My guess is that they’ll have a “ranking” system like Reach’s and then a seperate 1-50-like system that doesn’t affect anything but your number (Kind of like how Halo Reach’s “Arena” mode was seperate to the ranking system). That way everyone can unlock the weapons they want.

It is a misnomer that Reach does not have a true ranking system. In fact, it’s virtually the same ranking system as Halo 3. True Skill is still operating in the background to rank players and setup matches based on that skill level. Just because you can’t see your True Skill rank does not mean that you were removed from “ranked” matches.
> Of course. Why wouldn’t they? No problem with any sort of account boosting or selling. That’s all that matters when it comes to ranking system.
No. “Rank” implies some sort of visual cue that you have reached a certain position on a table of, say, numbers, based on the skill you’ve shown. Rank should not rely on time-played or whether or not boosting occurs.
Also, I’d like to know which game you’ve been playing for the past 2 years? Halo Reach has plenty of boosting. In fact, it’s easier to do than in Halo 3 since you get cR for simply standing still in-game instead of actually having to win.

Reach’s trueskill was awful and did not work. I’ve played tons of games against kids that should be in hospitals repairing their seemingly broken thumbs, and I’ve also gotten whooped 50-15 against teams of players much better than me. It tried to do what you say, but it didn’t. Simple as that.

Lets hope we have a 1-50 system somwhere in Halo 4.

Just like in Halo 2 and Halo 3, Reach’s True Skill in matchmaking operates to match players within +/- 10 levels. Factor in some Lag, and occasionally games can go very poorly or great depending on which side of things you are on. The same occurrence happens in Halo 2&3, some games would go very well and some would go poorly.
If you want True Skill rank displayed… all power too you, its a perfectly legitimate desire. But saying Reach does not have a true Ranking system is simply false.
I really hope there is a 1-50 somewhere in Halo 4 also. It’s not that we need it, it’s just something that we want.
For me personally I feel a sense of accomplishment after setting a goal to get a 50 in a certain playlist and finally accomplishing it. I feel way better accomplishing that goal then dedicating my life to reach to get an inheritor.
I feel in every game people are going to find ways to boost and cheat. Look at the ONI: Sword Base cheat in reach. You do it everyday for 100 days and you’re an inheritor. Imagine how long it takes to get an inheritor legit. I think it’s ridiculous and takes to much time. I personally don’t have the time to get an inheritor legit with my life and the way it is and I don’t think its fair that we should have to dedicate so much time to reap all the benefits of a game.
I mean in COD you have the option to prestige and start over, but if you want you can stay the level you are and have every benefit of the game just by playing it a decent amount of time. In reach to get the exclusive haunted helmet you need to be an inheritor. I know armor isn’t that big of a deal but some people like to unlock everything, especially in a game they enjoy.
All in all reach failed with the arena and their overall ranking system. I really hope 1-50 returns.

Then how’s this?
I would rather have a ranking system that visually shows my skill and matches me against others who are +/- 3 compared to me than to have a ranking system that hides that number and seemingly randomly places me in games.
Reach’s trueskill system was terrible. I never said it didn’t have a ranking system. I said it didn’t work. The number of games that I’ve played terrible players is much higher than it ever was in Halo 3, be it Ranked or Social.
Saying Reach had a legitimate ranking system that worked if false. Factor in the fact that “ranks” in Arena reset every couple of months and you have complete randomness.

When you enter Arena, yes, but in all other game modes, it is, in essence, social. even social made attempts to balance skills, but much more loosely. You can’t tell me that all 8 people in a Halo Reach match are of similar or equal skill.
> My guess is that they’ll have a “ranking” system like Reach’s and then a seperate 1-50-like system that doesn’t affect anything but your number (Kind of like how Halo Reach’s “Arena” mode was seperate to the ranking system). That way everyone can unlock the weapons they want.
This makes the most sense. A visible skill-based rank should only appear where it matters, which in this case would be the Red vs. Blue Infinity multiplayer matches that are supposed to be all about competition (like The Arena). Your “skill rank” will have little or no meaning in Spartan Ops games, but just to keep people happy it’ll probably be displayed in the lobby so you can quit out if the other players don’t meet your standards. Probably why they put in the “join in progress” thing. Heck, maybe they’ll have a deal where you set up a game and you can restrict matchmaking to your “rank” and above, to keep out the riff raff.
Or maybe they will just stop trying to figure out a 1-50 system that will work without problems and just let everyone that doesn’t like that find another game.
> I would rather have a ranking system that visually shows my skill and matches me against others who are +/- 3 compared to me than to have a ranking system that hides that number and seemingly randomly places me in games.
You may experience some longer wait times… but it would be nice to have some more control over how matchmaking sets up our matches. Personally, I would wait for games with a +/- 3 levels w/ a good connection.
> Reach’s trueskill system was terrible. I never said it didn’t have a ranking system. I said it didn’t work. The number of games that I’ve played terrible players is much higher than it ever was in Halo 3, be it Ranked or Social.
That is a subjective opinion, and I think that perhaps the mathematicians behind True Skill might beg to differ. Considering you have 2434 competitive games played w/ a 1.83 k/d there is a basic possibility you are simply sitting on the higher end of True Skill. Is it that True Skill is broken in Reach, or is it simply that the player base at your True Skill level is a smaller pool of players? Matchmaking & True Skill works better with a large diverse player base… but as the player base decreases, there is only so much Matchmaking can do to setup a lag free competitive games.
> Saying Reach had a legitimate ranking system that worked if false. Factor in the fact that “ranks” in Arena reset every couple of months and you have complete randomness.
Your understanding of Arena “ranks” is flawed. Arena did not match games on the Arena “rank”, it matched games on the True Skill rank operating in the background… and True Skill did not reset. The idea behind Arena was simply to give players inventive to keep competing each “season”… which arguably backfired.

Thank you for commenting with a civil tone and actually providing a backbone to your argument.
Pretty much exactly what I was trying to say. With Arena, the wait-times are so long, but only because nobody plays it. In Halo 3, I could find a match with a 25-28 spread for all 8 players in less than 3 minutes.
While you may be right in saying that I’m better than others and the game doesn’t have an option to find good opponents, I still happen to find full teams or random players that are much better than me. About 99% of the time, these are not on my team, which only further frustrates me.
You may be right. I never played enough Arena to actually care. From my understanding, once you were placed in a division, you played against others in that same division and close to your percentile. Obviously the percentile comes from your trueskill in some sense.
Either way, the point I was trying to make was that visual cues seem to work much better simply because I know that I’m finding matches that are near my skill level rather than hoping I do, but realizing that everyone is better or worse than me.
