This is probably the final nail in the coffin for me. With no progression/unlock system separate from the battlepass I can’t see myself playing Halo Infinite for more than a few matches if it means there’s nothing to actually work towards.
Battle passes just don’t do it for me. I hate the battle pass style unlock in the MCC and I’m most likely gonna hate it here too…
I dont see a difference. Progression systems and battlepasses are the exact same thing. There is very little difference between leveling 1-100 in a bp and recruit to inheritor. Both systems will not give something each rank (one will but its paid for). Both systems are grindy in some form (reaches ranking system as well as 5s was terrible).
Also, the BP system in MCC isnt XP based, its point based and you have a maximum amount of points possible. Infinites, while technically having a cap, doesnt really have a feasable cap to bp progression for people that play less than 16 hrs a day.
I guess I am just getting old, but if you wont play infinite purely cause it lacks a ranking system that fits your image of it, I dont think you really want to play halo in general

This isn’t the MCC system.
Challneges give XP towards your BattlePass and you have daily challenges for “complete 1
match” that loop on and on. That’s the same as post
match xp - which is progression towards your battlepass.
The only thing missing is a completely arbitrary number next to your name.
There’s a lot more to a game than just having the unlock things and work towards this and that. There’s also a element of fun from just playing too.
343i have aid they’re looking into bringing back traditional player levels too since players want them - it’s likely not gone forever.
It really is staggering these days how many people are obsessed with levelling systems in MP games. Here’s a thought, how about simply playing the game for fun, because it’s fun…what do you think of that? Did i just blow your mind or what?

They want that arbitrary number next to their name that shows how much time they’ve dedicated. I understand the premise but it is an odd hill to die on. It doesn’t indicate your skill in anyway, just time dedicated. I guess they want a big number and cool emblems to show how many times they’ve prestiged. I wouldn’t care if they added this now or later on. It isn’t a deal breaker or an enhancer to me. Lol
It’s far from the end of the world to me, but I do find it odd that they wouldn’t bring back any sort of progression outside the battle pass. Especially considering we used to have a military rank progression system and they’re making a big deal out of your mp Spartan feeling like part of the larger universe.

Fun is subjective. I could find going into forge and dropping tanks on my friends for hours “Fun” but that does not mean others will get the same enjoyment. It is disappointing that the battlepass system had to be a replacement rather than just a separate system to the free unlocks they have already stated they have. So why get rid of the progression?

Here’s a thought, a large part of the fun for some people is unlocking the cooler things in the game. Did I just blow your mind or what? Stop being condescending and assuming that everyone is exactly like you and should think & play exactly like you. A large part of a game’s gratification for me is unlocking cool things, and when that’s rendered extremely annoying and tedious, the fun is dampened. News flash, people experience games differently. Shocking, right? What do you think of that?

You’ve made a huge assumption that unlocking things is going to be annoying and tedious though. We don’t know how much XP it will take to level up, but I imagine the daily challenges will give you a steady stream of progression at a not dissimilar rate to normal, per match XP, and between the challenge swaps you unlock for free and the multiple weekly challenge slots I’m sure you’ll be able to unlock a fair chunk of them each week not altering your platsyle at all. And let’s not pretend Reach’s system wasn’t a slog to grind out, you needed about 10,000,000 credits to max out that games armoury. That’s what I would call annoying and tedious.

So much mental gymnastics only to defend treating video games like a chore. Newsflash: video games are still video games without progression systems. The reason people actually play games in the first place is because of raw gameplay itself - the thing which fundamentally distinguishes video games from other media. Stuff like progression systems and cosmetic unlocks are not essential whatsoever, and if you depend on those things to keep playing because the core game isn’t enough of a reason in itself for you, then maybe you should reevaluate how you spend your time a bit. It’s not a job. I mean, people are actually acting like 343 have ruined the game by not having some levelling system at launch, that’s how ridiculous this mentality has got. Sad.
If you are looking for arbitrary numbers to hit that mean nothing, then you can track how many hours you play the game and give yourself a high five for hitting whatever milestones you feel are appropriate.
Personally I don’t have an issue. What could be cool is if there is a universal rank or even just a detailed stats page that you can compare with friends, like the early waypoint app during Reach. Commendations could be cool to bring back, or random multiplayer accomplishments. I’m just hoping the ranked system works well.
343 have had a shaky time with Halo but if they nail the general experience it would be odd to stop playing over a progression system, but different strokes for different folks.
To me the pinnacle of progression / armour integration are the vidmaster achievements. If there’s ever a challenge requirement not just a progression i’d love that. Doing Deja vu, Annual and Endure are still highlights of co-op gaming in general for me.

If there was an after match xp progression system.
No one would buy the spartan tokens required to keep leveling up their Battle pass, after they complete the daily/weekly challenges.
And 343i wouldn’t make any money back on the game.
Not saying I agree with this at all, just showing you why they’re going with this format.
Free to play was always a red flag, this just illustrates why.
Its why all the cool looking armor will be at the end of the pass, and when you see a player running around wearing it on day 1, you know why.
They paid for it. And will continue to pay for it each season.
I would really like a progression system, the game can be great and exciting, but ranking and levelling up and earning things keeps the satisfaction imo
In all honesty I won’t miss having a rank/level purely based on time spent that much. The only advantage it had in previous games was to identify smurfs for me.
I think it’s a bold statement to make stating that there is no progression besides the BP. You will always be able to progress towards the gamescore achievements and it’s already stated that there will also be collectibles etc. in the campaign so plenty of carrots to chase in my opinion.
Hopefully this will stimulate more Spartans to actually play ranked to feel that sense of achievement and improvement. Trying to improve yourself and getting higher ranks in those playlists is more rewarding then getting an emblem just because you’ve spent a lot of time isn’t it?
