Seriously 343, you’re just nailing the coffin shut now for us (actual) competitive players, aren’t you?
I just don’t understand how the “too much bandwidth” excuse can be made here. Every other successful competitive title ( SC2, LoL, Gears to name a few) includes some sort of spectator mode so that online tournaments can be streamed with sponsorships etc.
I don’t quite know how to put my disappointment into words right now…
Along with the bandwidth issue, there is also the issue with time, they wouldn’t have even planned out how they would do this, let alone begin development on it, it was suggested way to late.
Feel free to ask for Halo 5, but in Halo 4, not enough time into the development stage.

It’s not necessary, but boy does it help. Just look how big Starcraft 2 is. An online SC2 tournament streamed on Twitch.tv can get 10k+ concurrent viewers, thanks to it’s spectator mode. That is impossible in Halo, which is why people need to invest hundreds in equipment if they want to simply stream their own POV to an audience of no more than 50 people.
Though is it too late to ask for it post launch as DLC? I recall Gears 3 doing this with one it’s TUs and added a Spectator mode. It didn’t have it in the game at launch.
I think most are asking for a LAN based spectator mode, not one for online. I got that vibe that the person who asked it meant it for online rather than LAN (which most competitive players at the MLG level would LOVE to have).
It’s something that won’t make or break the game, i get this. However…
With the amount of money this game is going to sell and the post DLC support, i don’t think adding it in later is out of the question just yet.

It has been suggested for years, and it is not some “new feature” that is just taking hold. Not to mention the fact that bandwidth has nothing to do with it. having 2 spectators would do no more to the bandwidth than upping a 4v4 game to a 5v5, not to mention Quake 3 had a spectator mode when the most common internet connection was 56k.

Halo has managed since Halo 2 with the current settings, that isn’t the reason it has lower viewers than Starcraft, Reach wasn’t making the money MLG wanted so they dropped it from the circuit.
It is completely possible for Halo to pull as many viewers as Starcraft if MLG want to try and pull more risks for Halo 4.

Except Starcraft don’t just have MLG. They have massive online tournaments that work purely because they can stream them through a spectator mode. Not to mention that with a spectator mode MLG would only need to spend money setting up one stream, rather than having to spend money on the equipment for eight different streams.
Spectator mode saves money, as the cost for equipment to stream goes up…a spectator mode makes it easier to do. Instead of individual streaming multiple screens, you would only have to do it for one screen in a spectator mode. It’s cost effective, and the reason why Halo:Reach was dropped for the first place is that they had to pay for more for streaming, then for StarCraft 2 and SC2 made more money. It didn’t make sense. Places like MLG and IPL can afford the bandwidth costs, obviously. 343i, if you wanted to listen to your competitive community, you would not been in this mess. This is one of the key flaws. If we don’t get it with this title, it’ll definitely hurt…
It’s plane ridiculous, actually. You still have months to correct this. I suggest, I mean I strongly advise, you take a look back or talk with MLG before you consider not doing this. If you want to appeal to the MLG players, and they are still hopeful even with all the CoD-stuff there (I know, the sales of CoD are just too good to pass up adding CoD perks), but cmon. Give our community a break. We don’t even have a circuit now for flip sake.
puts off other gaming leagues, such as IPL, it costs too much to set up a live production
Literally kills online competition
Helps youtube/machinima makers
Helps the local LANS have quality stream productions through all 8 POV’s
“Halo has managed since Halo 2 with the current settings”
It cost them a fortune to get any kind of production. Frankly, any game that doesnt have a spectator mode should not be considered competitive, it is a basic standard from esports these days.
Gears had one, even patched in after release, so dont give me that “ask for it for Halo 5” crap. Bandwidth? Christ, Counterstrike 1.6 had a spectator mode.

Starcraft competitively is on a completlty different level to Halo, thats laughable to think that, even more so with no spectator mode. Pull risks? I presume that means using default. Cod does fine at a competitive level and they strip the game even more than Halo, they dont even use killstreaks, something they are famous for, and Halo wants to put in. “Risks” will not help Halo 4, whatever that means
I’m going to become more competative in Halo 4, jumping from my casual side in Reach. So a spectator mode would be nice, and I’d actually start following events then.
Got used to it in Dota 2 as well.
I’m not however that bummed out by the lack of it, even though it’d be a nice addition.
Also, doesn’t most game featuring spectator mode have some server hosts? I wouldn’t want to have 100 spectators on my match in BTB. The lag would be… huge.
