No Visible CSR will be the death of Halo 4

Does it matter what anyone thinks?

I’m relatively certain that it’s impossible to make any modifications to the hard-coded GUI (which would obviously be required to show a brand new type of element such as a CSR)

Would I have preferred it to have been there in the first place/Have in in Halo 5?

Yes, but only if it decreases during periods of inactivity and is accompanied by separate ranked/social playlists

For those of you who have issues with the idea of it decreasing… I explained my reasoning in another thread. here are some quotes…

> Furthermore CSR simply works better when its viewable in game because the constant visual reminder of it is what inspires people to win. Does this promote boosting, icmp flooding, de-ranking and the like? yes, but only by a small percentage of the population and hopefully they all receive enough complaints filed against them to have their XBL accounts completely disabled.
> Plus there is a simple solution to stopping a lot of that negative activity in the first place. CSR should decrease in periods of inactivity. I can not stress this enough.
> In Halo 3 you could quickly cheat your way to a 50 and that was that, your highest skill was forever cemented in place on your service record. By forcing players to constantly play to keep their 50’s you decrease the chances of people trying to sell accounts, you encourage players to keep on playing and as for people who cheat for their rank, well you force them to keep cheating and therefore greatly increase their chances of getting caught.
>
> Edit: The main reason why I stress that the CSR should decrease in periods of inactivity is because I want the VIGR to return but without the cheating it creates. Bungie removed it after Halo 3 due to the negative behavior that it created (343 didn’t/wont implement it in Halo 4 for the same reason). If its ever going to return then a compromise is required. Something must be done to lessen the negative impact of the behavior that accompanies it or we’ll never see it again. Give and Take my friends.

> Periods of inactivity should reduce your ‘mu’ (actual skill representation) and therefore lower your rank as it is seen by everyone else on your service record. However it should at the same time increase your ‘sigma’ (uncertainty factor) which means it will be easier and faster to re-gain your rank when you start playing again but only if you actually win. If you were to loose then unfortunately it would decrease just as easily/quickly because that’s how the TrueSkill system is designed to work.

quotes from this thread > AN ANALYSIS OF QUITTING AND HOW TO PREVENT IT

Come on man it’s not a big deal. The reason H2 and H3 had better populations was because there was no competition back then. Now there’s other games (I won’t name them but you know them) that are taking some of Halo’s spotlight. Anybody who’s playing H4 now is likely to stay. I can’t imagine someone dropping a game because they have to get on their computer to see a number.

i don’t think halo 4 is a dead game. i think there’s like 70000 players everyday, but comparing to halo 2, or halo 3 then yeah. i think i remember halo 3 having like 250000 players online most of the time. compare this to another halo game besides reach and some people can think this is a halo game in bad shape.

Besides Deluxe game types, that Team Throwdown playlist is keeping me playing. before that playlist came out i stopped playing halo for about a month. I am no programmer but i think halo ranks should be shown in game, and i think that if it was it wouldn’t do nothing but HELP halo 4. I dont know how hard it would for 343 to add it in. but i think it SHOULD be in game and it was a mistake for them not to.

IMO i think halo 4 should

-Get rid of this Flinch Garbage
-Bring back De-Scope
-Slightly nerf DMR’s ROF
-Have on map weapon and power up pick ups
-All players start out with the same Loadout
-Have more symmetrical small/medium sized maps
-Have an in game Rank for each playlist

and for the ones that wont happen, but ill post them but they are just MY opinions

-Remove AA’s
-Remove Ordinance
-Remove Loadouts

I don’t min how ordinance is applied in the team throwdown playlist. but i think it should just be removed from it all together.

I’d say the lack of a local only search filter will kill Halo before some rank system.

I really doubt with no CSR will be the death of halo. Many have already talk about this is the pass posts (with all the problems etc not just the CSR). There is still a decent amount a players that still play halo 4 even without visible in-game CSR. So no halo 4’s death will come anytime soon.

you can’t put a number next to toughness

> It should be an option you should be able to hide your rank if you like or short if you like that way every type of player can be happy

That’s the best option. Casual player who doesn’t care? Turn it off and forget about it. Competitive player who lives and dies by a number? Leave it on. Or turn it to hide your hand. Everyone wins.

Just make it an option on your Spartan ID card; it’d be perfect.

> If CSR is not visible in-game, then Halo 4… and the halo series will die. Just look at the game’s population three months into launch. Its almost dead… and with 343 planning on not making CSR visible in game, seriously 343 don’t even bother working on CSR. Having no visible CSR defeats the purpose of even having a ranking system. Why do you think Halo 2 and Halo 3’s populations were MUCH higher than reach and halo 4? It’s not rocket science… its so simple just give us what we want. Halo 2’s matchmaking was actually addicting because when you de-ranked you wanted to go back and play more matches to get your rank back up. Having it visible adds to the pride and motivation of working hard to achieve a high rank. 343… you guys were Dead Wrong for many things… don’t ruin your last chance to save the series. Bring back competitive halo!

Last I remember, the point of a Ranking system was to have you meet up with players of equal skill so that you are not always encountering n00bs. Not to say “I have a higher rank that you! I’m a much better player.”. Visible rank is only for boasting and showing off, not for pride and not for motivation.

It’s already dead population wise.

I think the next retail release will suffer a big blow after 4 and Reach.

You are not better than anyone else on Earth, don’t act like so.

I’m guessing you are British.

FACT: Being from the colonies makes your opinion on my British superiority invalid.

> No… it won’t.
> To be perfectly honest anyone who cares about their CSR rank will likely know of it’s existence here on the site and will probably have the means to access it easily (smartphone/laptop).
> It really does not need to be visible in game, at all. (Not saying it would hurt if it were)

i agree with this and would also like to add, we dont have a visable CSR now, so surely the idea of it not being visable when its added, changes nothing at all? people who arnt informed of it wont even know about it and honestly it isnt important, how can something which already isnt in the game, kill it months later by still not being in it?

your point makes no sence OP

blah blah blah blah blah.

LOL,

I thought that the DMR was the death of Halo?

I thought that the gauss cannon on Exile was the death of Halo?

I thought that humanizing the Chief was the death of Halo?

But I see that it is CSR that is going to be the death of Halo!!!

All that CSR is going to revel how mediocre the vast majority of us are.

It will not force us to try harder?!

As if a magical number will make me shoot true.

CSR is an E--Yoink!-.

I would prefer that everyone keep their e-junk hidden.

I’m cool with having a VIGR system, just as long as we have a social ranking system as well. The ranking systems should also only be affect by Ranked/competitive gametypes and affect it’s matchmaking system.

But it wouldn’t be the death of Halo, not by a long shot.

Halo 3 had a high pop cause it was one of the most know a very few competitive multiplayers available for it’s time on console

Now with nearly every game that comes out that has multiplayer everyone has spread out across titles like Battlefield Crysis L4D Gears of War

COD last 3 titles have very large population

Halo 4 is lucky to peak 60k on average for play pop

I would love to see a CSR  Show my skill 50’s in any gametype… But if not, it will not be the death of Halo 4 :stuck_out_tongue: Not at all

Once again the majority is being beaten by the minority. Bioware is doing the same thing.

The poll is too binary. I’d like it to be visible in-game, but you’re playing it up like having it invisible in-game and visible on Waypoint is some gigantic issue. I don’t care enough to complain about it, I’m just happy that they’ve given us a skill rank at all.

No, it won’t. Don’t overreact.
