No shield recharge when running?

Have I not remembered correctly or is this new? It seems that, even when out of combat, shield recharge rate is ridiculously slow and even non existent when sprinting.

You’re correct. Shields don’t recharge when sprinting in Halo 5, and it’s a new feature. It was first announced in the Behind the Scenes vidoc for the beta that showed at last year’s Halofest event, which was also the first look the public got at the multiplayer.

To quote the vidoc:

> Josh Holmes (Studio Head of Internal Development): We know there are people that love sprint, and there are people that just feel like sprint has no place in Halo; and so for us the question was: how do we balance that? How do we counter that?

> Tim Longo (Creative Director): We’ve connected it to your shields, so while you’re sprinting your shields don’t recharge.

Thank god that they don’t. Sprint would be very annoying otherwise

Yep, sprint is meant to be used for travel over escape - the latter being a big complaint in Halo 4.

I have no issue with this but, at the same time, it certainly needs faster recharge then when not sprinting and out of combat because with 8 people in an arena (a small arena at that), no chance to run off and recharge after a one on one, and the slow rate of recharge your character is basically trading 1 for 1 every single damn time. It just becomes a situation where you kill a person and wait for someone to peg you from a distance because you can’t run off to reset your shields.

Now if they brought the number down to 6 in arena that may be better but, as it stands, they really need to look into the out of combat recharge rate if they are not allowing recharge while sprinting (which, again, I have no issue with).

Sprint in reach was vey unbalanced which cheated players in their kills. This mechanic balances out for players that try to escape are at a disadvantage. Halo was never know for backing down. You challenge and finish your opponent which tasks skill and patience.

I like how creative you’ve got to be with the shield now. Use cover to break line of sight and let shields recharge or trust in your ability to get the drop on someone else.

It’s kinda stupid because of the fast paced game play of halo, also unfair.

good balance but damn do i forget to stop sprinting and get killed

I think its perfect, learn to take better engagements and positions…

The new mechanic just requires adaptation, just try to alter your play style because running in, firing a few shots then sprinting away will not work as effectively.

Oh shut up with your “get better” baloney. It’s a valid statement and a valid discussion and has absolutely not a single thing to do with your passive aggressive attempt to bring attention to yourself as some pro. Not everyone has the wondrous existence to be able to spend 16 hours in a video game mode learning the ins and outs and you acting like I am doing some disservice by asking a reasonable and logical question is both hilarious and pathetic as you shift the narrative to yourself like you are some hero for being fantastic at a video game mode. People are allowed to ask questions to learn what is going on and (in some cases) attempt to learn current strategy to better their gameplay and all your “get better” rhetoric does is not a single thing of value outside of attempting to make yourself feel important… about a video game…

Regardless and back on topic. What have you guys been doing to counter this in FFA when you have to constantly contend with people shooting you from afar after engagement? Are you just killing and reverting right back to your rhythm or are you attempting to find cover afterwards?

I haven’t noticed a difference with shield recharge when in cover, but I like the not charging while sprinting. I like having to try and find different sight lines for a better perspective so I get a better chance of surving.

It’s been a mechanism since beta. It’s actually pretty balanced. People cant use sprint as a crutch and run away while recharging shield. Just be happy that the hardcore players didn’t get their way and have no sprint at all.

I started playing tonight and never sprinting at all. Just getting used to the old school mechanic again. I see what you guys mean now. It’s actually more strategic although I still think that with the current recharge rate 8 people in such small maps may be too many.
