Halo Infinite releasing without any type of progression system outside of the battle pass is a massive let down. A progression system is needed in the game, I can’t believe they chose not to include one. Grinding for those high ranks is half of the fun of Halo. I really hope this is something they add soon, something similar to Reach ranks, H3 ranks, or something new. What do you guys think?
Personally I really loved grinding ranks in Halo Reach, kinda sad that there won’t be a similar feature at launch.
I wouldn’t even want it tied to rewards lol I just want something to show for my time commitment.
I absolutely love it, progression through time played has always felt unsatisfying to me. I know a lot of people do like this though so I understand they will miss it. I don’t enjoy it personally as feels like you get a random number at the end of the game which is a drop in the ocean on the road to the max rank - usually high enough that most players won’t even come close. After the first set of levels, progression becomes painstakingly slow. I’m looking forward to the challenges as based on the examples given they are varied and will encourage me to play a variety of different modes or different ways which will help the game feel less routine or stale over time.
It is also a pretty huge deterrent for AFK players which I’ve noticed is an issue in all the Halo games right now! For that reason alone I would fully support never having another purely time based progression system, although I would absolutely support it if some proper AFK measures were built into it. That way it can appease everyone.
There will also be ranked modes to try and progress through, Bronze to Onyx which will be purely skill based.
I’m actually pretty down about this. Seems like a really strange move - a simple progression system doesn’t seem like a hard thing to do, and since there’s a battle pass there doesn’t need to be anything attached to the levels really, simply a number next to your gamertag. I feel like it should be simple to implement and it would make a lot of people happy.

Agreed, I feel like this is fairly easy to implement. However, I really would prefer cool rank names and symbols rather than SR 1-152, which is really boring honestly.
i dont really care. Based in the inside infinite post there will be continual mini progression systems released throught a season with the bp being the overarching one. Thats fone for me. I dont get infatuated with ranks or numbers
We still will have SOMETHING to display, such as an armor piece/coating/emblem that reflects some amount of dedication…it just won’t be a number.

It the scheme of game development it isn’t that hard, but it’s still not something that can easily be added before launch now.
The system first has to be planned, which is a bigger task than you might think. If they’re truly planning on this being a platform that’s lasts 10 years, how many ranks do they include? Do they stick with Halo 5’s exponential system, which means logically we’d have a 1-154/155 system at most for a 10 year game? Most people probably would have struggled to reach 152 without XP boosts and double XP weekends though. How do they keep leveling fun beyond a year or two of play without just including thousands of levels that increase at a flat rate. They could do that, but are people actually happy with a number? What about bringing back military ranks from Halo 3 and reach? What about when you reach the end? Do they call it XP as well, or will that be confusing with BP progress.
When they’ve decided on all that, they then have to implement the logic into the game, including figuring out how to scale XP gain for different game modes, build out the UI that displays XP post match and add a way to view it in the menus. They need to design the icons for the ranks, and probably design some effects that play when you rank up. Then they have to bug test all the new features and UI elements and make sure it all displays properly all the time.
It’s not outside of the developers capability, but all the different teams that would have to work on these things, the live team, UI/UX team, the sandbox team, QA, they’ve all got their plates full with making sure the game ships in a stable state with what’s already slated for release. They could have planned this earlier, but honestly I think 343 were hoping that Battle pass progress would be the solution to some of the problems I listed above. I don’t see a way you can feasably create a linear progression system that’ll stay interesting for the life span of the game. In Halo 5 and Reach, as you start approaching the end of the system it just becomes a tireless slog to rank up. Either we’ll have an even longer slog because they anticipate the game lasting longer, or tons of people will hit max rank within a couple of years and the system becomes a non entity anyway.
I’m not bothered by it. If I want to see how much of my life I’ve spent playing a game, I can go to the game data and see how many hours I’ve played. Experience rank is just a way to get players to feel like they are accomplishing something (getting a rush of endorphins when you hit that unlock), when it is really meaningless. It is often an attempt to encourage players to keep playing even if they don’t enjoy the gameplay. How many COD players out there grinding the game just to get a higher prestige or whatever it was called?
I’ve come to the conclusion after all the information revealed about Infinite so far, that this game wasn’t designed for me, I’m getting older and I’m not as good as I once was for sure but the lack of progression paths for casual players is unsatisfying to me, investing in a live environment with challenges as the sole factor in ranking up which are designed to make me play different isn’t an enjoyable idea i want to placate.
I hope in the future there is some sort of compromise for people who wish to have a more casual progression path with a “play your way” mindset.
Still, after playing the first technical preview, the game is genuinely fun, I just wish casual play was discussed a lot sooner, perhaps some sort of change/compromise could’ve been had.
It does suck that 343 decided to go with no progression at launch. It definitely takes away from some of the motivation to grind. It felt nice to be the highest rank with all the cool armor on in reach and it felt really good honestly. Since there is no progression at launch it seems that armor might be more limited since ranking up in past Halos was key to obtaining pieces of armor. I hope it is only a week or month max of a delay, I get they have to focus on gameplay but I hope they do no take away a lot of the core elements of Halo that people love.

I’d argue this is the most casual friendly progression it has ever seen. I don’t get to play games often but it looks like I will be able to make good progress in smaller play pockets. Little and often.
In Reach for example, progression was locked behind playing an obscene amount. Even when I had a lot more time to play, I never got close!

A casual progression would imply an ease of access to the next level and/or unlock, when challenges that force you to play outside of how you’d desire are the main factor in that progression you are sacrificing simplicity for forced playstyles which isn’t an enjoyable prospect.
Get kills with [y] isn’t as appealing as just playing the game knowing your time invested will progress you further.
XP sinks aren’t problematic when reasonable, but challenge-based progression forces you to play certain ways without compromise.
Hold on.
Is there a ranking system or ranked gameplay at all??

Yes, to both. We’ve known there will be ranked play for a while, it was confirmed that Ranked play will be restricted by input type in matchmaking, so controller users will only be matched with keyboard users. As for ranking system, nothing official from 343 but we know there is almost certainly going to be one through various means.
