Nominate your favorite H4 missions

There is no doubt ‘what is your favorite Halo 4 mission’ has been done again and again. So… let’s spice it up.

Nominate a mission for each of the following categories/investments (or just say N/A if you’re somehow unfamiliar with the venture):

-story
-combat
-exploration
-easter eggs
-tricking

Then state your overall favorite mission and why. Feel free to explain your choices.

My nominations:

> Story - Midnight. I used to despise the QTE at the end but now I’m finding myself appreciating it and for once in a Halo game, I actually watch the ending cutscene. Also, I love Didact’s dialogue. I’d say Reclaimer comes in second, the conversations between Chief and Cortana are pretty interesting.
>
> Combat - Composer. It’s ideal for speedrunning, plenty of risks and thrills, tactical jumps, it has that sandbox feel (i.e. Silent Cartographer). I appreciate the concussion rifle. And who could forget the Elites of the Apocalypse? D:
>
> Exploration - Reclaimer. The level is massive and it’s glitches are even bigger. It’s strongly reminiscent of Halo 2, if only it had the concussion rifle on it…
>
> Easter eggs - Forerunner. Typically, you had to wait or sneak past the warring enemies at the Cryptum. Now you can rain down hell with the Incineration Cannon or even the odds with the BiRi. It’s just a shame it doesn’t work if you have skulls turned on.
>
> Tricking - Requiem. Comm node launching, enough said. Again, I appreciate the concussion rifle.

My overall favorite mission is Requiem. It feels like this mission is done, but that is certainly not the case. I’m finding myself revisiting it frequently, it has a lot more appeal than the others.

My favorite mission is Reclaimer. I like how you get to ride the Elephant and you get the target locater…

> My favorite mission is Reclaimer. I like how you get to ride the Elephant and you get the target locater…

I’d have preferred the option to drive the Mammoth. That thing can go really fast in the right situations.

There ought to have been 2 Target Locators, the one from Reach being optional.

I didn’t find the campaign all too enjoyable, but Requiem was a pretty solid mission. It was the only time in the game that I felt like I was playing a Halo title. I was alone on a mysterious world with hostile alien life coming for me, very Combat Evolved.

Midnight is probably my favorite mission, in any Halo game, period. I just love everything about it. The helplessness you feel when Cortana is rapidly deteriorating. The Death Star trench run. The awesome music. Flying through low gravity and feeling like you are a superhero fighting to save the world. Just everything about it is awesome to me.

Midnight. I LOVED the Broadsword run, the rest of being inside his ship was an anxiety attack, especially when the song Arrival started playing and you fought from platform to platform.

Second place, Composer. It also had a “anxiety” feeling to it, with hurrying to stop the Didact from the composer, the Mantis section was fun, and the rest of the levels fights altogether were fun.

Have to say dawn cos it was like other halo first missions.for combat I would say infinity cos it quite hard on legendary

The trench run of the broadsword was the only thing I recall enjoying throughout the campaign.

Composer, simply because of the feels. When I saw the scientists escaping from the covenant at the start of the level for the first time… The chills hit me, hard. The song “faithless” was very, very fitting for that moment. The ending cutscene of the level was also pretty gruesome and quite shocking, at least for the first time.

> The trench run of the broadsword was the only thing I recall enjoying throughout the campaign.

Seriously? Any of the Mantis fights? The holdout on Infinity? Any part of Reclaimer?

Definitely the Broadsword run and then the rest of Midnight.

That’s my favourite, I thoroughly enjoyed the Halo 4 campaign

For me Halo 4 has had the best campaign yet. The story and game play is almost flawless and every mission was enjoyable. In past Halos there has been great missions but also incredibly frustrating missions that only a fool or speed runner would do again (such as Cortana and The Library). In H4 I have enjoyed every mission and they all have that replay-ability factor. I like Some better than others but only slightly.

The shorter and faster styled missions are probably my favorite.

Dawn was great and I loved the constant action in it. Short and sweet.

Requiem is a pain on legendary but has a very classic Halo feel which is great, however I felt it dragged on allot.

Forerunner was also a very good mission which was probably the most frustrating (and hardest for me). It was filled with combat and the ghost run at the end was a great way to finish the mission and felt very much lik the endings to Halo 1 and 3. However similar to Halo 1 and 3 I felt the environment made it feel to staged and the classic feeling wasn’t there. Still a great ending.

Infinity has everything. Though I said I prefer missions which don’t drag on (like Long Night of Solace in reach), I felt Infinity did not drag on despite being the longest mission. It has tanks, Matis fights and feels very quick paced. It was also pretty easy on legendary.

Reclaimer is very fun. Especially to speed run. I love speed running and I don’t think I have ever had as much fun speed running on Reclaimer than on any other mission. The Elephant was fun to sit on and blowing so much stuff up felt childishly fun.

Shutdown is just beautiful. The pelican driving was a nice edition and that last cut scene was pretty crazy xD. That said it feels very long and repetitive unless you use the speed running glitch early on.

Composer probably had the best feel to it. The cut scenes were amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole mission. That said I don’t enjoy the constant onslaught of vehicles in part of the mission.

Midnight had the best start to a mission I have ever played. Unfortunately again, similar to the ghost run on Forerunner, the whole Broadsword run felt to staged. That said it is one of the funnest experiences I have had on Halo. The constant onslaught of enemies was not only fun but challenging and felt similar to facing the Flood. However the ending was not to impressive. In fact it probably could not have been pulled off any worse. I liked the story aspect, but where is my boss battle like in H3, before another Broadsword run to escape the ship xD

For me though, I would have to say Infinity was my favorite mission. it had everything in and was very fast paced with plenty of action and vehicle use. I could play that mission 100 times over before getting bored. That said I enjoyed all the cut scenes almost as much as the missions. They just blew me away.

I like Forerunner because it’s the only mission in the Campaign where Covenant and Prometheans fight each other.

On the other hand, I really like Composer.

Then again, it was fun to play with the Broadsword in Midnight.

I have no idea of the name of the level at the moment, but the one that featured the Mammoth stands out to me.

I really did enjoy riding along with that rolling base. A bit like the Gondola rides of Halo 2, but i was free to do some roaming as well.

Also it amused me that there was no ai script to stop. I may have left a warthog in their way so it was just pushing it along.

story- Forerunner
combat- Infinity
exploration- Shutdown
easter eggs- Shutdown
tricking- Reclaimer

First Place: Midnight
Second Place (Close to First): Infinity

Composer. That mission was awesome.

Story- This one’s a tie for me between Dawn and Midnight. Midnight is the awesome climax of the game and the final epic showdown between the Master Chief and the Didact, not to mention Cortana’s tragic death, while Dawn is a direct continuation from Halo 3 showing Master Chief for the first time in 5 years, as well as our first look at Requiem: the setting of Halo 4, hiding dark mysteries within.

Combat- I’ve got to give this one to Infinity. I’m not a big fan of the forest sequence, but once you get inside the Scorpion it really kicks off. The tank allows you to just punch through the sniper towers, Wraiths and Ghosts that cross your path before you make your entrance into the Infinity, where you quickly dispatch some Covenant with a few more shells. Then it’s into the corridors where you quickly discover the game’s first Mantis which makes the level a breeze, smashing through all Covenant and Promethean resistance until you reach the climax of the mission: the Infinity’s exterior. Phantoms, Banshees and the Didact himself swarm the skies, where you are left to defend the deck solo with two Mantis’s, a few rocket launchers, turrets and AA guns. Gunfire and explosions are everywhere, making a truly hectic battle.

Exploration- This one goes to Requiem hands down. As soon as you first crash land on the planet, scour the wreckage and continue on foot across the beautiful landscape, it’s like Combat Evolved all over again. The first ecounter with a Warthog is such as simple one, but just means so much to the fans like me. When you first encounter the giant Forerunner structures and bask in their beautiful glow, it’s just jaw dropping. Even now after having finished the campaign twice, I always make sure to gaze up at the ceiling inside the structures because it’s a sight that simply cannot be missed.

Easter eggs- This one also goes to Requiem for me, entirely for the mission’s opening. There are just so many secrets hidden within the crash site, whether it be suicidal Elites, hidden power weapons or audio logs, there is just a wealth of secrets. One of the most shocking is the recording by Dr. Halsey herself that states Cortana could’ve survived Rampancy! This fact is made much more shocking once finishing the game, and is one of the most story-related Easter Eggs I have ever seen.

Tricking- I don’t really know too much about this…

And a message to the OP, how can you not watch the end cutscenes to Halo games?!?! They are some of the best out there, particularly the Halo CE, 2 and 3 ones. I’ve finished Halo 3 about 5 times, and every time I not only watched the end cutscene, but the credits too because I was just so much in awe that I just wanted to stare at the TV and listen to the marvelous music.

Midnight sure does have a lot of haste. But where were those extra Prometheans Cortana was warning me about? It didn’t seem like Didact was mustering his forces. Compared to The Maw, which had a never ending army of Flood.

Composer has a good amount of thrills too. But I’d have liked more vehicle choices in the Composer fight. And marines. How did a team named after 343i employees with 3-4 Mantises at their disposal get overwhelmed so easily? It does not even look like they put up a fight (where is the Wraith/Ghost/Banshee debris)? Where are the environment changes?

The two way battles on Forerunner seemed spectacular at first. But none of the fights stuck out to me (there were a few moments where I saw a Battlewagon leap at the Covies and watching the Phantom crash into a group of Prometheans was interesting). It’d have been a good opportunity to introduce Hunters, Zealots, the Covenant’s best rather than the petty minors and majors.

No explanations? I’ll just take some guesses. Forerunner for Didact’s awakening and the Ghost escape, Shutdown for the Pelican and choosing which tower to tackle, Shutdown for it’s easter eggs at the start, and Reclaimer is just plain awesome for speedrunning and launching.

Combat - Good explanation! I like it!

Exploration - And that’s just in-game.

Easter eggs - I wouldn’t call those easter eggs but Requiem does feel more lively than other missions. Most eggs make sense for their existence and I never noticed that implication!

Tricking - Give it a try, it can extend a Halo game’s replay value indefinitely.

As for your comment, I have watched them a dozen of times so I typically skip them (minus H2, as I like to see Elite survivors in the cutscene). H4’s is the first to intrigue me.

There was so much to discuss, I don’t know where to start. Infinity also has some excellent out of maps.
