose the ability to sprint and shoot at the same time?
Why did the Mjolnir suddenly stop kicking you out of zoom while zoomed, then started doing that again just a few months later?
Why was smart-link abandoned by the UNSC altogether and replaced with the less practical smart scope?

If people are going to point out stuff behind the physics of a grapple hook, why not point out the fact that space travel in halo is ridiculous, just like EVERY OTHER SCIENCE FICTION STORY.

Nah when it comes to that grapple hook hitting a grunt mid flight and sending Chief flying sky high I have to draw the line. It’s so gimmicky I can’t handle it, I’m all for gameplay and I can over look things but this is one that has triggered me. I know halo is sci-fi fantasy but it’s mostly grounded in the believable. I can tell you now this is more painful then fun to me, it makes me sad…
