NOBLE team as people, with personalities.

Now, most people don’t like NOBLE at all, because they were ‘stale’ and ‘boring’ and stuff like that. But you can’t judge them so easily! They all have personalities that are unique and, in my opinion, interesting. For example…

Carter. He is rather unemotional, but if you look back further into his story, you find out that he blamed himself for the death of the previous NOBLE SIX. As so, he is strict and reclusive when it comes to personality, seeing as he (And SIX) are the only Spartan’s not to show any humor. He does not allow emotional ties in case he loses somebody close. He also focuses purely on the objective, to protect the lives of those under the command. This is nodded at by the line said by Halsey: “Your primary objective? Commander, are you a puppet or a Spartan?” So, there’s the explanation for Carter’s ‘stale-ness’

Kat. Kat is normally very focused like Carter, for she too blames herself for the death of NOBLE SIX. However, she manages to seclude this into her conscious and return to normal life (well, as normal as can possibly be for a Spartan). She is not totally closed-off, as can be seen in the opening cutscene in ‘Long Night Of Solace’ where she plays with Carter, easing him into her inane plan. She is also slightly cheeky and playful with him, making him inform Holland instead of herself. Kat also displays curiosity in most unusual things, which could sort of be put as a ‘hobby’ or interest. does a stale character have a hobby, interest and unique behaviour? Most times, no.

Emile. Emile is an interesting character and has his own vendetta against the Covenant. He believes that ‘you should enjoy doing what you do’, so he, in a way, enjoys killing his enemies, and even carved his helmet as a last act of spite against his foes; to intimidate and humiliate them. He shows signs of dry humour, and believes that Spartans and people are not the same, excluding himself from most people, hence the reason why he neve removes his helmet. For example, he mocks jorge as he tries to talk to the girl at Visegrad Relay, then saying “Big man forgets what he is sometimes.” His attitude is mainly one for mocking, as if he enjoys causing aggression and unease. For example, again at Visegrad, Jorge, says “She needs a full psychiatric work up” and Emile Replies “She’s not the only one…” To agitate Jorge.

Jorge. Jorge is by far the most outright with his emotions. His pulse ‘elevates’ when Halsey’s location is glassed by Covenant. He truly respects her and the others in NOBLE. For example, when NOBLE team walk away from Halsey, Jorge remains until dismissed by Halsey. Also, his last words, possibly the best lines in Reach (IMO). “Listen, Reach has been good to me. Time to return the favor. Tell 'em to make it count.” This shows his powerful emotional ties with his homeworld, Reach.

Jun. Jun is a sarcastic joker who shows deep respect for the Covenant, as he says “I kill the enemy, I do not hate them…” He also appears to be a good friend of Jorge’s, which is shown in the opening cutscene in ‘Long Night Of Solace’, where he rubs smoldering fire from Jorge’s shoulder, then removes his helmet to talk to him (Apparently a sign of respect) and Jorge does the same. He then jokes with Jorge about the friendship between Kat and Carter. Jun is sociable and communicates constantly, more then protocol allows.

So, to conclude, NOBLE team are, in fact, a group of unique and interesting PEOPLE, not just voices in metal suits. They have their own traits and personalities, and IMO make for very entertaining characters.

NOBLE team were some of the best characters Bungie ever made, except the ODST’s. Seriously, I hte people bumming out Chief because he’s all badass. I don’t care if he’s just a green metal gung-ho hillbilly, he’s got the personality of a kettle. FYI, kettles are generally uninteresting beings.

Reach had a subtle story beneath the lines, sorry it didn’t stick out like it did in Halo CE-3. If only people could understand sophistication in a story, and not a simple boys jutting out like a Neanderthals jaw story.

If “most people don’t like NOBLE team at all” then they are bland characters. That’s all there is to it.

EDIT: (Well, continuation.)

Emile, while reclusive and having a personality like sandpaper, shows deep regret for the loss of Jorge, as he says on the level ‘Pillar Of Autumn’ while manning the Mass Driver, he says ‘This is for Jorge!’ This shows that Emile continues to fight in the name of those closest to him, and that he does in fact care for NOBLE team. He even offers SIX the chance to deliver Cortana and escape from Reach, while he stays behind. He sacrifices himself to allow his last comrade lease from death, a noble sacrifice, indeed…

Also, his last words are in fact heard by an Elite as he kills it while he’s being killed. This shows that Emile doesn’t end the fight while the enemy is still alive. This shows his hatred towards the Covenant by spiting them even in death.

More (and more) will be written in the near future.

> If “most people don’t like NOBLE team at all” then they are bland characters. That’s all there is to it.

Quick question, how much of my post did you read? Or did you just base your thread off the title.

Great argument, by the way.

Very nice post OP.

While I agree with some of your points, it’s my belief that the characters of Noble Team are perhaps too subtle.

They don’t have easily discernible personalities, like Sgt. Johnson or Cortana. But, what they lack in raw emotion, they make up for with wise actions and mentor-like wisdom.

Perhaps the most clear window into the inner-core of each members personality is during their final moments.

Well thanks very much! ^

I agree that they are a little TOO bland though. Shame they weren’t given time to develop.

i tend to think of Seal Team 6 as the real life Noble Team

Noble Team really didn’t come across like this. They looked pretty stale and acted that way too. You would think that their deaths would be something that people would cry over or be sad about. Their deaths did no such thing.

@ crazyfoomandude- Chief has a better connection with Sgt. Johnson and Cortana then the Nobel Team with each other. Those three have been through more than Nobel Team ever could.

Noble Team are sorry lame excuse for Spartans with the exception of Jorge. Jorge respects Halsey cause she is the mother of the spartan program, and all ORIGINAL SPARTAN 2s see her as a mother.

Carter is a terrible commander, the stupid idiot killed himself taking out one Scarab! Chief takes out Scarabs like taking out Ghosts no problem. Carter should feel guilty if he blames himself for Noble 6’s death, he’s a pathetic commander.

Kat is freaking annoying and every time I played the campaign I threw her off every cliff I saw. The moment she got shot I literately LMAO! FINALLY the dumb B**** is dead, good riddance.

Emile feels like he’s above humans, why does he feel superior when the “FACT” is that he is inferior to actual SPARTANS! He walks and talks like he’s a SPARTAN 2 when he’s just a smaller, weaker, less experienced, slower, stupid Spartan 3…ugh! Emile needs to get off his high pony and stop pretending to be something he’s NOT, Jorge is one of the “boys”, he’s the only TRUE Spartan on Noble Team…poor guy has to freaking babysit little Dumb*****, no wonder he died.

Jun and Lol-Reach have a lot in common, both are Lame and BORING! Jun never shuts the hell up and every time I play campaign I look for the nearest cliff to throw him off. He’s like that “Clear Eye” guy in the commercials Ben Stein.

And as for Chief’s Towel Boy Noble 6, well he’s never ever gonna be anything near a SPARTAN 2 much less the Master Chief. He got his butt handed to him by a small Covenant unit at the end of Lol-Reach, HA! what a loser! Hyper Lethal my A**!

Master Chief had a better connection with the audience, he didn’t need to talk much. Kinda how the people reacted to Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2. Both he and Cortana had good chemistry and some of the most memorable lines in Halo.

-Chief- “Sir request permission to leave the station.”
-Lord Hood- “For what purpose Master Chief?”
-Chief- “To give the Covenant back their bomb.”
-Lord Hood- (smiles)“Permission granted.”

-Cortana- “Just one question, what if we miss?”
-Chief- “I wont.”

-Cortana- “So have you got a plan to get out?”
-Chief- “I was gonna shoot my way out, Mix things up a little.”

-Cortana- “Keep your down, there’s two us in here. Remember?”

-Arbiter- “What is it, More Brutes?”
-Chief- “Worst.” (damaged flood ship crashes to Earth.)

-Cortana- “You found me…But so much of me is wrong, out of place. You might be too late.”
-Chief- “You know me, when I make a promise…”
-Cortana- “You keep it, I do know how to pick’em.”
-Chief- “Lucky me.”

(Beginning of Halo3, very epic scene)
-Cortana- “They let me pick. Did I ever tell you that? Choose which ever Spartan I wanted. You know me. I did my research, watched as you became the soldier we needed you to be. Like the others you were strong, and swift and brave, a natural leader. But you had something they didn’t, something no one saw but me. Can you guess?..Luck.”

-Sgt. Johnson- “Radio for VTOL, heavy lift gear. We’re not leaving him here.”
-Chief- “Yeah, Your Not.”
-Sgt. Johnson- “Crazy fool! Why do you always jump? Someday your gonna land on something as stubborn as you, and I dont do bits and pieces.”

-Chief- “I’m getting you out of here!”
-Sgt. Johnson- “NO…no your not…dont…dont let her go…Dont EVER let her go…(uurghh!)…send me out…with a bang!”
-Cortana- “Chief…I’m so sorry.” (last time the three are seen together)
-Arbiter- “I am sorry Spartan, but come.”

-Cortana- “Dont make a girl a promise, if you know you cant keep it.”

-Arbiter- “Were it so easy” (beginning and ending of Halo3)

and last my favorite Master Chief quote and known through out the Halo world
-Master Chief- “Wake me, when you need me.”

These three characters made the game interesting. I wasn’t to thrilled with carter or Kat to much! But they were good spartans! I gotta say Jorge over all had the best connection no matter who he was with. Emile was a beast so he seemed to enjoy going solo i think. Jun used his humor to keep the site of battle fresh. Seems like they were awesome!

Noble could be any one: i guess i like being the HERO!

Master Chief: is a character of himself! I know why Steve Downs said anybody can be him! It doesn’t seem to fit for anybody to be John. Interview of Steve Downs. I can watch this thing like a million times and still love this interview!

Second part:Understand the hero

I read the entire thread before posting. And yes, you’re right, I do have a great argument. In your post, you stated what YOU thought made Noble Team interesting. Now as you have acknowledged, most people don’t find Noble team to be interesting.

Can we not conclude that most people don’t find what you thought about Noble team to be true?

Noble Team has no personality. You don’t have to write a huge thread when people already know why.

It’s blatantly obvious why people didn’t like the campaign and having crap characters added to the awfulness of the game.

I found Noble team and their Ai Auntie Dot to be a breath of fresh air. Each of them got more characterization than Chref ever did. I’ve always found Chief to be a dull character for years now, most of what he has to say seems to amount to ‘I’m going to go over here and shoot this’ He’s just not a compelling character when you compare him to others. Even the Rookie, Who likely had his voicebox torn out in a crash was more interesting to me from mannerism’s alone.

I’d take Noble team and their attitudes over Cheif(needs to retire) Johnson(Alive past the ring solely fro a retcon) and Cortana.

One thing i would like to say about the Death of Noble 6. The way he died wasn’t meant to be more ‘epic’ than what Chief has done. It was a heroic death, a Spartan death; Fighting to the last breath. Which in my opinion, is the way a Spartan should go out. I was dissapointed by the way Kat died, just for the fact that when Compared to Emile, Carter, and Jorge it feels underwhelming.

Props to Crazyfoomandude for taking the time to peel back the layers and giving us a glimpse at your thoughts on the characters.

This is war, and it’s a -Yoink-.

Any ways.
Noble team was pathetic, had no character development and their deaths where cliché.

Noble Six and Carter have as much personality as my toaster. At least they gave Kat SOME personality, her bad driving is almost a trademark.

> Shame they weren’t given time to develop.

Somewhere, a nail just got a headache. :3

This, right here, was the problem. The characters weren’t bland, but their portrayal was. Subtlety only works when we’re given enough time to see past it.

I personally really liked Noble team, and felt something each time one of its members died.

> I personally really liked Noble team, and felt something each time one of its members died.

laughter and/or joy?

> Carter is a terrible commander, the stupid idiot killed himself taking out one Scarab! Chief takes out Scarabs like taking out Ghosts no problem. Carter should feel guilty if he blames himself for Noble 6’s death, he’s a pathetic commander.

John is a Spartan 2, and better equiped and trained then Carter was. Carter was critically injured and more than likely, was going to die either way. He did what he thought was right in order to complete the objective and save his team. If someone died because of your command, wouldn’t you feel guilty and regret for that decision? Or are you not human?

> Kat is freaking annoying and every time I played the campaign I threw her off every cliff I saw. The moment she got shot I literately LMAO! FINALLY the dumb B**** is dead, good riddance.

Wh…? This is just you slamming a character.

> Emile feels like he’s above humans, why does he feel superior when the “FACT” is that he is inferior to actual SPARTANS! How is he inferior to a Spartan when he is one? The “fact” is that he is a Spartan 3. SPARTAN, 3. You are right, he is worse than a Spartan 2, but he is much better than a normal human. Which in a way, gives him a right to brag. Once again, you’re just slamming a character because of an opinion.

> Jun and Lol-Reach have a lot in common, both are Lame and BORING! Jun never shuts the hell up and every time I play campaign I look for the nearest cliff to throw him off. He’s like that “Clear Eye” guy in the commercials Ben Stein.

Pure opinion and not even a good one at that.

Considering his past, I think he’s earned the title of Hyper Lethal. Considering this was also basically the first time he’s fought the Covenant, I think he did pretty good for what he did, and how long he lasted. A single man fighting against a whole battalion? I wonder how you would fair.

Here’s MY opinion. I could never really feel that close to John becase he never talked, he never really showed emotion. When he did, it was a sarcastic remark, or some sort of come-back. A nod here and a hand-shake there, nothing huge. The same with most Spartans, they don’t show a lot of emotion. They’re hard characters to relate to, and you have to look deep within their selves to see any emotion at all. Even in a character driven series like Mass Effect, it’s hard to relate to the male Shepard and some characters. You have to really look for those emotions at times to know what they’re feeling.

To sum up my above statements, to which they are in no way a slam against you, you really need to look at things statistically, and logically. Not just your opinion.

> Noble Team has no personality. You don’t have to write a huge thread when people already know why.
>
> It’s blatantly obvious why people didn’t like the campaign and having crap characters added to the awfulness of the game.

This and i played the living crap out of Reach’s Campaign. Sorry OP, your wall of text cannot change what Reach is. Reach wasn’t a human story like Bungie hyped it up to be and while it’s not horrible (i did like a few things about it), it’s not anything memorable either. The story isn’t character driven nor does contain ounce of character development because honestly, there wasn’t much to the characters as we didn’t spend any time with them in the game or prior to Reach.

Seriously, if Bungie wanted to tell a deep, human story for Reach, then they should have not used Spartans because many of them are socially inept and are not known for being angry, regretful or even sad (in the games of course). It works in the books sure since you can know the characters thoughts but most Spartans display a cold exterior.

Sure i was shocked when members of Noble died but the more i played, the more i realized the game didn’t give me a reason to care about their deaths (regardless if they went out like heroes). I am pretty sure others feel the same way too.

Being attached Master Chief is a bit hard as he too doesn’t have much character development either. However, read the books and you’ll see there is much more to the guy than jumping into space with spiked bombs and using that spiked bomb to decimate a Covie Carrier. Noble Team doesn’t get that pleasure and so in Reach, we are introduced to characters that at best throw aways.
