Now, most people don’t like NOBLE at all, because they were ‘stale’ and ‘boring’ and stuff like that. But you can’t judge them so easily! They all have personalities that are unique and, in my opinion, interesting. For example…
Carter. He is rather unemotional, but if you look back further into his story, you find out that he blamed himself for the death of the previous NOBLE SIX. As so, he is strict and reclusive when it comes to personality, seeing as he (And SIX) are the only Spartan’s not to show any humor. He does not allow emotional ties in case he loses somebody close. He also focuses purely on the objective, to protect the lives of those under the command. This is nodded at by the line said by Halsey: “Your primary objective? Commander, are you a puppet or a Spartan?” So, there’s the explanation for Carter’s ‘stale-ness’
Kat. Kat is normally very focused like Carter, for she too blames herself for the death of NOBLE SIX. However, she manages to seclude this into her conscious and return to normal life (well, as normal as can possibly be for a Spartan). She is not totally closed-off, as can be seen in the opening cutscene in ‘Long Night Of Solace’ where she plays with Carter, easing him into her inane plan. She is also slightly cheeky and playful with him, making him inform Holland instead of herself. Kat also displays curiosity in most unusual things, which could sort of be put as a ‘hobby’ or interest. does a stale character have a hobby, interest and unique behaviour? Most times, no.
Emile. Emile is an interesting character and has his own vendetta against the Covenant. He believes that ‘you should enjoy doing what you do’, so he, in a way, enjoys killing his enemies, and even carved his helmet as a last act of spite against his foes; to intimidate and humiliate them. He shows signs of dry humour, and believes that Spartans and people are not the same, excluding himself from most people, hence the reason why he neve removes his helmet. For example, he mocks jorge as he tries to talk to the girl at Visegrad Relay, then saying “Big man forgets what he is sometimes.” His attitude is mainly one for mocking, as if he enjoys causing aggression and unease. For example, again at Visegrad, Jorge, says “She needs a full psychiatric work up” and Emile Replies “She’s not the only one…” To agitate Jorge.
Jorge. Jorge is by far the most outright with his emotions. His pulse ‘elevates’ when Halsey’s location is glassed by Covenant. He truly respects her and the others in NOBLE. For example, when NOBLE team walk away from Halsey, Jorge remains until dismissed by Halsey. Also, his last words, possibly the best lines in Reach (IMO). “Listen, Reach has been good to me. Time to return the favor. Tell 'em to make it count.” This shows his powerful emotional ties with his homeworld, Reach.
Jun. Jun is a sarcastic joker who shows deep respect for the Covenant, as he says “I kill the enemy, I do not hate them…” He also appears to be a good friend of Jorge’s, which is shown in the opening cutscene in ‘Long Night Of Solace’, where he rubs smoldering fire from Jorge’s shoulder, then removes his helmet to talk to him (Apparently a sign of respect) and Jorge does the same. He then jokes with Jorge about the friendship between Kat and Carter. Jun is sociable and communicates constantly, more then protocol allows.
So, to conclude, NOBLE team are, in fact, a group of unique and interesting PEOPLE, not just voices in metal suits. They have their own traits and personalities, and IMO make for very entertaining characters.
NOBLE team were some of the best characters Bungie ever made, except the ODST’s. Seriously, I hte people bumming out Chief because he’s all badass. I don’t care if he’s just a green metal gung-ho hillbilly, he’s got the personality of a kettle. FYI, kettles are generally uninteresting beings.
Reach had a subtle story beneath the lines, sorry it didn’t stick out like it did in Halo CE-3. If only people could understand sophistication in a story, and not a simple boys jutting out like a Neanderthals jaw story.
